The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Try QF.
Depending on your QFF status, this would put your call to either their overseas call centers, or HBA if P1/WP.
Surname needs a match to passport.
They might have to cancel, get points back and rebook.
Only QF can ("assist"), in inverted commas.

I am also hoping to use my first order promotion which offers me 5000. Will the qantas wine voucher invalidate my bonus points and first order promotion.
I used my PC $50 voucher and got 1st order bonus 5000 points without any issue, but I did call and speak to a "wine advisor" who was very helpful.

And welcome to AFF @cloud_above
Happy travels ✈️ (and drinking)

Hi all,

I'm booking a flight from Washingtion DC Reagan to LAX for next year, and when I proceed to buy the tickets it says that theres no luggage included. I'm paying for this flight with points using classic rewards. It also says that additional bags can only be purchased at the airport ( screenshot included).

I'm hoping to add luggage before hand via AA portal when I go manage my booking there. Has anyone had any experience with this and knows if we can add luggage before we board our flight?

Can you add this to a bigger booking? Ie from lax are you flying to AU? If so, baggage would be included at no cost.

Not too sure what "above route" you're referring to, but I'll assume it's something like SYD-LAX-XYZ (domestic destination in USA on AA).

Yes you can. As long as your AA boarding pass shows your QF Emerald Status (if the booking is on the same PNR then that will be issued by QF anyway, if separate bookings, should be on AA issued BP). Anyway yes you can. Airside connector means it's a 10min walk from the Flounge to T4, and another 5ish mins to T5 from there.

Yes if on the same booking then your bags will be tagged all the way through. HOWEVER, at LAX you need to clear immigration & customs, which in practice means picking up your bag(s), walking through customs and then replacing them on the "Connecting Flights" belts (up the ramp to the left after clearing customs, and then you can go back through security at TBIT to go to the Flounge. SO yes bags will be checked through, but you still need to collect.

If on separate bookings, then bags would be tagged to LAX and you'd need to check in with AA @ T4 in that case which is a short walk landside.

I'll be travelling QF |MEL-LAX in J arriving 0850 and departing on AA at 1225 onto SFO .
I'm oneworld emerald .
I'll have BPs thru to SFO and bags checked thru.
Can you walk me thru how to get from where i drop my post customs bags in TBIT and then get to the Qantas Lounge.

Ok this post gives great detail about the connecting flights security checkpoint which is usually less busy than the main one.

When you come out at the connector, head back to TBIT, and the QF lounge us just down the stairs (half tge time I miss it and have to backtrack 🤣) but it's pretty easy. Even if you use the elevator and get to L4 the lounge us easy to find

Hey - planning a trip with family (4) for next xmas holidays.
Looking to grab business classic rewards seats - when i do search for that day, only 2 reward seats come up in business.
Question is - if I grab the 2 business classic reward seats, I know that I also get access to business lounge, but as a bronze member, can I also bring in the other 2 as guests in the business lounge?
Also, mid flight, if i ask nicely the qantas staff, would it be possible to do a swap? Im sure the kids would want to experience sitting at the pointy end.

Yes to guests:

Swapping is up to crew's discretion

Two business classic rewards limitation is very standard. You will rarely find more.
No issues with bringing in 2 guests on the same flight as you - they will be granted access on the basis you are a business class passenger (status not required).
Changing seats mid flight….. not technically allowed, but if you are very lucky it can be done.

To find two J reward seats at xmas is pretty good in and of itself imo. What kind of route is it?

As for swapping in flight. Very much up to the crew and CSM. Usually frowned upon - but better than constant visits back and forward which would be disruptive which some like to do and isn't appreciated.

I was mistaken - it will be mid January - Melbourne to Hamilton Island.
For the swapping, I will be taking one for the team...
Plan is for me to be in economy throughout the flight, the wife in business, and the kids can do a swap mid flight - my thinking is if the kids do a swap, instead of parents, flight crew will be more 'understanding'.

Aha donestic. Makes more sense though unsure if crew would be more or less OK with swaps mudflight. Guess you won't know til you ask! :)

I've done the swap a couple of times, to put Mum up into bus, while I go back to her seat in econ - where Dad and I could drink beers and talk about aviation related topics. I did ask the CSM as we sat down if it would be ok, so it wouldn't be a last minute thing. Each time they said yes.

Hi everyone.

I'm relatively new to flying and I'm looking at signing up for QFF and looking at the name section they state:

" Please enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport (or if you don’t have a passport, as per your driver’s licence or birth certificate)."

My passport has my first and middle name in the given names section and my surname(Ie. GIVEN NAMES = John Doe. SURNAME = SMITH). The QFF form has only first and last name.

I feel like I'm overthinking things a bit it but I'd rather be safe then sorry particularly travelling overseas. Do I put my first and middle name in the first name box(John Doe) like so:

Or do I just put just my first name:

Just put your first name. In my experience, that is the most accepted version for when you are doing international booking on other airlines. Qantas, continues to have middle initial on many early accounts (like mine) but that has not caused any confusion to date for me, but it is not what is commonly requested on other booking systems. Stick with your first name "John"

Also, its an idea not to put too much info into QFF.
Reason why, is that once in a while, you get scam email, or worst, account hacked/broken into, and points have been sucked out,.
QFF members can use points from 5000 QFF points onwards, and scammers know this.
We don't know how, but somehow, scammers are able to log into members account, and use the points up.
Sometimes, 100,000 points used up in hotel bookings in Indo, when the member has not left Aust.
Also, as a lower status member, your calls, if you have to the QFF service center, will be overseas, so to make it easier, just have a first and last (surname).
Date of birth on the website, if the scammers get that deep, they can then use it too.
Sometimes, they also lock account for some reason.
QFF for lower status members, is no fun.
Once you get to WP/P1, and get the HBA call centre, its great.
Most important thing, is to have the right mobile phone number in the system, as they sometimes need to send 2fa to it, 614xx, etc, no zero in the front.
Try not to change mobile phones either, it can be a pain to inform them of phone number changes.
Lower grade status member get their calls passed on to the QFF outside providers, non QF/QFF employees, HBA for higher grade QFF status members are QF/QFF employees.
We on here, do not have a direct link to QF anymore, in the past we did, but not now.
We have a retired QF pilot, and maybe some friends of QF staff, QF staff themselves, maybe, they can't say out loud, but a link from here to QF management, its more so a favour done if someone helped from here.
