Thanks again to all those who contributed to this thread with suggestions on what to do on my recent and inaugural trip to Tokyo with my wife.

As I believe I mentioned in that thread I wanted to be able to contribute back to the community with a short Trip Report and hopefully provide some assistance for others making their first trip to Tokyo also.

With the trip now out of the way, I thought I would put my thoughts together in a few posts to this thread and answer any questions anyone might have.

Background:

As a bit of a background for those who have not read my other thread regarding this trip, I had booked 5 days in Tokyo just before Christmas using QFF points and a Classic Award.

This was booked between the 3rd and 9th of March to coincide with my wife's 30th birthday on the 7th and the tickets were given to her as a surprise on Christmas day.

Originally the booking was for Economy both to and from Narita however a month or so before the trip, and one Expert Flyer subscription later, I managed to keep an eye on things and note when some Premium Economy award inventory opened up and was able to pay the 3,500 assistance fee to have our outbound trip change to Z class.

Unfortunately at the time Premium Economy award seats weren't available on the return journey but did open up a few days before the trip, but I decided against booking these - as it happens it all worked out for the best anyway :)

Thursday 03/03/11:

We head over to the IL's place in Brighton with the kids earlier in the day on the Thursday.

Given that we were about to leave the boys there for the longest period of time either of us (my wife and I) had been away from the kids we were keen to make sure everything ran as smoothly as possible - not least of all to make sure the kids were on their best behaviour for the ILs who were doing us a huge favour by agreeing to look after them :)

I had booked my usual guy for the trip from Brighton to the airport for 6:45pm so as to be able to get to the airport for 7pm and the opening of Check-in for our flight. He was caught in traffic from a previous pickup and had arranged for an alternative who ended up picking us up early and getting us to the airport around 6:45pm.

- Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD)

We made our way across to the First Class and Business Class Check-in area which was largely empty except for one CIC in the Business section. A quick discussion with the CIC confirmed that the flight wasn't yet open for Check-in and that we should have a seat and fill in the pre-departure forms while we waited.

Just after 7pm the CIC waved us over and we went through the usual procedure for Check-in with about 40Kgs of luggage between the two of us! She seemed quite surprised at the concept of achieving WP on domestic flights only (this is the first international trip either my wife or I had taken in over 5 years) which to me demonstrated the lack of cross pollination that occurs between QANTAS Domestic and International ground teams.

We headed through the Customs area, which was so empty it seemed almost useless having express cards, and headed up towards the First Lounge.

- QANTAS First Lounge

Being our first visit to the FL I was more than a little disappointed that the Spa area was closed (as indicated by a little sign on a chair behind the glass door) but thankfully mrsntaus wasn't too fussed by the whole thing.

When we sat down for a meal we were the only people in the dining area, however by the time our food arrived another 4-5 groups of people had entered the FL and were ordering or waiting on food.

I ordered the Wagyu Beef and mrsntaus the salt and pepper Squid, which I have read good things about here. We both agreed that whilst the S&P Squid was very tasty and definitely worthy of praise, the Beef had a taste and melt-in-your-mouth quality that was simply divine! (So much that I almost thought about ordering a second helping!)

After a bit of a further look around the FL we decided it would be best to take a walk out on the main concourse, given that we were likely to spend most of the next 10 hours sitting down. We purchased a couple of Lonely Planet books from the Lonely Planet shop and headed towards the gate for boarding at 9:20pm.

- QF21 SYD to NRT

Shortly after arriving at the gate we realised how popular QANTAS obviously is with Japanese school groups visiting Australia! Whilst nowhere near as noisy as an equivalent Australian school group would have been we were a little apprehensive as to what our return journey in Economy was going to be like if school groups frequented QF21 / 22.

About fifteen minutes after arriving at the gate the Business / Premium line started boarding and we were soon on the plane. I had booked 29A/B for the extra leg room, which was there but in hindsight I now know that these seats are set back slightly due to there being a storage cupboard in front of them. Whilst giving additional legroom these are not as good as 29J/K which do not have the storage area in front of them.

