Thoughts on laptop storage v2

I would continue to do what I've done since 2006, bring a Kensington security lock to at least make stealing hard, and not advertise the laptop, but still use it and take it with me.

I have now switched to using just my iPad when travelling. I use webmail (with access to folders so I can archive emails) and docs to go to review documents from the team.

The iPad then just sits on the desk or in my satchel.

Much simpler than a laptop now...

I'd go with a combination of not advertising the laptop + buy a cheap one if you think it could be stolen...

A Kensington lock makes it hard to simply pick up a laptop and walk off with it, but give the theif 5 minutes in your room by themselves and it wouldn't be a problem at all, especially if they where not too worried about a small bit of cosmetic damage.

Oh I know about that, but it’s all about making their life harder if they’re going to make my life hard by stealing in the first place :p

Yeah, but the cost of a kensington lock goes a long way towards purchasing yourself a new cheap laptop.

I always book a hotel with a safe in it to put my laptop in, and if I can't do that, I take my laptop everywhere with me in my backpack. A laptop (or rather, the data in it) is just too valuable to be left unattended anywhere -- even with a kensington lock, I reckon. Can't be that hard to cut those cables. (Then again I do worry about who in the hotel staff can access the room safes too..)

Perhaps I have just been super lucky in this regard but, I have never stored my laptop or netbook in a room safe (in fact, I have probably left it laying out in the open..) and have stayed at many hotels in the US without incident.

What do others do?

Not that this is a valuable contribution but i have done the exact same thing too, many times without incident. Maybe we are just lucky? Maybe were silly but at the end of the day I still ohave everything i went away with.
