Hi guys,

I realise this probably sounds like a rookie post, but after having done 4 x RTW trips in the past 4 years, my wife and I find ourselves stuck for ideas for our next holiday - mainly due to a few limiting factors.

Firstly, having taken all those trips previously, I'm now on a ridiculously low leave balance (and not too keen to purchase a whole lot more) so the era of 5 week holidays (like we took in Jan-Feb this year for our honeymoon) is sadly over for now. We're looking at a ~2 week holiday, in early January when I have to take leave anyway (yeah, peak travel season for some areas :( ). We have plans for big trips to Africa, and some parts of Europe we haven't yet done (Amalfi coast, Santorini, more of Spain than just Barcelona/Madrid)...but those are longer trips we'll be looking to do in a year or two.

I'm also keen to maximise my current points and top-tier memberships (QFF WP, SPG Plat, Hyatt Diamond, Hilton Diamond) in case I lose them next year...AND, I want to fit in at least one more visit to the F Lounge, just in case I drop down to SG! :D

Finally, we'd like to do as much of the trip on points as possible (not averse to paying for some flights, and we'll definitely need to pay for some accommodation - just prefer to maximise the points usage if possible). I currently have ~90,000 QFF points, ~25,000 SPG points and ~50,000 Hyatt GP points, as well as ~110,000 AMEX MR points which could be put towards QFF (1:1), SPG (0.5:1) or Hilton (1:1) as needed.

We're pretty open in terms of where we could visit (though we've recently done Vietnam, HK, Malaysia, Maldives and the US, so somewhere other than those places). We thought about Bangkok and broader Thailand (but flights are $$ and award availability is pretty rubbish at that time of year). Also thought about NZ, which could be an option (reasonable award availability, nice in Summer, and I haven't been to Queenstown for years), but there's zero Starwood presence there now (pity, the Westin Auckland was a great hotel). Somewhere with a W would be great! But that's probably pushing it...

Other places that my wife hasn't visited (but I have and would be happy to return to) - UAE, Bali/broader Indonesia, Japan...though some of those are a little tricky on award flights. We've done a fair bit of Australia over the years, so we're keen to head O/S for this trip.

Generally on holidays we look for nightlife, nice restaurants, culture and just general sight-seeing. Just as happy exploring a major city as we are off the beaten track. Pretty open really!

I realise the above is pretty specific, and I'm not asking for anyone to do research for me, but if anyone has any suggestions or has been in a similar situation, I'd love to hear your ideas! Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
- Febs.

Places i would think of doing in 2 weeks is:
* a 10 day trip around Japan and 4 days in Beijing
* 13 day or so safari in Tanzania/Kenya (Masai Mara, Ngorongoro crater etc)
* North/South Island of NZ

From the East coast South America might not be too long a hop if you haven't seen everything you want on your RTWs...

Coz i don't like the cold that much and prefer longer days for photos and exploring time etc if forced to take in January I would probably lean towards a Southern Hemisphere locale...

I guess i have the luxury of not being constrained by having status or lots of points to influence my decisions... :)

One option I forgot to mention above - QFF to Manila, then some time in Boracay? That wouldn't take up a full 2 weeks though, and not sure if there's much to see/do in Manila?

Thanks, great suggestions. :) I should've added South America to the list above - that's probably no.1 on our "to do" list for our next big trip, but we'd like to spend a good 4-5 weeks exploring a few different countries.

NZ is sounding the most feasible at the moment - hire a car and make our way around.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Hawaii/Alaska for a bit of contrast
Jordan and/or Turkey/Greece/Islands/Egypt and if you are adventurous: Georgia/Azerbaijan

My next little out of there adventure ... Nepal and Bhutan. No idea why but I just think it would be cool and completely different.

No, that would not take up 2 weeks. Not much to do in Manila except for food and shopping. However, if you combine Boracay and Palawan with Manila, that would probably take up 2 weeks.

Sumatra!