The crew on this flight, whilst competent and seemingly willing to help, seemed very flustered and under-prepared - something which appeared to continue throughout the flight. I mentioned as much to one of the attendants on our return journey whose team were exactly the opposite, and he agreed that this was something they see even from their perspective, and in those cases he preferred to just put his head down and do whatever he needed to, to get the job done.

'Supper' on the flight was a choice of Chicken or both, my wife and I alternating between the two not necessarily because we were that hungry but just so we could try out the meals in Y+. I had the beef which was a far cry from the quality Wagyu in the FL and so ended up leaving most of it and finishing off mrsntaus's Chicken :)

With Supper out of the way and the lights down we attempted to get some sleep...

Very nice report. And Tokyo is one of my favourite places. I used to stay at The Westin all the time. What did you think of the Teppanyaki?

We only spent a short time in Tokyo so were back in Australia by Wednesday only a couple of days before things hit, so are well and truly safe and sound.

Thanks for your concern!

Friday 04/03/11:

Thankfully the flight up to Tokyo was fairly uneventful. The Captain had mentioned the possibility of a few bumps as we passed the Equator and I ended up being awake at that time, but there was really nothing more than the standard slight turbulence for most of the trip.

Being almost exclusively a domestic traveler I didn't think I would be getting too much in the way of sleep, however I managed to get about 3-4 hours in total after the lights had been turned off and before breakfast service was commenced.

The rest of the flight had the same hurried and uncoordinated feeling that we experienced at the beginning of the flight, but nevertheless we enjoyed the flight mainly due to not having to be back in Economy :) (I must admit to having a fondness for Premium Economy which I believe may become a bare minimum for Intl flight from now on)

We started our descent into Tokyo with still an hour to go before being able to land after the 6:00am curfew. The Captain came on the PA to inform us as such and also let us know of the need to delay our landing by the use of a number of maneuvers to waste time. We ended up hitting the ground just after 6:00am and the CSM came on to welcome us to Tokyo at 6:50am.

Exiting through the front door with Business, we were in the Terminal fairly quickly and made our way to Customs. Upon reaching our first queue we were informed by a customs agent that we needed to fill in form which hadn't been provided to many of us on the flight (whereas the Quarantine form had been) so we hurriedly completed the form and made our way our towards our Baggage.

Baggage started to appear fairly quickly however we were waiting a while before ours arrived at the carousel. I wondered at the time whether we would have been better off waiting for the First Class checkin to open in Sydney and whether we would have had different baggage tags and a different result at the other end - I must admit to not having paid any attention to what sort of tags were placed on our bags in any event.

After collecting bags we made our way to the Airport Limousine desk to book our trip to the Westin on the 8:05am bus. Having some time to kill we took a walk around the airport and purchased our first Sushi from the convenience store.

As punctual as ever we boarded the bus and had left the kerbside by 8:06am on our way to the Westin Tokyo.

- Check in - Westin Hotel Ebisu

Being a fan generally of Starwood properties I was quit impressed by the quality and standards set down by the Westin.

Upon checkin at about 11:30am we were told by the person checking us in that they would normally charge extra for early checkin but in this case he would not be charging us :)

We stopped by the concierge on the way to our room to get directions to the station as well as to gain some information on the best place to change money and possibly experience our first 'real' Japanese meal and were recommended to start off in Shibuya.

After unloading bags and the obligatory shower and change of clothes we ventured out to find the station.

- Ebisu Garden Place / Shibuya

Those of you who have stayed at the Westin before will know of the Ebisu Garden Place being somewhere you need to walk through on your way to Ebisu Station. We took the opportunity for an early lunch - at Burger King of all places! - and browsed our way through the Mitsukoshi department store before heading to the undercover moving walkways that take you to Ebisu station.

Later in the trip, after a few colder days, we realised there was an exit from the Westin that takes you directly from the Westin through the Garden Place and the moving walkways to Ebisu station completely undercover - definitely a good choice when the wind is up and dropping the effective temperature to only just above freezing!

We made our way the one stop to Shibuya, with the usual amazement of a couple new to the ordered nature of Tokyo and its' public transport system. Luckily it wasn't peak hour for our first time so that my wife could start to get used to the idea of how the system works, and what to expect once things got a little more crowded - she is one of those people not so happy to be in crowded places for a prolonged period of time.

