The Velocity Status Run Master thread

Hi everyone,
Coming up to that time where I'll need to grab some SC quickly to get to Platinum, before my points expire. I see all these tricky SC runs on here - any tips on how to work them out for myself? Short of inputing 1000 different permutations into the VA website...
Thanks team!

Plus how many SC's you need, can you do overnighters and what is your budget ??

With my current bookings, I would end up with a total of 1020 SC at the end of September. But in the meantime, 160 are due to expire early September. So I will need 140 new ones before November (when the next batch are due to expire).

Can definitely do overnighters, even weeknights. Would really prefer not to spend more than $800-$1000.

Quick but probably stupid question, I'm flying OOL to MEL return for work I don't see anything about SC's so I'm presuming Saver earns 0 Flexi Some & Business more. I'm about 100 off Gold but have about 6 months so I'm loathed to pay $250 each way for Flexi when I can get a business reward for approx 19000 + $20 each way. (Not that I really want to fly business on a 2 hour flight anyway). I presume no points plus pay earn SC's is that correct? I found a chart that gives the letters that earn SC's but I can't find that anywhere unless I've actually bought the ticket.

Another thing promo codes where do you find those ??

I'm fairly good at earning miles from spending but SC's very confusing

Saver OOL-MEL will earn 15 SC's each way.

Points + Pay to buy a Saver/Flexi/Business fare will earn SC's. A Reward will not.

Thanks

What if you buy a Flexi & use points to upgrade to business do you still get the SC's (obviously at the Flexi rate)?

A flexi OOL-MEL will earn 30 SC's and Business will earn 60 each way

Thanks TomV, Just to clarify - when I book a flight entirely with points, that is called a Reward seat?

If I book say a BNE/SYD flight which using a SAVER fare is about 9600pts I get no SC? That's my experience.

But if I pay a combo - say 6000 points and the rest in cash (usually it's like $25-30) then I do get SCs??.

Not quite. A reward can be booked as points and cash to cover taxes, or straight points. When you look at flights it will be under the "Reward" column. If you continue further right along the page it should show "Saver/Flexi/Business". These should cost more than the respective award flight in points, and are the equivalent of buying a cash fare. I also believe that the price will fluctuate to match the actual cash price of the same flight.

Today on Expedia: flying late September, CPT - ATH via JNB & AUH return, $2,780 in J. Should earn 480 SC, flying EY/SAA. Just get to CPT.

Re: Need 4 DJ sectors and 130 SCs by Sept 1

Anyone have any tips/recommendations for gathering 105 SC in 3 months?

I know it is a decent amount of time to do it - it will be for me to upgrade to Silver membership, very keen to try it out.

Well, firstly, there isn't much about Silver to "try", and status is probably only meaningful if you fly quite a lot. And if you fly quite a lot you'll hit silver without too much trouble. On the other hand, if you just want to fly for the enjoyment of it, why not. It is an expensive hobby though...

Loads of things you could do, and plenty of people here know lots more about it than i do. Have a look at SYD-NTL via AKL. Search with google flights or something, and then book using an OTA that allows international multi-city bookings. You can come up with SYD-BNE-AKL-MEL-BNE-NTL for 240 SC in J. Assuming you're based in SYD, fly Rex or take the train home. Should get it for about $8/SC. Not cheap though and YMMV.

Have fun.

I agree. Other than a couple of lounge passes, silver is basically the same as red- the benefits dont kick in until you hit gold.

I tend to agree with the others, silver is not really a level you'd normally push for as the benefits aren't much. The biggest benefit of silver is the discounted lounge membership (IMHO), but it's pretty expensive to gain status these days by status runs. I'm tending to aim, at best, for about $5-$6 per SC as the $3-$4 SCs seem to have disappeared (but I don't really need to do status runs, so I haven't been overly active in researching, either). That'd price silver for you, at best, at about $600 to $700 which doesn't make sense for a discounted membership. As you've accrued 145 SCs in 9 months, you possibly do fly enough to warrant looking at lounge membership, but only you can evaluate that.

Re: Need 4 DJ sectors and 130 SCs by Sept 1

Hey guys,

I need 50 points by the beginning of September to maintain SG. Any ideas how I can do this at the cheapest?

Pretty sure I'll be going to Melb but that's only another 20 points.

Home is Sydney.

Thanks!

Cheapest? You haven't mentioned dates, but search SYD-OOL-MEL-OOL-SYD which will give you 50SCs for circa $400 using a disc code. If you're time poor or don't want to overnight, try buying one sector of your SYD-MEL return in J. That would give you 50SCs as well, but it certainly isn't the cheapest. Otherwise, use a disc code and just search dates that suit you and various routings out of SYD or perhaps even NTL.

Need 45 SC in 9 days ex MEL

Hi All,

I need a frustrating 45 points by 20 July to maintain gold status. Ex MEL. No additional sectors required.

Any suggestions as to how to do this reasonably cheaply? I can't work it out for less than about $700 (MEL-HBA-MEL x 2).

Thanks in advance.

Forget Hobart and take advantage of the MEL-OOL run. Discount codes won't apply, being less than 20 days away, but you'll get what you need in just over half a day.

Flexi both ways will net you 60 SCs return for around $500 (including the credit card fee)

Flexi one way and a Saver on the other leg will net you bang on 45 SCs for around $400.

Fares quoted are for next Saturday. Fares are slightly higher on Sunday, and fractionally cheaper midweek.
