The demise of Qantas international flights

Maybe not the Y+ option, but isn't this precisely what Qantas tried first with Australian Airlines (the ocre version!) and their all-Y 767 services ... which failed ... before looking at JQ?

Regards,

BD

Australian Airlines didn't fail. Australian was killed off because it was easier for Qantas to use Impulse to form Jetstar rather than expand Australian. So it was redundant. In many ways Qantas' experience with Australian is what has helped make Jetstar a success.

 Isn't that exactly what Qantas Group has done on MEL-BKK?

Sorry, I don't know. Has it? I wasn't aware of QF metal configured purely as Y+ and Y. I thought the only 2 class planes were J and Y.

He said Qantas group, meaning Jetstar. Jetstar exists to do EXACTLY what you suggested. Their lower costs mean a decent return can be made on the assett (read the aircrafy).

ajw373, I recall that about 15 to 20 years ago, QF tried to operate flights such as SIN - HKG and had a grand vision of using SIN as a hub. I don't remember how long these flights lasted.
...
Some examples: In 1998 QF71/QF72 used to operate PER-xSIN-xHKG-BKK and vv, QF31/QF31 were SYD-xCGK-SIN and QF5/QF6 operated SYD-xSIN-xBKK-FRA vv.

By 2000 only QF5/QF6 offered the SIN/BKK legs.

Except unlike JetStar, Australian Airlines had a great brand and the livery looked good.

Given my company's home is Kyoto I have never been happy since JAL stopped flying SYD - KIX with a QANTAS code share and gave the whole Aus -KIX route over to Jetstar. With JAL there was KIX lounge access but with Jetstar unless you buy Bussiness MAX no lounge access or SCs for you.

Ok, thank you for your input. Sometimes I wonder about airlines reasons for doing the things they do....

Given KUL's importance, will QF ever again fly to it, or has it long decided that with D7 and MH on the route, it could not make any money?

It's odd: QF flies to SIN, HKG, MNL, PVG and NRT and BKK but not to KUL.

QF had considered flying to KUL very seriously to tie in with MH's services around Asia. However, MH's financial situation and largely not being able to (as of yet) hammer out a commercial agreement that worked for both parties left them unable to operate. The original idea was to acquire A333s to fly SYD, BNE and MEL - KUL along with re-routing the now axed 2nd daily PER-SIN service to instead terminate in KUL and then also offer codeshares on the MH flights into KUL, they'd then offer connections from there but it never worked out.

IIRC Qantas was in talks with MH last year or the year before to have an Emirates style agreement but obviously this didn't work out and they now fly to Dubai not Kuala Lumpur. That being said, it would make sense for Qantas to fly to KUL, but that doesn't mean they'll necessarily do it..

QF had CNS/HKG/CNS for years, they gave it up, since them CX have been laughing all the way to the bank, flights usually full or near full and charging big time for the direct 7 hour flights, checked the other day was $1450, QF the long way CNS/SYD/HKG return $950

Did QF have the monopoly or were they always competing with CX? Perhaps there is enough demand to sustain only one carrier.
