The Operational Upgrade Thread

Have an EK flight KUL-MEL in 2 weeks. According to your logic I should expect an upgrade as EK upgrades all Qantas Platinums?

My SIN-MEL QF codeshare on EK404 had several upgrades into F including me/ I say this because it was obvious some passengers were like kids in a candy shop - photographing everything.

The flight was full according to the CSM announcement.

JohnK, Hope you get one too!!

Thanks. I fully expect to sit in economy. To be honest though I'd rather use up my luck on more important things in life such as health and long life.

EK640 DXB-KBL 04 Jul. 'Ding' goes the scanner. J>F, seat 2F :)

Couple of weeks to wrap things up, then I check out of KBL for good.

EK432 DXB-BNE 18 Jul. 'Ding'! J>F, seat 2F again :D.

After 4 years in KBL, still healthy, still alive, and two more wins on the upgrade lotto.

Thanks for the memories, EK. Nothing like going out in style

So your one and only opt up was SYD>MEL?

I would have said no to the upgrade so you get your "QF P1 & LTG and never had an op-up" thread :)

Yeah, haha - pretty ordinary IMHO.

I have had countless op-ups on SQ and AA both of whom I have flown frequently for decades, but this one was my first on QF.

Admittedly I have only been flying QANTAS for about 8 years and ~13,500 SCs

Whose ff program to you credit your EK flights to Skip? I believe Alaskan is a good one due to low taxes on award flights plus many different partner airlines like CX & QF etc as they're not in any alliance.

Doing that would reduce the chance of opups though. You would be best to be EK gold or plat I would have thought

I'm a QFF tragic. EK appear to treat QF members like their own, hence all the op-ups.:D

The trick is to pick a flight where J is pretty full and Y is overbooked to blazes.

Good luck with upgrades to the VERY pointy bit of the plane; we had ben promised upgrades many times, after seriously bad incidents and paying a fortune on Qantas flights but we always missed out because the CREW only likes to fly FIRST when re-positioning between cities. It is an absolute disgrace but their union is so strong, they pretty much control the airline. So, high-paying passengers sit behind the freeloading crews.
it is virtually impossible to book a Biz Class seat on points - even 12 months ahead. Makes Qantas less and less attractive.

Had an op up on QF15 last month, Y to Premium Economy on check in.

Unfortunately on the way back I was in 46K on the QF16 diverted to OOL :(

Both myself and my wife were upgraded from J to F MEL - AKL flying Emirates on a Qantas ticketed flight back in April. Was tempted to have a shower but took photos instead.

Op-up to business class on EK flight SIN-MEL in early August. Shame as I slept most of the flight and didn't get a chance to experience business class fully or the onboard lounge.

QR upgraded at boarding Y>J DOH>BKK during ramadan... Thanked my lucky stars - the amount of coughing and splattering going around while waiting for boarding was not enjoyable at all... A lot of people on their last legs.

Can you please do a trip report on Kabul

Sorry, Quickstatus, I missed this request
Trips to and from KBL were pretty similar. Probably the highlight was the endless security getting to the airport and on the plane.

Here's an old blog posting about the security on the way out. It's pretty much the same these days.
https://pineappleskip.wordpress.com/2013/03/26/flight-from-kabul-through-security-check-cent/

The main changes since then was that EK started flying to Kabul about 2013, using 345s, then when they got rid of their 345s they started using 343s.
They also started getting a reputation for cancelling mid flight DXB-KBL, i.e. turn around and go back to DXB.
In early 2016 they switched to new 773s, the CSM on my last flight out said they did this because the 343s kept going 'tech' and they were loath to have crew in KBL for more than the brief turnaround there.

The other change in my FIFO life was the opening of the new concourse D at DXB. I have posted a trip report here on that.

Thanks QF, now how long do I need to wait until the next one?

Monday 19 September 2016

MEL-SYD, 737 Service, oversold. Got to the J lounge and was handed a boarding card for 3C (again) with a smile and "we have a complementary upgrade for you there penegal".

NB - the flight actually went out with a few spare Y seats as it looked like we had a few no shows, and pax moves to other services. However row 4 and indeed the entire cabin were fully laden, so very glad for the bump.

Those days are over I think. Big thread on FT about changes to their op-up policy.
For reference I'm in revenue J tonight on a completely sold out DXB-SYD. I've been watching the loadings and seat maps for a week or two. It appears that all the F op-ups have been done but this little black duck is still in J.

Mind you that's no different to my usual op-up rate on
EK which currently stands at 0% :D