Once in Shibuya we got a little lost trying to follow the instructions of the Concierge to find the money changing place but in the end made our through without too many hassles, stopping at Starbucks and the Disney Store amongst numerous others in the area.

I had been given details of a Teppenyaki place in Shibuya by the Concierge which we attempted to find without success, toward the end of the day. Feeling a little tired and at the time expecting to be visiting the Fish markets early the next day we thought we'd cut our losses and head back to the hotel for an early dinner there - a little unadventurous I agree :)

- Dinner - The Terrace at The Westin Tokyo

After returning to the hotel and depositing the afternoons shopping in our room we made our way down to the Terrace which is the Westin's buffet restaurant, for dinner.

Whilst I was most impressed by the range of seafood on offer and availed myself of as wide a variety as was practical, my wife was most taken by the dessert offerings available and I believe would have skipped the main meal had she let her desires get the better of her.

A number of people had stated to me before the trip and there is almost 'no such thing as a bad meal in Japan' and the food at the Terrace definitely fit the description of a good meal.

Service was particularly attentive and I left with a smile on my face, which also may have been as a result of the multiple Asahi beers that were imbibed during the course of the meal :)

As mentioned above we had been planning on making a trip to the Tsukiji Fish markets early the next day, but looking a little more into the weather and having planned on visiting Disneyland on the Monday, which was slated for rain basically all day, we decided to swap the plans for Saturday and Monday around which meant heading to Disneyland on the Saturday.

With that decided we headed up to our room for a good night's sleep.

I actually had no problems getting first class tags on my luggage when checking in at CBR and then onwards to Asia. Therefore, I reckon you should get them anywhere.

They are trained well in CBR, look who they need to put up with!!

And before you start lets just say I have a very strong connection with the joint!

Enjoying this report. I was at the Westin Tokyo from 25/2 to 7/3 - so agree about the weather (esp. looking forward to the report about Monday the 7th!) There's also good (cheap) eating to be had on the basement level of Mitsukoshi as well.

I did Tokyo back in November with a couple of friends (was lucky chose that then otherwise was going to go next month) and thoughfully enjoy myself (did Osaka and Seoul too) Did Tokyo Disney (only half a day) and the Mt. Fuji tour which was amazing. Be interested to find out how you like that.

Don't think next time and just go for it ;)

For my visit to the F Lounge a month ago I had the grilled haloumi + squid for entrees, the Wagyu Burger + chips for my main, w side salad, another mini-burger, topped off with sticky date pudding, and cheese plate :D I was totally stuffed but at least I didn't have to buy ;) any food onboard my JQi flight to HNL.

Saturday 05/03/11:

- Tokyo Disneyland

On the whole Saturday was a fairly straightforward day.

We left the hotel a little later than planned and made the now familiar trip to Ebisu station in order to make our way towards Maihama station and Disneyland. Changing at Tokyo Station for the Keiyo line we were soon making our way from Maihama station the short walk to Disneyland.

What greeted us at the entrance to Disneyland should have prepared me for the sort of day it was going to be. My wife and I have been to most other 'Magic Kingdoms' around the world but never had we seen so many people in one place queuing for literally hours on end to be able to ride on their favourite attraction. If anything making your way through the crowds was almost worse than peak hour on the streets in Shibuya!

I realised afterwards that given our choice of visiting Disneyland on a Saturday and the Japanese fascination with all things cartoon, we were no doubt competing for ride time with thousands of Japanese yearly pass holders who were taking advantage of the (relatively) good weather.

By the end of the day with the queues and crowds we realised that we had, at best, maybe seen 2/3rds of the park and queued for 5 rides and attractions in total. We got to see two of the parades, including the night time parade and fireworks and participated in the obligatory purchase of many souvenirs so were relatively pleased with the day as a whole.

At about 10pm we made our way back the way we had come to our hotel for a relatively early night.

I couldn't agree more, was like that when I was there in November.

The queues were horrendous, with upwards of 60min waits on any of the rides we might have wished to go on - and thr FastPass systems weren't operating making matters more difficult.

Needless to say, we didn't have that much of a chance on any attractions.
