Despite claiming to be the leader of the free world, and the world's greatest liberal democracy, the US has always had a troubling addiction to murder. Whether it is carried out by crazy people who managed to buy a gun, or by a thug in a uniform in the name of the people.
Just when I thought their slide into barbarism could not be accelerated, they have shocked even me.
Public executions. Not just for those who can physically attend, but live-streamed and televised.
Death as entertainment.
I have no sympathy with murderers. This isn't about them.
Capital punishment itself is abhorrent. It turns us all into murderers.
And for a supposedly Christian country, it is the ultimate hypocrisy.
But execution as a public spectacle is evil on a whole new level.
It is medieval: prisoners were once tortured and executed in the square in front of Notre Dame, for example.
But also it is reminiscent of Iran, the country which Trump & Hegseth have repeatedly threatened to obliterate.
How can the USA retain any pretence of moral superiority when it is becoming exactly the same as its enemies?
