Hi,

I am trying to decide if I should spend the extra $ in travelling in the PE class of Air NZ to LA. Is this class worth the extra money?

Is there a difference in comfort between the Air NZ 747 and 777-200 PE in Air NZ?

Any advise or tips you could give in PE travel with Air NZ would be great.

Thanking all in advance.

There is no difference in the seat between 777 and 747, however I would try to get 747 (assuming I could get seat upstairs and not the new mini cabin downstairs).

It is a good product, significantly better than economy. However there aren't as big discounts available in premium economy as regular economy and so could be relatively expensive for the extra benefits you get. Still much cheaper than business (especially on US routes).

As for tips - the C seat in front row is the best and worst on the 777. Best in that there is no bulkhead in front so a tonne of legroom. Worst in that you get knocked by every pax who boards after you're seated and the aisle is quite narrow so have to take care not to get knocked by FAs or carts.

If I could affort the difference I would pay for premium economy every time I was forced to fly economy. Only you can decide if you can affort it.

If a OneWorld carrier offered premium econpmy trans-Pacific, I would not hesitate to personally pay the difference between my employer-paid econpmy seat and premium economy.

I have not personally flown the NZ product, but would not hesitate to pay the extra for PE if I was otherwise to be using NZ as my carrier.

Thanks for all your advise.

Could you pls advise if the PE class will be more comfortable than Air NZ Y class?

We want to feel fresh upon arriving into LA so that we avoid the dreadful jetlag feeling.

Thanks.

Of course it is more comfortable than economy. The seat has an extra 1.5 " width (if I recall correctly), several inches more pitch and a bigger legrest (that is useless if you are tall :( ). It is not, however, anything like business class seat.

I have only flown NZ Y (Pacific Economy) and I found that very comfortable, although the 777 had noticably less pitch than what I had on the 747, but I was happy with it:D , but not the lady who is taller than me.:( I thought I read that the PE 777 seats were narrower than what is on the 747 but from what I saw they have a very decent amount of legroom.

I flew NZ Premium Economy from AKL-HNL in August 2005 (just after they introduced the service), and can't recommend it highly enough.

Try for a 747, as the PE seats are upstairs (quiter, and more privacy), behind Business Premier section, giving passengers access to the BP Wine Bar, etc.

I found the seats to be quite comfortable, and the extra legroom (not that I need it, being 5'5"!!) allows for better recline than regular economy seats (though NZ economy has approximately 3" seat pitch advantage over QF and UA across the Pacific).

Don't necessarily expect to feel more refreshed/relaxed by flying Premium Economy over economy class when you get to LAX; you've still got to cope with the time difference.

If your jetlag experience is that bad, buy some Melatonin tablets when you're in the US to help your body adjust to the time differential more quickly (but consult your GP or Chemist before doing so).

Let us know what you think of NZ PE if you do decide to fly that way...

Are you sure it was AKL-HNL you flew? AKL-HNL only uses 767 which doesn't have premium economy (and business seats are the old ones not the new ones).

I have not flown Air NZ extra Y, but have gone twice to London on BA WT+.
The seat goes back further, more legroom and an the armrest is wider, in fact if in the 4 in the centre the middle 2 each have their own armrest, may sound a small thing but if travelling as a couple it is good. Again travelling as a couple try to get the two n the sides as it 2x4x2 layout. I BA the window seat is further from the window than Y.
If you afford it do it, again don't expect Business but much better than Y

I meant AKL-SFO. SORRY!!

It was just after NZ begane their service to San Francisco.

I flew Business Premier (using points to upgrade) on the SFO-AKL-BNE return flight. Lie-flat beds were nice, but for my money I'd settle for Premium Economy anytime.

That makes more sense. Note that while SFO used to have 747 (a few days a week) it is now only 777.

Thanks all for the wonderful advise.

For those who has travelled with Air NZ PE 777-2000, - can you advise if seats 24 ABC has a good enough recline?

Have been allocated these seats but concern I may not have as much recline as row 23.

Since there are only 2 row in PE for 777, there is not much of a choice.

Anything you could highlight to me would be wonderful.

Thanking all in advance again.

If you need 3 seats together then you probably have to take what you're given (there are only 6 possible options).
