Hi All

I am flying from VTE - BKK on TG and changing to CX to HKG.

Given that VTE is a little behind in the technology stakes I know I'm not going to be able to check through to HKG (and the carriers aren't partners).

Does anyone know if you can check in for CX airside in BKK? I would prefer not to have to clear customs just to check in to CX, although I appreciate that I may have to.

I have previously flown back to BNE all the way on TG but this time as I'm going CX BNE - HKG - TPE then BR TPE - VTE then TG VTE - BKK before I pick up CX again as I'm on one of CX's 'passport' fares.

Cheers

I suppose the two part answer is:

1, Whether TG have an interline agreement with CX (transfer of luggage between carriers agreement), and
2. if yes is the answer to 1, whether the CSA checking you in at VTE know enough to tag your bags VTE/BKK/HKG.

So long as your bags are tagged VTE/BKK/HKG, then you'd simply head for the CX Transfer Desk (airside) at BKK and present your CX ticket with coupon BKK/HKG and the baggage tags VTE/BKK/HKG (they'll want to sight them).

If not tagged through to your final destination (HKG), then you'll have to exit through C&I, get your bags and check-in at the CX desk. A waste of time, but if that's the only way...

To which FF program are you crediting the CX flights?? QF or Asia Miles??

At this stage QF, but I did post the question about the AAplatinum challenge as I don't have any status with QF except I belong to the QC.

I usually fly *A.

Lots of useful responses tothe AA question but I can't work out if it's worth doing it as the flights aren't AA code share.

I think the mileage will be better off in my QF account as I'm more likely going to want a domestic tix for my wife and I've found QANTAS quite reasonable at getting a J class free for her when I have a paid J tix.

Any advice though would be appreciated. I belong to a range of FF programs, some with no miles in them at all.

I belong to;
AAdvantage
ANZ Airpoints (my main)
Malaysia Enrich (Gold)
Cathay Air Points
QANTAS FF
Singapore Kris Flyer

I find Singapore Kris Flyer and Cathay Asia Miles the easiest and cheapest for redemtion, however it's 2:1 AMEX points rather than 1:1 into QANTAS.

QANTAS just don't do where I need to go withut routing SYD.

I'm Platinum Starwood and the points go 1:1 from them so I've used lots of points from Starwood to bring my wife with me around SEA on a points tix.

Cheers

I'll put a further response to the AA Plat Challenge in that thread - I honestly believe that as you have AA & QF (but neither with any status??) you need one of the Oneworld carriers to have some decent status.

Agreed that it is probably easier to only make 1 phone call to arrange domestic travel. But the AA redemptiond are cheaper (particularly the longer distance flights) than QF. But if you are just doing MCY/BNE or MCY/SYD then choose QF for crediting your miles.

Interestingly, you have a number of double ups in your programs - 3 Oneworld (as most of us have at least 2) and 2 *A, plus Malaysian It's smart to have multiple, to be able to credit flights to the program that's goin to give you the mst benefits.

QANTAS just don't do where I need to go withut routing SYD.

Don't quite understand what you are saying here. I'd think you'd be routing a lot of your flying through BNE as as hub, rather than SYD (as you appear to do more Asian trips).

I'm Platinum Starwood and the points go 1:1 from them so I've used lots of points from Starwood to bring my wife with me around SEA on a points tix.

Sheraton actually credits in 20K point blocks at a ratio of 4:5 to Qantas (so you end up with 25K QFF points per 20K SPG point transfer). So you do travel to USA (as you stated you go to SEA).

Thanks Lindsay, and your wealth of info!

I never fly ex MCY as there is no J class.

My comment re QF was in relation to this trip, it was better to use CX ex BNE, but generally yes, BNE is my hub (I avoid SYD when I can).

I have only recently joined CX and AA, CX when I found out I was going and put Starwood and AMEX points in to get the free tix, and AA when I read about the challenge, which I am still confused about. Should I credit to AA? Will I wind up with some status?

Malayasian was a gratis Centurion add on, so I took that as well, so you can see I was really *A (since AN days).

Up 'till now most travel has been Pacific, a little domestic and once every couple of years to US.

I forgot about the bonus 5000 points from Starwood with the 20k transfer, which I usually get as I can usually find 20k to move.

Cheers

Believe me, my level of knowledge is only a scintilla when compared with NM's. I wouldn't even start to debate him on anything.

A pity with that small anmount of Oneworld flying, in prermium cabins, that you haven't got any status. BNE is defintely smaller but a better hub than trying the Domestic to International shuffle. I'd rather fly to MEL (and have on a number of occasions) than brave SYD.

Now I presume that the CX flights are in J (you haven't mentioned) and I think they are BNE/HKG/TPE...BKK/???/BNE. If they are in J, then (and only then) is the AA Plat Challenge worth going for - as you'll understand when you see the CX Table. You wouldn't do then if they were in any Economy fare basis other than H,B or Y (although I would think that at the very least, if you deigned to have to fly in Economy, you'd be flying on these fares rather than discount economy).

If you did put those sectors to AA Plat Challenge, you'd qualify on the HKG/TPE flight, or at worst on the BKK/??? sector (that would be the better one, as you get the 100% Points Bonus on the sector that you reach
AA Plat). If you need some help with getting your head around the AA Plat Challenge, why don't you email me or send a Private Message.

I too try to avoid SYD if I can, especially for outbound flights. However there are some exceptions where I am happy to use SYD. These are flights to/from LAX, where there is no F cabin ex-BNE, so no chance for a Z upgrade. And of course flights LAX-SYD depart from Terminal 4 meaning I get to use the Flagship Lounge (JW Gold self serve :D ), while BNE flights depart from TBI, meaning sub-standard lounge and no skybeds yet (coming soon).

For my next trip I need to get to HKG on a day the direct BNE-HKG A330-300 does not operate. So I have chosen to transit via MEL and take the overnight A330-300 from MEL-HKG to connect to my next day flight to KUL. MEL makes for a better Domestic-international transit than SYD.

I wonder if that is about to change or perhaps Sunday was a freak, I caught one of the terrible twins and she was equipped with F seating operating 176 from LAX-BNE

MetroAir, so your flights that are eligible for the AA Plat (Lack of) Challenge are:

CX BNE/HKG in J
CX HKG/TP in J
CX BKK/??? in ???
...

Can you complete the last part of the flights (sounds like school, doesn't it)

This is only temporary as the 2-class 744's go to AVV for their Skybed upgrades. We will see some 3-class aircraft on some routes, and 175/176 is a prime candidate due to being 3 days a week. But they will continue to be sold as 2-class and will be operated by the upgraded 2-class aircraft as they come back on line.

Well with those 2 mid-haul and 2 short-haul flights in J, you achieve AA Plat when you land back in BNE (actually, you achieve mid-flight).

I can email you the spreadsheet to show the calculations, MetroAir.

Yes please, and I will call you on the w/e re the challenge.

Cheers
