The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Yeah I've got more than enough points to cover any change fees, thanks for the advice.
I did find there was routing via Malaysia quite often as well so throw that into your mix potentially? We're doing a layover in Singapore for a few days purely for this reason.
KUL, HKG, SIN can all be solid stopover points even MNL (although you'll need to connect onto Jetstar Japan). HKG however tends to be the most efficient due to its position and connectivity on Cathay (and that they fly to more than just Tokyo).

Theres also weird married segments with JL that show say a KUL - SIN - HND flight but not the SIN - HND so be aware of that.

I most certainly have considered doing MEL - SIN - KUL - SIN - HND all in one day before.

Is this new? Just got handed this for a snack on mel - Syd. Pretty sure my last flight down late August was still cheese and crackers.

PS. Tastes alright but not spicy.

Noticed the pleasant increase with snack options by QF internationally to USA the other day.

Hi guys, hoping I’m posting this in the right thread.

Am trying to book flights from Sydney to Haneda, JP in May 2026. The only available business class flights that I could find with points were Jetstar which I would rather avoid. Looking at historic availability with Flightseats.Io it seems that there is almost no available flights between 250-100 days out and we are currently at 240ish days.

My question is, should I just wait until 100ish days out and pay for premium Flightseats alerts etc to try and snag our business class flights? Should I just book economy and try to get upgraded? Should I book flight to alternative country ie Korea, Taiwan if I can get business seats and then make our way from there?

Why HND? QF fly to NRT from MEL & BNE.
QF upgrades are *never* guaranteed
JQ Business, about equal to QF premium economy, can be OK for a day time flight. Look at DrRon's recent trip report.

Thanks for the reply.

Am happy to fly into any of the other airports, I think I originally thought of HND because I flew in there once before many years ago. I understand upgrades are not guaranteed and I'm bottom tier so probably quite unlikely to happen.

Will look at DrRons, thanks again.

So May (after golden week) is traditionally a weaker travel period to JP so there may potentially be more availability but don't count on it. Consider also via MEL (QF79/80) and BNE (QF61/62). Also the daytime flights for SYD are both the emptier ones.

Finally you can also consider roundabout solutions if J is the goal. SIN - HND is often available as is HKG - TYO. MNL is as well but from MNL it's Jetstar.
