The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Talking ORCs - if a flight is changed due to Qantas cancelling a flight like 3 months in advance, will this still typically be granted ORCs in the same way that an on-the-day disruption would be? Or because you need to "accept" the changes, is ORC not granted in this case?

I know @kangarooflyer88 seeks changes intentionally via JQ schedule adjustments but in my case it will actually be more convenient to fly the simplified itinerary!

It is still granted but you have to request it.

Worked well for me last year when my SYD-MEL-WLG was Swapped for SYD-WLG; a couple of months out - quicker arrival at better time of day and still go the SCs as if Id flown via MEL,

But on another booking where I had a mix of paid, classic awards plus a points upgrade (SYD-BNE-CNS), i never did get all of the ORCs for the PC classic award flight. They gave most, but I ultimately gave up chasing as I easily qualified for WP anyway and was only 7 SCs missing.

I was pondering this scenario myself.

SYD+1 and I were originally booked QF J YUL-ORD-LAX-SYD (all QF codes), but AA did an equipment swap on YUL-ORD that only had whY. Next best option was AA/QF YUL-DFW-SYD (which I’ve just flown). In doing so, missed out on 2x squiggles (QF sectors - no biggy), but less SCs overall PLUS much less SCs towards a LB.

Based on @Lynda2475 remark, might give a try.

Thanks, helpful. This is a classic reward so will be seeking SCs via PC and the current plan has Mrs Excel only attaining WP by 1 SC of margin, so an error not in our favour would be costly.

Please let me know how you go! How far in advance was the equipment swap?

It's not just JQ, it's also QF. QF moved my flight back from ADL by just 10 minutes and I called them up and got moved onto a connecting flight via CBR to ensure I earned my loyalty bonus this year (am 10 short).

In my experience yes.

I had a multi-sector international booking with tight connections 😉 fall apart due to a schedule change.

ORC on a DSC CR were honoured after some back and forth.

Great to hear. Okay, if I can't get an adjustment (edit: a more complex routing than I had initially booked) to earn the extra SCs the hard (but free) way then it sounds like this is at least an alternative option.

Out of interest, how much value do you usually get from classic rewards on the domestic flights on busy routes? I'm just looking at SYD-BNE with the Red e-deal going for $246 on my chosen date & time in December but has CR's available (with $51 fees). That comes to $195 value for 8,000 points, i.e. about 2.4c /point. Not awful and certainly beats getting a new toaster...

The return flight sells for $155 so a CR would go for about 1.3c /point (not enough value to burn points for that).

Only you can decide on if it is of value to you. Comes down to how easy it is to earn those points (usually very) and the going rate for a paid fare on QF and alternatives.

If I need a last minute domestic flight same day, then the classic reward in Y wins hands down if there are no sale seats.

Now with PC, I’m getting into the habit of booking return flights SYD-MEL as a mix of points and paid if there aren’t Sale fares on the day/time I prefer but CR seats are available. I still get SCs and fly when I want.

A recent domestic economy classic reward redemption I made was over 9.5c/p, even after adjusting for taxes. The usual "I probably wouldn't pay that much in cash" rule applies, but yes, demonstrates huge value is possible, even in Y. Plus (small but non-zero) SCs for PC.

Hello all,

Just booked a reward flight. One of the sectors is SYD-CBR on a Q400 but I’m only able to input a seating preference and cannot select my seat. Just wondering if this is normal? Thanks

Just be slightly careful with this calculation as i would've usually flown another airline if it was indeed that high. Flex tickets gets really stupid sometimes.

Open the booking in rj.com and check if there’s a eTicket number. If not, contact QF (probably should contact them anyway if you haven’t received the eTicket email).

Im dreading this will be the same as those horror stories you hear as there as i think my ticket was the last avaialble one

Edit: all sorted! Called qantas only waited 30 mins. They said something about a problem with ticketing and issued it.
Email came through straight away.

I wonder what would have hapoend if i didnt call? Would i have lost the seat

Say you booked a transcon flight in A330 J but before departure QF swaps the equipment to a 737, are you able to request to be changed onto a different flight with an A330?

For the appropriate fee.

Change fee depending on fare type and potentially a fare difference.
