Travelling in different Cabin to Partner - general advice, tips and warnings

Different strokes for different folks.
In my household, I've always offered (and its been accepted) the business class boarding pass and I've sat in the back.

Not from a SWMBO perspective but from a being good bloke point of view.
We tend to spend all of our points on my wife and our young adults (kids) flying in the pointy end.

As JohnK would now, I've lost a few kgs so fit nicely into Y these days.

All of the pointy end of town for the wife allows me freedom in other areas, i.e. golf whenever I want, travel whenever I want, do whatever I want...thank god I don't work much!

Cheers
BF

Because it makes no sense for a ~52kg female to sit in business while a 120kg+ male suffers in economy. Plus she doesn't drink and she won't earn status either.

I asked her again last night. She doesn't mind if we don't sit together for a few hours.

And I don't subscribe to the SWMBO theory. Far from it.

It's all rainbows & unicorns until the 'buffalo gets sick'. :p :p

John, disappointed to see someone is making you feel guilty over your planned trip. The benefit your friend will gain from visiting those locations will be more than compensated for flying in Y. I suspect that she would feel even more uncomfortable if she was flying J alone while you were squashing yourself in a Y seat. But most importantly, you have to make your own call on these matters - have a good trip.
She is actually quite good. She is not demanding and she is grateful to be given the opportunity to travel. Sitting in economy is like business class for her already.

I will let her decide.

Its not a friend. Its his future wife!

Indeed. No doubt if that happens we will all get to discuss it in length here at aff too.

Re: Heads up about program changes

Hell no, I often threaten to put my husband back there but he just as often threatens me with divorce over it.

Ive also told him that if an upgrade op ever came up, we will take it and argue about who gets to sit in the comfy chair later on.

Hey - I never said you were right or wrong to do it - I just said that according to vitagen you're discourteous and dishonourable. :)

If you have nothing pleasant to say about someone - why say anything. Don't you think the comments about "until the buffalo gets sick" a bit off?

I was referring to a what JohnK himself mentioned at a previous social get together so they were actually his own words I was quoting back to him & certainly not meant to cause offence.

With regard to SWMBO's in whY when spouses are in a higher cabin, if it's something that they have no issues with then I don't see why there's a problem.

Fair enough.

But you are a gentleman!

The plan is to take her to HKG DO, SIN DO and KUL/SIN lounge crawl.

My flights are convoluted as I will be coming from Australia and she will be coming from Chiang Mai. The budget is tight. I cannot afford business class for both. I don't want to fly ecomomy. She wouldn't want me to spend that much on her flights or hotels.

Now you got me feeling guilty. Best to dump the planned trips.

Maybe you could book all your seats as planned and on one of the shorter sectors swap BP's with her on boarding and let her sit in your seat.
That would be a real treat that any lady would love.
Just a thought

I have no issue with your comment or vitagen's comment. He has met her and I see where he is coming from but life is not always that simple.

What I find hard to understand is this need to sit together at all times. Or if you can't afford for both to be in premium cabin why both must suffer.

Either way I enjoy this discussion.

Don't feel guilty - you two are the only ones who know what works for you. A little advice from someone who has been happily married for a very long time. Marriage is a real commitment and if you love each other both of you will make sacrifices for each other. It is a two way street sometimes you will do it for her and sometimes the other way around - basically it is a constant set of compromises that you feel out as you go along. No relationship is perfect or idealistic bliss, but as long as you genuinely care for each other you will work it out. I don't think women lie but we definitely say we enjoy things in order to make the other person happy. Mr FM's thing is photography not golf, but I often go with him and claim to enjoy the hours of walking around taking photos of everything that moves and even carry his tripod for him. Sometimes I even enjoy it but mostly I would rather be at home with a book. It is not a lie - just what you do for people you love. I know he does similar things for me - even goes to chic flicks....

All in good time.

First off is lounge crawl in HKG in November.

Re: Heads up about program changes

Hi John, please don't misunderstand me as I meant no offence. obviously each situation is different. If it's short haul and connecting from different locations then fair enough. Not here to make you feel bad. Having met your lovely wife to be probably won't care either way. My fear of swmbo outweighs my fear of my savings or points balance reducing to 0.

I didn't take offence.

I have also met your lovely wife and understand your fear. I am lucky my fiancee puts up with me but she is still taking everything in.

P.S. She put me in charge of planning trips. She trusts me. That could all change but for now she is not too fussy. I need to keep her away from AFFers. ;)

Brilliant!

Well two of us have met her so we must be special. :)

Re: Heads up about program changes

On a recent trip AUH - SYD in J, I got 5K on VA. On the way to AUH but on the way back, there was a lady sitting in the seat next to me.

She asked if it was OK if I swapped seats with her fiancee in row 3. Not wanting to feel awkward & not wanting to sit to someone possibly complaining for 14 hours, I moved.

To me, the couple were effectively in different classes in the cabin even though it was the same class.

Re: Heads up about program changes

Wow! Giving up row 5?

Not me - I would have suggested 5J swap with the PAX adjacent in row 3.
