Do the airport arrivals money changers give good rates?
Varies by the operating bank.
They take a rate from overnight prior to opening for the day and post the rates they are using for that day on the front windows.

This has me curious

Athletes are the just the spectacle. They are actually not important. The NOC lord it over all the athletes and their families who do not have the right to speak. Just like in a Roman Coliseum.
Who puts in all the hard work? The Athletes, families and coaches
Who gets free entry to all the events?: Athletes
What about the families?: No
What about the coaches?: Only free accom and boarding until their athletes finish their event. Once that happens coaches have to leave.

Who gets free entry to all the events but do not have to pay a cent or contribute anything except for some time at the NOC. Everyone in the NOC.

There are 2 ways to get to the Olympics - be an athlete or be inside the NOC.

Secondly,
Think why so many countries have said no to the Olympics

Many people have this point of view and I understand...both NOC and IOC could do more in terms of positive impact. I guess they have the luxury of being the oldest sporting competition and the associated desire that comes along with that in terms of people wanting to experience the event. Certainly many things would change if no one purchased tickets or sponsors stopped paying the massive ad dollars, but that won't happen.

Is happening. Many cities have knocked back their NOC proposal to host a Games. Many sports in an Olympics are never sold out - they end up giving tickets away for free. Most Olympic make a loss. There is very little legacy - look at Rio and you will see wasted infrastructure.

The Games don’t showcase the best of the sport.
Then there are sport specific issues at the elite level - the main one is the even playing field does not exist

My partner and I are hoping to attend the Tokyo olympics but really have no idea how the ticketing will work... Thanks to everyone for your input on here as it will make the task much easier!

Was also thinking that i might try and get a oneworld RTW in J to get us there using Tokyo as 1 of the stops and then timing the back end for Oktoberfest. I am QFF Gold so hopefully will find some availability...

I'm trying to get a handle on the possibilities and costs at the moment.

Football, baseball, and a few other things are my main interests. We'll just see how it goes.

Most of these tickets are not the prime sports like swimming and some athletics, so in the majority of sports tickets will be available on the day.

Baseball is big in Japan

I will be going again, but will be accredited media and will be taking photos. I've been to 2 other Olympics, London and Beijing.

I think that hockey is a great option when it comes to a spectator sport.
Wonder if the Olympics would be like the World Series 7's Events, if so Rugby 7's would also be a good event to go to.

Pretty sure it is.. it was Rugby 7's at the Commonwealth Games and they had it in Rio too.

Oh it definitely is in the Olympics, I was talking more about the atmosphere being similar to the World Series Events - which are a blast.

I know badminton is not popular in Australia, but it is a great sport to watch. The badminton players are so fit quick, and agile. An incredibly difficult sport to master. And it is an indoor event, and the atmosphere is fantastic.

But like others have said, i won't want to visit Japan during July or August. It is an extremely humid and hot time of the year. Even worse than countries such as Malaysia and Thailand etc

I used my Coles Platinum Mastercard a lot while in Japan and cash for smaller restaurants and shops. Easy ! (And yup, you can easily withdraw cash from the 7 Eleven ATMs)

I'm not too fussed about heat or humidity, although I'll need to be super conscious of the sun.

@nlagalle - You have a very interesting job and I imagine have some very interesting stories as well. Given your experiences (and i apologise if you have posted this elsewhere) i was wondering if you have any insights into the Olympics and attending the Olympics that you have observed that are different to the ones posted here that we might find of value?

Yes it's still very much a cash society but I find that's mostly down to people like to carry a lot of cash...even in shops accept cards many Japanese still prefer to pay cash!
I prefer to use cards, and most of my trips (7 and counting) I used below 30000 Yen in cash for two weeks. Mainly for small restaurants, temples, train tickets, etc.

On a minor sidenote, whenever you use a credit card in Japan, the cashier will print out the receipt, circle the total amount and then you sign the receipt. :)

For those with past experience, and not planning on doing a packaged trip, is there any vague expectation of hos much flight costs may increase leading into the games?
