Transit in Singapore

Hi

I hope you can hlep answer some questions about transitting in Singapore.

I am looking to travel from MEL > SIN with SQ, then on to HKG on the same day with Cathay Pacific.

I am hoping you can advise... will our baggage be checked right thru from Melbourne to Hong Kong?? If it is not what is the process for collecting out baggage and checking in for Cathay Pacific, would be effectively have to "enter" Singapore and then "exit" again.

Also with the answers to above questions in mind how long would you suggest we allow between flights.

Out of interest is there a reason not to go to HKG direct?

I would say you shouldn't have any problems.

SQ has no trouble through-checking my luggage on a

SQ ticket SYD-SIN-KHI on SQ (with an overnight in SIN)
DONE4 KHI-HKG on CX

They were however struggling to through check it to LHR, as was more than 48hrs out.

The trip is for approx two weeks, the plan is to have about 8 days in Hong Kong then about 6 days in Singapore.

I have found it is cheaper to purchase MEL> SIN return airfare then SIN > HKG return airfare, than purchasing MEL > SIN > HKG > MEL.

Tickets will be purchased separately, am currently trying to purchase the MEL > SIN at the moment but having trouble with my visa card on the SQ website.

Then i'll purchase the CX flights.

SQ will be able to check your baggage through all the way to HK. Just make sure you have a copy of your SIN-HKG ticket or eticket. You will need to show this to allow SQ to check through your baggage.

Upon your arrival in SIN, go to the CX transfer desk and get your SIN-HKG boarding pass. Notify them that you have already have your baggage checked through. It wouldn't hurt asking them to double check that your baggage is recorded (provide them your baggage barcode that you receive when you check in in MEL)

Out of interest - how much is your quoted fare? The is a CircleAsia fare that costs around $5500+++ in Business class all on OW.

I am paying $973.77 return MEL > SIN then about $530.00 return SIN > HKG all in economy, we are trying to do this on the cheap to allow for more shopping money!

all up the airfares will be approx $1500

$5500 is far more than i was intending to spend in the entire trip included airfare, accom and spending/shopping money!!

I would have expected a MEL-SIN-HKG ticket all on SQ would be cheaper than two separate tickets!

I have no idea what dates are being looked at, but using the multi-city/stopover engine on SQ I get $1147 for dates in March (all on SQ)
