Turns out the "new" amenity kits on this route are in fact the old kits from long haul J (see Ausbt: Qantas' new Kate Spade & Jack Spade business class kits - Australian Business Traveller). Pity, as I was hoping for one of the new funky Kate Spade kits to match my bag. I guess they had leftovers to use up....

Managed to get two of the three champagnes on offer. Duval on the way to NZ, and Charles Heidsieck on the way back. I much preferred the later and we did in fact drink the plane dry rather quickly.

We did have help!

Looking at a MEL-AKL in a couple of months so found myself on the QF.com Trans-Tasman J product page, where under the Business lounge tab you can find this handy piece of information:

"Prepare for your flight in our exclusive Domestic Business lounge, available to Platinum Frequent Flyers and customers travelling in Business."

Resurrecting old thread - have a comment but also a question.

Been on 4 recent trans-tasman flights in QF J. Champagne offered on all 4, but amenity kit only given on one. All were late afternoon / evening departures. Other than that service has been excellent.

My question (which I can't see any other info on): I have an upcoming need to be in Auckland. Timing a bit awkward so am contemplating doing the red eye from Melbourne to save time out of the office. Has anyone done this flight, in either J or Y? If so, what are the meal options (dinner, supper, or just breakfast)? Will have F Lounge before thanks to it's new hours, so not a problem. Have had great experience Y and J on the Melbourne evening departures to Auckland, but intrigued to know of experiences on the overnight flight before I decide.

Thanks for any info or pointing to other threads.

I was under the impression that amenity kits were only for departures after 6pm.

As for the red eye, it's scheduled at 3:40 which makes for a rather short night. Personally I would stay away from it if you need to be rather functional the next day.

Thanks. Didn't know about 6pm rule - but even so, 3 of those 4 flights left after 6pm, but only 1 had the kit. Pretty irrelevant on such short flights but inconsistency strikes again.

Yes, I may give it a miss. Did my first red eye flight in many years from Perth last month, and struggled a lot the next day. Not as young as I used to be! Trouble is ex-Canberra to make an evening Sydney or Melbourne international connection kind of rules out the bulk of the afternoon, as I take a bit of time transiting (not to mention desire to have at least an hour in the F lounge - a luxury I know).

Any other advice on what the flight is like would be welcome.

Just out of interest, has anyone received a J amenity kit of late? I've been on two SYD-AKL flights (6:35pm) of late and not received a kit. I actually don't think they are that useful on such short flights so didn't bother asking - and everything else on the flights has been fin - just curious to see if there's a change or if they've run out!

While I usually decline, champagne has been consistently offered.
