The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Now it’s the WA flock’s turn to get growled at to get vaccinated or face the consequences…

Honestly it’s pretty simple problem to fix

Both QLD and WA governments need to take out their etcha-sketches and write an opening date on them (in about 6 weeks time) and put it on TV.

They need to create a sense of urgency. Either an outbreak (I still wake up half hoping…) or an opening date in concrete. Period.

WA's COVID Vaccine Commander sends warning to unvaccinated West Australians

WA's Vaccine Commander is warning the state cannot keep COVID-19 out forever, and that only seven out of 10 West Australians have had their first shot.

Chris Dawson was visiting Kalgoorlie-Boulder, which has one of the lowest vaccination rates, with just 58 per cent of people over 16 having had their first shot.

Just a week ago, Mr Dawson announced the milestone that 70 per cent of people aged over 16 in WA had received their first vaccination dose.

But the messaging has shifted away from celebrating the milestone to warning people of the consequences when the virus arrives.

At some point, people need to take a bit of responsibility for their own health. I appreciate that the US happy clappers have caused issues, but it’s not a great excuse in my book.

I could not agree more in principle and have posted many times to that effect.

I’m sure other people working on the front line though (more than me) can attest these people however are simply not motivated enough to get it done. Motivated in any way. (I’m leaving out the very hardcore anti vaxxers/religious nutters because they won’t budge unless significant financial pain. They are re a tiny minority anyway).

The governments where there are terrible vaccination rates have simply not created enough motivation or urgency. Still. Whiny lecturing on TV every morning and handing out sausages at hardware stores is going to achieve nothing.

They need opening dates cast in iron as a primary driver. And ideally some mandates (like VIC and NSW who went hard), some freedoms curbed (like VIC and NSW) and hopefully some no jab no play financial sticks.

Honestly it’s not hard

An opening date in QLD is only for the border, otherwise everything else is carrying on and if you're not living in the GC isn't a constant daily reminder.

At the end of the day we are due to hit 80% dd in 8 weeks, we come in a week or 2 or 3 earlier, the "she'll be right mate" attitude isn't going to change anytime soon.

What is the problem with First Nations getting vaxxed? Are they refusing the jab? Or they are so remote they have no place to get jabbed? Why aren't there vax vans going to these communities? And yes, show them the urgency. Borders will open on 1 Dec. Covid will get in. Protect yourself. The messaging needs to be stronger and make sure it is in their languages.

Indeed, so don’t go around pretending you are taking responsibility when in reality it’s a shared responsibility and in actuality much of the work ended up being done by the states.

Personally I suspect the minister for announcements was more than happy for people to only read the headline.
And you are supposing you know all the fine details which is unlikely.Someone in NSW Health requested the Commonwealth's help when covid jumped to the indigenous population in the Far West.A nurse vaccinator in the employ of the Commonwealth has ben stationed in Broken Hill for 3 months now solely vaccinating the indigenous population. She has been told she will be there until at least christmas.Often travels to indigenous communities such as Wilcannia. But also into South Australia.
Quite likely this is going on in other places.

And the problem is despite having the jab come to their door quite a few have been scared by the anti vaxxers. This is one area where Facebook,TW etc should be censoring the misinformation more comprehensibly.Government action will take too long.

There’s some logistics involved yes but in our experience it’s mostly lack of motivation which is because of vaccination hesitancy and the religious anti vaxxers movement has their hooks in them, exploiting their vulnerable status which is gut wrenching but very hard to unpick.

The opening of the border is basically an opening for an outbreak to commence which will then spread everywhere, which is why QLD needs to announce the date of reopening now to drive some urgency in the rollout to avoid literally flushing Pfizer down the toilet… (and to think we used to be only anti AZ up here… seriously).

Of course there could be an outbreak happening right now as well as I type this but people don’t seem to care about that possibility. So give them a certainty and they will grumble but inevitably haul cough and get jabbed.

Just need a government with some foresight… 😂

And a suggestion for QF,VA or Rex from NZ.

There literally are vans. The NT government spoke of visiting communities 6 separate times and many (in that particular community) refusing to get it. They've done it in their languages.

The degree of hesitancy is high in some of these communities. It's almost non existent in others.

The greatest successes seem to have come from community engagement, specifically when someone within the environment leads the conversation. Many of these communities are very suspicious of outsiders, particularly governments (perhaps not surprisingly). Unfortunately lack of trust in government and what many of us would regard as other trustworthy sources has meant many turning to alternate sources of information, somewhat a pattern for anti-government/establishment sentiment but strongly accentuated here.

I can't help but feeling the way to success here is to try and get community leaders on-board and then utilise their respect in the community to persuade others, but working with these leaders (as opposed to telling them what to do) has never traditionally been much of a strength in this country (and, to be fair, many others).

The implementation was always going to require collab with state health
Pointing fingers and fighting over who is responsible never worked anywhere

indigenous population which was the responsibility of the fed gov
Really?.
Then where is there a 10 year NSW Aboriginal health Plan 2013-2023 ?

occasionally politicians just do their jobs
Which in the Westminster system is to represent their electorate and not to hide behind unelected bureaucrats or "National Cabinets". Last I heard Parliament, has not convened - in a pandemic
Why aren't there vax vans going to these communities?
You can have all the vans in the world but if no one comes for a jab what do you do?
Vans turning up currently but very few wanting jabs.

Remember that the Aboriginal concept of health is a lot different to the orthodox. It was always going to be difficult and complex. Its no use some "white fella" going into communities offering jabs. It has to be grass roots by the locals for the locals. To that end if you really want to point a finger - point it at ACCHOS (and everyone else associated with Aboriginal Health). There are 140 of them around the place. Even then if Aboriginal health has been basically a failure (and a shame for the country), how do yo expect vax rates to suddenly be excellent?

This has nothing to do with a covid vaccine
It has everything to do with optimising health outcomes and provides a framework for doing so. Look..., panadol is not mentioned either, or any other specific treatment or vaccinations plans either - but that is not the point.

There are a lot of service providers involved in Aboriginal Health:
Local Health Districts
Primary Care Providers
Medicare Locals
Commonwealth
NSW Govt
Non Govt providers
Local Govt
ACCHOS

.....Not just the Feds...

To say that responsibility lie with the Feds is ignoring the complexity that is Aboriginal Health and is very damaging to health outcomes (including CovidVax outcomes) in this very difficult sector.

Yep, due to low vax rates in regional areas it’s been pushed back to November 1st

For the most part it must be said it’s not due vaccine hesitancy in the regions, the first jab rates are up around 90% in most areas, it’s the second jab rates which are lower, because vaccines were prioritised going into Sydney. Just a couple of weeks behind.
