Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Hi @col moody, just for clarification:

Qantas Frequent Flyer Points and Status Credits are not the same thing (no such thing as Status points).

Generally speaking, if you use QFF points to make bookings using what are called "Classic Rewards" you will not earn any further points or Status Credits for those flights. The exception to this is if you are are also a member of Qantas Points Club, that is , you've earned enough QFF points through means other than flying. But in that case, you only earn the Status Credits one person would earn, not 6x - each traveller would earn their respective amounts. Classic rewards are the discounted seats that Qantas offers on a limited basis.

If you use points to purchase what is known as "Points + Pay" then you will earn Status Credits, but again, only per traveller, not collectively. Points + Pay is the more expensive option that can be used on any fare on any flight, as you're effectively buying a fare using points rather than cash.
Basic question that's probably been answered, but how does the work for Classic Rewards flights with other airlines? We recently did a Oneworld RTW and points/SC are slowly trickling in.

As expected, QFF SC came straight away (40% because U), JL we were economy (T) and it shows 0 SC and points, and BA has just surprised us with full SC and points for one of the (U) Europe flights. I'm a bit confused as to whether we should be expecting them from other airlines/flights and what classes would/wouldn't be eligible. We flew JL/Cathay/BA/Finnair - mostly U but a couple of annoying T.

If you’re referring to PC earn, the QF coded flights award SCs as per the table. Anything beyond that is a bonus in your favour best not broadcast far and wide.

Classic reward flights do not earn points and SC's, (PC exception) (mistake can happen:))
9.4 Qantas Points are not earned on all flights
9.4.1 Qantas Points are not earned for travel on:

(a) flights or booking classes that are not listed in or are excluded in the Airline Earning Tables;
(b) infant fares (infant fares do not include infants travelling in their own paid seat);
(c) charter flights;
(d) freighter flights;
(e) free tickets;
(f) Classic Flight Rewards;
<snip>.
Points club can:- read the t&c's
These calculators will not show Status Credit earn rates for Points Club or Points Club Plus members for eligible Classic Flight Rewards - view the Classic Flight Reward tables for details on eligible flights and earn rates.

For 18signole, if you do want QFF and not full, but at the least you get it, is to fly RJ from BKK - AMM, and then something cheap from AMM to DXB.
Not ideal, but as RJ is in OW, you will get QFF SC.
Maybe, RJ also flies to DXB, haven't checked for sure.
===
From the RJ website, yes, for Dec, most dates, there are Y+, Yflex and J seats.
Transit AMM of course.
Might be more time consuming and $$$ than direct from BKK - DXB.

Yflex

35000 base fare approx 35000 THB

Thanks for the quick reply Gaz0303! That suggests that these codeshares are only available on itineraries that originate in Australia. Unfortunately I am starting from Bangkok. No real option it seems - I guess it will have to be Qatar for minimal status credits or Emirates for convenience (DXB is my hub for onward African flights).
Yes, this is absolutely the issue. QF only file fares for codeshares involving Australia. The codeshares exist to provide pricing options (and QF selling its "marketed flights") to many beyond points from DXB.

It's also likely QF do not have rights to sell BKK-DXB in their own right, so even though the codeshare may exist, there are no fares filed, so they can't sell it on its own. Indeed, on checking, there are no fares filed (as expected) for QF.

Though for S&G I looked at just about every QF fare I could for SYD-BKK or BKK-SYD and none allow routing via DXB as it happens. Even full YOW/JOW type fares specify EH only and routings involving multiple Asian carriers to connect, or EK on BKK-SYD (v.v.) which of course makes perfect sense.

Interestingly I can't find any fares filed from anywhere (I tried various places in europe, ME3, africa etc) by QF to BKK via DXB as EK codeshares.. so.. it's a bit curious to me but it's definitely certain you can't just book the standalone between BKK and DXB as the QF codeshare unfortunately.