Central and Southern Sumatra have some suprisingly great tourist infostucture currently in place. From what I have been told, it still exists from a period in the 60s/70s when Sumatra use to be popular with the Dutch and German tourists (and before Bali becoming the default go-to destination) so you get some amazingly 5 star hotels and experiences for peanuts as well as do something slightly off the beaten track but still able to cater for the discerning traveller.

Yeah avoid Banda Aceh and anything north of Medan, but central and southern Sumatra has a heck of a lot going for it, facinating volcanos, beaches and surfing, some awesome wildlife and natural scenery - and more importantly not the bogan hellhole that is Kuta!

I've always wanted to go skiing in Iran, not that will help with point chasing. Just need to work out how to convince Mrs Here2go.

There is lots of Hyatt presence in Indonesia. I have stayed at the Bali Hyatt - it is tier 1. We stayed in a club room and found the lounge relaxing and the staff great. We did not explore bali at all. Just went directly to the hotel - we did a little bit of shopping near the hotel. We only stayed for 3 (maybe it was 4) nights. There are two Hyatt in the Bali area - Nusa Dua and Sanur. You can go on to some of the others in Indonesia. You can use qff points to get to bali and have a decent hotel stay without spending any money on hotels - Bali Hyatt club room 8000 points.
We paid for the room because it was a promo season and the points we earned there have booked 4 nights in NYC at 48Lex

The Thai countryside would be a good time to visit at that time of the year especially Northern Thailand.

Some of the places you could visit are

- Ayuthhaya
- Kanchanaburi (river Kwai and possible visit into Burma)
- Chiang Mai and the Golden triangle
- Roi Et or any other place in North East Thailand and a possible visit into Laos
- Buriram and a possible visit into Cambodia and why not spend a few days there as well

Your Amex MR points could get you both there and back on SQ with plenty left over. You may still find some availability.

Fly fishing in the South Island,, base yourselves in Queenstown and enjoy,,
That's what I would do with a 2 week holiday,,

I'd mix it up - Old/New/Beach or River

Plenty of options:-

Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) for the old
Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi for the new.......I know both are quite old cities, but they are cosmopolitan cities.
Hoi An (beach) or Luang Prabang (river)

So many options....good luck deciding.

And then there is the W Seminyak Resort and Spa ;) Which would be perfect for Febs criteria :D

Somewhere with a W would be great! But that's probably pushing it...

Head to SIN first and try out the about to be opened W Singapore - Sentosa Cove, then head to DPS starring 3K (and access to SIN F Lounge if open) stay at the W Seminyak, do you usual Bali and greater Bali exploration and once you're done, head to USM and stay at the W Koh Samui Resort and Spa! :) And to top it off, come home via BKK and stay at the brand new W Bangkok (to be opened in December) ;) Ahhh now you made me wanting to go and book a trip!!!

After posting skiing in Iran, I went and looked it up. Looked like an adventure, but not a holiday. Credit cards, and international ATMs don't work due to embargos, Visas, etc., so you're walking around with a money belt with crisp Euros, and DFAT says don't go. Looks like an amazing place, but you'd need a week to relax afterwards I reckon.

Wow, what an awesome response. Great variety, and a couple of things I never would have thought of! Definitely something to think about. Will let you guys know what we decide on...in the mean time feel free to keep the suggestions coming!

My wife is better at it than I am! They might like it as a couple!

A day or two maybe, but probably not 2 weeks. ;)

Now that sounds like a top itinerary!!

My next little out of there adventure ... Nepal and Bhutan. No idea why but I just think it would be cool and completely different.

Nepal is fantastic, definitely worth doing, I haven't yet dont Bhutan but hear rave reviews about it. We had the Kings daughter's husband in Las Vegas speaking to us at a Luxury Travel Convention 2 weeks ago, was very interesting.

On the topic at hand, Oman is somewhere definitely worthy of consideration, one of the best and most under rated destinations I've been to.

Given your experience, Travel Guru, that's quite a recommendation. Tell us more? What, in particular, gave it the appeal for you? Has been on my "think about" list for some time but has not yet come into sharp focus.
