Following some recent media stories and threads here on AFF, I thought it would interesting to see whether members have travel insurance for their Austraian domestic travel.

I do as part of my annual policy, but speaking from a TA's view (though I don't do domestic travel there days so my view may be a few years out of date), the great majority of domestic travellers don't both unless theyre spending a fairly decent amount OR they're renting a car and want excess coverage.

I have never even thought about it. I am happy to rely now on my Amex Plat Chg card.

I am in the fortunate position to be in the "pay now and sort it later" bracket though.

I also use the TI associated with my Platinum Charge Card. For a few years prior to having the card I had a full annual policy.

Prior to this I considered each trip individually and bought TI if I thought the risks of loss were too great.

Perhaps those posting their situation on the thread could also post their selection in the associated poll ;)

I chose the last option (consider the risk), but I don't think I have ever taken out insurance for domestic travel, with the exception of car rental excess cover when warranted. TBH, apart from that aspect of it, I don't really consider TI for domestic travel. Would never say never though, perhaps a need may arise one day.

Wouldn't dream of international travel without it.

The Question polled is:

I selected "I consider the risks for each trip & decide if I need insurance for the trip.", even though I do have an annual policy.

My annual policy covers me in any case, but even when without an annual policy, I have chosen to self insure for every domestic trip I have undertaken in the last 15 years.

So in regard to "... Travel Insurance for your Australian Domestic travel?" the answer is no, as I have an annual policy for international travel - domestic cover is a bonus.

I selected "Yes, I am covered by an annual Policy that covers me for both international and domestic travel." as I am on a subsidiary Platinum AMEX that comes with travel and medical insurance supposedly. And it appears I didn’t read all the options carefully again, ugh! Either way, it’s a yes.

The only times when I will insure domestically are:

a) When I'm booking a fair way out
b) when a car hire is involved

or

c) someone else is picking up the tab. :)

I wanted to say No I don't need it, but technically I'm covered by card insurance, only by default.

Personally no, I am not covered by any kind of CC insurance, nor do I take out policies for domestic travel.

I don't see the point really. I trust the airlines in Australia and getting the next flight usually isn't much of a problem.

The #1 reason I take out cover for international trips is for unexpected medical expenses.

I have an annual policy which covers me for international and domestic travel.

Before purchasing annual policies I used to take out travel insurance for every trip whether international or domestic. I don't want to leave anything to chance.

Prior to having covered by CC, I used to take out a policy if I was going to hire a car. More cost effective than taking out the cover from the rental companies

Amex Platinum Charge Insurance here. As stated elsewhere, hire car excess (and the "value" offered by the hire car company fees for reduction) are a major reason to consider domestic TI, but cancellation and other costs are also a significant consideration. May not be much of a concern if you are simply doing a 1 or 2 day business trip, and can afford to pay a last minute fare if need be, but a whole different story if you have booked a 2 week holiday and had to pre-pay a lot of accommodation etc.

Prior to the Amex Platinum, I would have been in the "consider each trip and evaluate the risks" category - wouldn't bother for a 1 - 2 day work trip BNE-SYD, using a cab/train etc, but would (and did) for a 2 week holiday around Tassie over the Xmas - NY period (what percentage of Tasmanian cars are hire cars? - seems like at least 50% at that time of year)

I pay for an annual policy for myself and all my staff who travel travel regularly. This covers Domestic and International. I always pay for the travel with a Platinum credit card which provides insurance, however I am not 100% confident with the "free" insurance.

Having being in a situation of having to repatriate my brother's body a few years ago I would never be without insurance again.

Most of my trips are booked through work so I am covered under their policy. They had a great setup with our security company and insurance for Delhi.

For my own travel, I currently have the Amex platinum travel. It should cover me on any trip I believe.

Around this time each year we Queenslanders tend to see a story about those poor Gold Coast tourists who get a large excess bill for the hire car they had when it got hit in storm season, it's good to see most people consider insurance mandatory if hiring a car. My travel is covered my an annual policy, and I have made two claims, one domestic for delayed luggage.