Heh heh.
===
On the EK purely BKK - DXB, there is no option of a QF codeshare, so your earn little QFF points and no QFF SC wise, is nil under the QF and EK agreement.

Incorrect. QF codeshares on EK373:

codeshare.jpg
EK is not in OW, so that is the problem, and EK only carries the QF code share on some of their flights, not all.
This has nothing to do with oneworld. This is about the QF/EK partnership, it is also about what markets QF can sell fares in (see above)

Ok, the QF code does exist, but try and dummy book it.
RJ is the only one.
===
And what comes up, is the "cities you have selected can only be booked using Qantas points".
So even if QF8373 exist, its no use for QFF points and QFF SC earn, only good for "burning points".

I explained why.

QF can't sell fares between BKK and DXB. It's as simple as that. They do not have the rights.

In the same way you might see an AA codeshare on MEL-ADL, but they can't (and won't) sell a ticket on that flight sector alone.

This is now well OT to this thread, but maybe of some interest given the earlier question. To close this one up a little bit more, I found a fare (one of many no doubt, but for example) that has permitted routing and application to go via BKK and DXB to Europe (in this case, LON):

Fare basis BLWEU - fully flex eco fares to London/Europe which can route via Africa in one direction (as a matter of interest) and fly to London on BA.

one of the permitted routings:

3. SYD-SYD/MEL/BNE-TYO/SIN/SHA/MNL/KIX/JKT/HKG/BKK/BJS-SIN/
SGN/SEL/OSA/KUL/HKT/HKG/CAN/BKK/BJS-QF/EK-DXB-QF/EK-LON

which basically means one could route from SYD/MEL/BNE through all those Asian ports and continue to London via a QF or EK flight - so via SIN on QF being the most obvious, but you could fly via BKK and use QF codeshare on EK(or EK number) (ie -QF/EK-DXB-QF/EK-LON ) as part of the permitted routing.

Yeah, it's an expensive fare, but that's not the point. This is an example of why the codeshare is there for a sector like BKK-DXB (and many others).

Almost certainly someone like @madrooster can explain this all far better than I :D (since I am but a dabbler)

Sorry, I don't think my question was clear (or my brain isn't following lol)...

I am Points Club+ and I know I was entitled to the 40% SCs on the QF flight that we took. What I am surprised/confused about was that we also got (full) SCs for a BA flight on the same itinerary. I'm wondering if SCs from partner airlines area to be expected on Classic Rewards flights (with PC/PC+), or if this was an error in my favour?

I understand the normal earn rates for paid flights.

Suggest you don't enquire of the FF programs involved.
I had a recent flight that I was kind of hoping for a bonus (based on some comments) but nothing turned up after 2 weeks and I knew I couldn’t put a claim in 😂 but low and behold 60 SCs and some points posted 6 wks later…😉. Strangely, SYD+1 (PC also, on same booking) didn’t receive the bonus. 🤷‍♂️

We have booked a economy reward booking to Hawaii for 2adults 2kids (all QF flight numbers via Sydney from Adelaide). We are only bronze so no additional benefits and just reviewing my e ticket…..

For baggage our etickets state 1x - it looks like something is missing. Are there different allowances for baggage and reward bookings?

Or is each adult entitled to 1 bag max 32kg each? Kids same plus 2 extra kids items which we are not planning on taking a stroller or child seat so the 2 extra are not relevant.

To my knowledge you can't book a Qantas operated & marketed flight with no checked bags, so each adult should be eligible for 1x32kg despite what the e-ticket says.

You can check baggage allowance via MMB. In the app, “VIEW DETAILS” \ “ViEW/PURCHASE BAGS”.

I am flying Emirates First class to Dubai. As a Qantas frequent flyer, Qantas Club member (with 2 valid Qantas Business lounge passes) and Titanium card holder (with 2 valid Qantas First lounge passes) can I access Qantas Business Lounge and/or Qantas First Lounge before departing Sydney?
