To platinum or not to platinum

Not as good but the JASA itinerary below's net cost is 74000 QF pts (cost 84000 but earn 10000 pts) for $75 and earns 320 SCs with an overnight in Hobart

PS: Can someone tell me how you post the screenshot of the QF webpage above??

Ok guys, no double status email here unfortunately!

I am travelling a fair bit these days, and have until July 31 to earn 420 more status credits to hit platinum.

I'm based in Sydney - worth the cash or should I sit on gold for another year?
Open to routing suggestions as well

Thanks for the help!

If to get the status just involves travelling for the sake of it, then just sit on gold. Use the money saved next year to improve the quality of some travel that you plan to undertake anyway.

How do you work out the SCs on a routing like this? I've got the double SCs email and I could do with a small status run before 30 June (I think that's when it runs out) just to keep me on target for my November anniversary date.

how many do you need Homer?

I have booked BNE-MEL-SYD-NAN-SYD-MEL-BNE get 360sc and costs $1268. Not a bad deal.

Have done SYD-AKL-SYD on LAN for 160sc for $700, but OMG hour leaving 5am AKL.

Or SYD-CBR J for 40sc for $340.

Good luck

That's interesting...2 days travelling in business with overnight stay. Could get me over the mark to platinum.

Dave,

As I have said many times before. This is easy to say for someone who already has all the perks and status. Would the advice be the same if the tables were turned and your status did not already exist :?:

The status is ok to have as a result of doing travel but a waste oto spend money just to get the status. Due to not caring about status these days ( though nice to have if it comes naturally) and choosing flights purely based on best airline of the day ( which atm is not QF et al ) I may well no longer keep Platinum status; meh, not bothered really; the best value of status comes at Gold , the incremental benefit of Platinum is fairly marginal to me

400 SCs will cost enough money as not to be even close to worth it; if within 40SCs then would be worth seeing what sane way could get the status

I would not go taking flights just to get a pretty card

400 SCs will cost 60000 points and $320 to QF, as well as parking, accommodation and taxis x 2 trips, say another $400. In return you will get 10000 points back so the points cost is 50000, you will get two + years of lounge status and higher points earning for your flights as well as better seating allocations and upgrade chances.

In my case had I been WP rather than SG those extra points would have been 53000 for the last year, so the cost in my case for two years of QP access is $720 if we assume zero dollar value for the other benefits, if you have not got the golden parachute of LTG then its not a bad spend but the value is really up to the individual.

Only if the following year you earn less than 600 SCs

kpc - can you tell me how to get that itinerary? I've been trying a while now !

Dave - I see the value in it as I described in the earlier post.

Another question for you all - I have worked out that if I'm creative with my work travel over the next six weeks I only need an additional 370 SCs to qualify. (Will qualify on the final day!)

Can I book two seats on a CBR-SYD-Hobart-SYD-CBR at once? Time is pretty limited over these coming six weeks, and to take four days out of my schedule to do this is too much. The other problem is going to find availability for two seats at once ;)

I'm sitting on around 1200 SC at the moment, and need 1400 to Qualify for WP.
I have decided to do a SYD-MEL-HBA J ASA Run before end of month. 320SC with the promo. Cost is $150 and about 40k in points. I don't need taxis in either SYD or HBA or a hotel in HBA.
An extra year of Qantas Club and more perks for $150 to me is a good deal as l don't have LTG and have never being this close to WP. But l do understand where Dave is coming from, if you have reached LTG, then l would also fly on a OW airline based on quality, not just QF QF QF.
QF Gold is really enough as you get lounge access being a OW Sapphire. WP, double points and F Lounge access and slightly better seat selection, but is it really worth it? Each to their own l guess.

You only are getting an extra year should you get Platinum in year 1 and then fail to attain 600SCs the next year. If you would attain the 600SCs the next year anyway, then there is no extra year

Um. I choose airlines based on quality which is generally not OneWorld (other than for domestic AU) ; eg this week using CY for LON-LCA ( proper business class seats rather than economy rebadged) and then EK onwards to Australia ( nicer than any OW 1st class I have come across ) . I did use AA recently since they were the only carrier that could meet my TATL requirements at a sensible price in business class

Dave

The other issue not mentioned in this thread is timing. As I understand it, you effectivey get close to 24 months the higher status if you reach there at the beginning of your year. That's my understanding. Thereafter you may fall back one notch if you don't achieve enough SCs.

I always find it's easier to maintain than achieve for some reason though.

Also as I mentioned the anytime lounge access is a big plus for me. Worth the effort and points.

Anyone have an answer as to whether I can book two JASA award seats in my own name on the same flights? 84,000 points for 400 SCs... sounds too good to be true?

I chose "multicity" from the "Anytime awards" section, and chose "flexible" with dates, and simply chose the city pairs Syd-Cbr, Cbr-Hba; Hbr-Cbr, Cbr-Syd. For the Syd-Cbr leg, I chose the indirect option which went via Mel; and again the indirect option via Bne for the Cba-Syd leg. This was for a random Sat/Sun in August as I figured there would be more J award availability on W/Es when the business travellers were at home! Having said that, I can't currently myself reproduce this itinerary at the same costing:shock:

managed to find kpc's deal for mid-october weekend if anyone is interested, definitely a worthwhile one if you're looking for SCs

I have been keeping my eye on my own SC's as my "year" started in April. To date i have 400 SC with another 200sc in the pipes up til the middle of July.

I am hoping that with all the work travel I have over the next 9 months I will be very close to WP. If not I will probably do a trip via a destination or two to get me over the line simply as I will have a few OS trips next year, so i will get my value out of it.

If you are always (or mostly) flying paid J, then there is very little benefit (perceived of otherwise) paying extra to get status with a single airline, be it QF or otherwise. You dont need anytime access, as it is granted with your J ticket, you dont need the increased likelihood of the wining ticket in the upgrade lottery as you are already up the front, guaranteed economy is of no use either as you already have a J ticket.

As for the rest of us Y/discount Y flyers, those extra benefits are worth allot more than the straight fiscal.

The question posed by the OP related to Emerald status. The benefits of business class come with QF Gold status and there is no need to spend money on getting platinum in order to have these. The incremental benefit of Emerald over Sapphire is not worth much expense imo

There will be no consensus on this issue...it's a matter of value to each person...different strokes for different folks.
