The totally off-topic thread

Oh dear, remember the primary school concerts where any kid who ever picked up a recorder got to play for the audience of stalwart (suffering?) parents. Hope the piano exercise is not along the same lines &Denali.

Actually, I have never really got involved in the "off-topic" thread much. But I like it.

Let me explain.... (through my rum-infused brain)

I live in a complicated existence. A huge part of that existence is flying. I average these days about one full month a year airborne - 2 hrs per day. 450,000 km this year. When you add in airports etc that time doubles.

I used to be a police officer. Only yesterday (again, having just done a trans-pac, I was tired and emotional) and I lamented on facebook that I miss the brotherhood that profession entailed.

I have moved on. But I certainly miss that feeling of belonging. But now I get that same feeling through AFF. We all have our realities - and I understand the air-road-warriors, as I share their pain, but I also understand the less frequent flyers, and their interest and passion. For me AFF has become a centre of my existence. I can log on at any hour, and read and share and enjoy.

I have only met a couple of AFF stalwarts. JohnM, the best guest I ever received in Colombia. And DrRon - and his better half - a dinner on the sunshine coast.

I missed Rooflyer by seconds, or minutes. I stood on the dock at Puerto Montt in Chile merely a few moments after he left there.

If I was Australia based things would be simpler.

But I love this online community. Which is why I get worried when I get warmed up and want to blast posters. Which is what I am avoiding tonight....
The off topic thread is one I avoided for a long time. I never saw the point of the title. And then I clicked and was hooked.

Italian gardening gene finally kicked in with my middle aged siblings... I never got it.

My sisters thing is orchids, she has one that only flowers in the dark.

21yr nephew just sent me pics of his garden, super impressed. Crazy kids, all about his corn and chillies varieties.

Awww, shucks, mate :). And you and your family's hospitality was just so amazing for someone you didn't know from a bar of soap - thank you :):):). And I was with RooFlyer at Puerto Montt while we were making the countdown to the point that we would pull the pin and get going - which, unfortunately, we did just a few minutes too early .

The only good thing I have to say about my dad is he was a hell of a gardener. The entire back year, year round, veggies and fruit.

For someone that had such an unhappy marriage and life, he was either hiding out there or just really enjoyed gardening.

Mum in laws first crop of home grown tomatoes was during the week. As Ive banned hubby from having tomatoes, the office was very happy to receive.

Anyone watching Struggle Street on SBS? Most of the time, Im sitting there thinking 'you poor cough, you never had much of a chance' but occasionally, rarely thankfully, Im not as charitable.

Sue from Brissy did my head in last episode. I didnt have much sympathy for her but the rest of them, heartbreaking they are stuck in this cycle.

Another example of the perils of hiring a scooter/moped/motorbike overseas.

I didn't know your bike license can lapse, I always thought once you had a bike license it just kept going as you renewed it.

I assumed he did not pay the renewal fee, much like a car driver's licence where if you don't renew it by a certain date it lapses.
Regardless what sane person would hire or ride on a scooter in Asia? Certainly not me.

I gave up 40sc and a work dinner junket to attend the primary school concert last night. It was a long 2hrs. I keep telling myself it was the right decision.

If you had missed the concert you would never have got it back. SCs can be had anytime. It was indeed the right decision IMHO.
