The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

The quickest way to boost numbers is to open the hubs on weekends. Younger people dont want to miss paid work to get vaccinated when their risk of getting covid is virtually non existant.
What makes you think those same people will queue at mass vaccination hubs on their days off if there’s no risk of getting Covid?

I’m all for having the hubs/ GP//Respiratory Clinics open 7 days a week but I do not believe expanding the hours will make any significant dent in getting the unmotivated to attend.
Victoria had theirs open 7 days ages ago. It was only when the current outbreak started that they really ramped up their rates, particularly on the weekends.

Dropped hubby off for his first jab today at Sydney Olympic Park. We noticed people going in at 8.30am but the earliest appointment we could get was 10am.

Apparently the AZ shots start at 10am. Wonder why?

Because they are still doing frontline HCW/ Aged Care and others in 1A/1B and they will all have the first appointments reserved and be getting Pfizer.

So what message do we need to get the unmotivated vaccinated? There isn't one for younger people especially once older people have been vaccinated. Currently, it takes time, and potentially having some hopefully just mild side effects, so there is nothing compelling anyone else to be vaccinated. Too successful at flattening the curve creating donuts at all costs.

I wish I knew the answer to that.
I “motivated” my own young family members by booking their appointments myself and I’ll be driving them on a 4 hour round trip to get the vaccine but I’d imagine I’m an outlier here.

No domestic border closures once X % of population vaccinated?
Ability to home quarantine if you do leave Australia and return from a low risk country fully vaccinated?
Actually I don’t really know why we aren’t trialing this right now.
Currently we allow and trust known close contacts of positive cases to isolate at home but fully vaccinated travelers from say Singapore must be in a hotel for 14 days.
The risk matrix has changed and it’s time the Health Advice changed accordingly.

I think more younger ones will go on the weekend if it is by appointment only rather than queuing. Afterall who wants to queue 3-6 hours for just a jab when they can go out and party instead.

Ironically the best way to motivate people for a jab is to have some Covid in the community .....

Im and old fart but unmotivated for 2 reasons.

Firstly, because I feel there are so many others who need it before I do. Med staff, carers, elderly ect. Im happy in my tiny bubble with almost zero risk so feel others more deserving/greater need should be at the front of the line.

Secondly, I just do not want to have it. I dont do flu shots and I dont want this vaccine. I know I have free choice not to have it but I also know I need to do it for me, my family and the community so I will have my 1st one next week but Im not happy about it.

I'm still waiting for the ok from my oncologist and don't see her till end of July...but once she OKs I'm doing it. My husband is refusing to have it...only carrots and sticks are going to work for him and those like him. No real reason to not get it just doesn't want too... So no pubs...no domestic travel .. international travel

That is some serious dedications there. I admired that!

You have to do it twice too!

Care to run for PM or at least, their Covid Uptake Marketing Plan? I see nothing in it for others to have the vaccination from the current messaging from the Federal Government. I am not going political, but their messaging about the future has been appalling.

Nail on head. Time we started to move on as a nation.

Sadly, I fear we are in the minority here
The PM said the right things maybe 10 weeks ago, risks have changed, bad flu, opening up, but then switched 100% the other way, probably pollers telling his Jo and Jane Average Ozzie didn't like it.

Now he's Elimination COVID Zero all the way to election.

If and when he wins, international borders will open very quickly. He's locked in for another 3 years.

You are assuming the delays are all about the reluctant, whereas what Im hearing from a lot of people is how hard it is to get a Pfizer appointment due to limited hours.

The queue at Olympic Park moves pretty fast by all accounts, people have appointments, they arent walk ins. Anything that makes getting vaccinated easier/less of a hassle and doesn't come at the expense of paid work would be welcomed by many and weekends would help clear a lot of the backlog.

I helped a colleague (40-49) make their Pfizer appointment at Olympic Park this morning, nothing available until til mid August, yet they registered on the 40s list well before the Vic outbreak, got the invite yesterday. There is nothing timely at Olympic Park, adding weekends could help this. The other sites offered were Blacktown or St George (way too far for someone who lives in the CBD and doesnt have a car) - they really need to hurry up with opening RPA and St Vincent's to non 1a and 1b.

Another vaccination pop-up clinic in Victoria. This one focused on the disadvantaged in a higher risk setting..

Any public housing resident 16 or older can be vaccinated at it.

Note that it will vaccinate with both Pfizer and AZ. One again demonstrating that Pfizer does not have to be just vaccinated at the large hubs.
