2014 cont. Continuing up the Zambezi to do a few orbits of The Smoke That Thunders before a landing at Livingstone (LVI). It was wet(tish) season, so Vic Falls was cranking. I had previously been in the dry on the Zim side (dry season is the best time to go to that side), so I was looking forward to a visit on the Zambian side (wet season is best on that side).

Hmmmm - how do I keep this to three pics? Aaahhh, stuff it, I've always been a nonconformist... - and, after years and years of practise, I've totally mastered that asking for forgiveness is always easier than asking for permission.

When Flying Fox started this thread with this rule: "Post only the three photos from one round trip that you like best and share it with us all.
I look forward to seeing some amazing photos." , he was obviously thinking "quality photographs of quality subject matter" i.e. of the interesting/quirky/never seen that before variety.

Sadly, it's starting to feel like the 3 hr slide nights we had at Auntie Ada's place 50 years ago.

The three per holiday is getting more difficult but I'll keep trying. 2010 and off to the UK. It was a bit more than that though. We started in London in a beautiful flat on the ground floor of a three story Georgian townhouse, drove to Dover via Canterbury. Then took a 12 night Scandi/Eastern Europe cruise on NCL Norwegian Sun - Copenhagen-Warnemunde (drove to Rostok) -Tallinn-Saint Petersburg-Helsinki-Stockholm. On our return to Dover Eurostar to Paris. Then back under the channel and up to Glasgow before getting back in a hire car to Edinburgh, Corbridge, Burnley, Manchester, Bath over another 12 days.

Three photos. So many of you will have been to everywhere we went, some of you multiple times, so three photos that mean something to us

The House of Agnes, a very quirky and very old hotel that we stayed at In Canterbury



A crazy vodka cruise we took in Saint Petersburg. Traffic was apparently typical SP so the vodka drinking started well before we got to the boat. It poured rain, we drank huge amounts of vodka with accompanying chocolates and gherkins. It was one of the funniest nights we've ever had on any holiday.



The TSR-2. For anyone interested in military aircraft this is one of those 'have to see' planes

October 2011 - our first holiday to Japan. Osaka-Nara-Osaka-Hiroshima-Kyoto-Nagoya-Hakone-Tokyo and back to Osaka direct to airport to fly home. It was a fabulous holiday. Japanase gardens, temples, castles, Hiroshima, food, horrific zoos and aquariums, food, beer, lantern festival, museums, galleries, Toyota factory, SHINKANSEN!, beer, business hotels, one luxury hotel, wonderful people.

We still talk about this. Our worst memories of Japan involve our visits to Osaka aquarium and Tokyo Zoo. This poor lonely beluga is imprinted in my mind. How can a nation that is so nature based have such weird ideas about animals in captivity?



The affect that Hiroshima had on me is similar to our visit to Tuol Sleng in Cambodia. Hiroshima was so much more than reflection. We met some great people and best of all we went to the baseball. It was brilliant!



Beer. Japanese beer is the best

Zoos overseas are generally a disappointing affair. I normally avoid them. We have one of the world’s best zoos right here in Australia in any case.


Aquariums are hit and miss. Some are very good, with strong research and conservation credentials.

Exhibits of local fish species can be excellent.

Conversely having a beluga in a tank is awful.

Agree completely. I'm not even sure why we went to the zoo. Gee it was awful.

We went to NE Aquarium last year and agree definitely a good one. We had big issues with Chicago's on the same trip. They had beluga as well. Horrible. I asked one of the keepers some questions they were not really happy to answer. Taronga and Western Plains Zoos are excellent. San Diego's two as well. These research focussed zoos are very different to the tourist attraction type ones.
