Re: You know you are a frequent flyer when ...

Someone is talking on their mobile phone while standing in line to be served, and they are still on the phone when they are served (coffee shop, supermarket checkout line, customer service line, etc.)

What's your judgement?

Trend in cafes / tale away coffee joints is that they will not be served until off the phone (which I agree with, together with any other service that requires more than a polite 'hi'). Supermarkets? Doesn't require the same interaction up front so not so much of an issue, although I would put the call on hold until we'd gotten through the "hello .." etc.

Phones are meant to be used in non-confined spaces is my belief. I never answer my phone on the bus, or the train. I tend to keep it on vibrate only so it doesn't also bother other pax. Might answer it if I am in the car (PASSENGER ONLY) if my companion(s) are ok with it and I know I can get off it quickly.

Really they should get off their phone, place their order, and maybe call back once they have found themselves a comfy seat and can focus on their conversation. That's my two cents.

That's fair enough unless your mobile is the point of contact for your job. If I'm on call or called from work I will always answer my phone wherever I am but I step outside or away from any interruptions to other people near me. In my car I will advise the caller that I have passengers and if it's urgent and not confidential they can speak with me.

Re: You know you are a frequent flyer when ...

Clearly most of these comments from people about phone usage don't live on their phone most of the day. Often I have b2b meetings and need to pop out to get lunch (while in a meeting) at which point if I'm dialed into a call, I will still have it in one ear but still have a quick hello / thanks while ordering my food. Nothing rude about it IMHO.

Re: You know you are a frequent flyer when ...

I may have a half face one and some filters I could send/give you - I will have a look on Monday to see if there are any and that the cartridges have not expired - although that may not really matter for what you are using it for
That would be fantastic if you can do it. I am leaving for Thailand in 10 days and would love to have them for the wife to try.

Please send a PM if possible.

I consider it insulting to the person serving the customer and understand the reasons why it shouldn't be done.

Haven't done it and will stand back and let others pass me if I really need to have the conversation. Otherwise I keep the phone on silent until I'm in a position to take calls again.

You mean the server?

Personally, if I have an important call in the supermarket I'd keep going. The transaction requires no interaction and I doubt the checkout operator cares one way or another, probably happy to skip the false pleasantries tbh.

This is why I like self service checkouts. I dont need a layer of communication when buying groceries - having said that I usually say hello to the person assisting with self serve problems.

Don't be judgmental?

FWIW, I try not to be on the phone in those situations as it is rude to the server (and potentially people around you). However similar to PF, there are times I have to answer the phone, even if I need to excuse myself from a meeting. Yes - it can be perceived as rude, insensitive, selfish, disinterested in current company/meeting, or whatever negative perception. The best way is to be polite and step away out of earshot.

Several years ago I had a meeting with a Consultant in a hospital premises. She wasn't meant to be on duty, but was somewhat on call. Our 30 min chat took ~2hrs as she was called away several times. She was always very polite about it, and while frustrating to me, completely understandable. She did the right thing by prioritising her patients over a meeting which was important, but less important than patient care, and potentially human life.

Yes it was annoying to waste 1.5hrs, but it helps put things in perspective.

The person being served, or doing the serving?

FWIW, I agree - It is polite to step aside and let the line continue without you... especially if it is a fast moving line.

If it is a line for the ticket booth at a French or English train station you would be remiss not to make all your days/weeks/years worth of calls because hell might freeze over before you are actually served.

LOL. There are only 2 women to worry about and both know I cannot be controlled.

My father only ever gave me one piece of advice - stay away from fast women and slow horses!

Note to self :
Always go to the Chanel counter to purchase skin care when wearing scrubs with "physician" written on them. Walked away with the most incredible amount of samples ever :D
