The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Yeah, I agree they have stuffed up their relationship with the First Nations people full stop, but I’m not happy at the suggestion it’s their fault for lack of vaccination take up. Not that I’m suggesting you are explicitly saying that but it does seem implicit in some of the narrative.
I am not for one second laying any part of the blame, at all, at the feet of the indigenous community.

Another company tendering for the new mRNA production facility, all bidders are in Melbourne given the concentration of relevant expertise in Victoria. CSL wants to produce in inner city Melbourne then build industrial production facilities near the airport. This company will produce near Monash.

Australian company offers rival bid to produce mRNA vaccines in Victoria from 2023

A Melbourne company has told the federal government it could deliver 100 million mRNA vaccines from early 2023 by expanding an existing production line in a bid that rivals a plan from CSL.

Biotech company IDT has put forward a proposal to start production within 18 months and offer population-wide inoculation against COVID-19 and its variants in a project backed by scientists and industry.

In SA here and Sydney and NSW has a desperate need. Last year, if there was a vaccine back then, I'd be ok with it going to Victoria. Is this a case of interpreting something as a rivalry rather than a need? Sorry, I've never understood this concern.

The religious ones especially

You cant reason with the religious, the whole premise of religious belief requires suspension of rational thought and evidence to take a leap of faith.

Disappointing that ABC's response didnt mention that the severity of the current outbreak was the primaryreason Poland agreed to sell to Australia rather than someone else. Given NSW situation was used to justify the need for extra doses, it would have been dishonest to then distribute them to jurisdictions with less urgent need, and hurt future negotiations.

I don't think any reasonable person does not think that it is reasonable to have more than pro-rata doses in NSW at present. I certainly support it. And with the more pro-rata of the "brought-forward" doses of what had already been bought, and the even greater share of the Polish Purchase this is occurring.

Certainly both the Vic Health Minister and Premier have acknowledged the need. That however dose not stop them from calling on the Commonwealth to secure more doses (ie other Polish type deals, or getting Pfizer and Moderna to supply quicker)

People did however object to the call by Gladys to send all the Pfizer to NSW, and morseo due to her public stance on reallocations just the month prior.

Delta can pop up anywhere and vaccinations still need to progress everywhere. Especially as it takes time to vaccinate, and for the vaccines to start protecting.

This straddles both threads I guess - as this will be a big boost to the vaccine roll out and hopefully more and more companies follow shortly.

Need Coles, Woolies, Bunnings to do this.

At the very least, VA2 and Rexy will be forced to because it’s a massive competitive disadvantage to have your competitor flying around with vaccinated staff and you look like a disease carrying bus!

QANTAS GROUP TO REQUIRE EMPLOYEES TO BE VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19

The Qantas Group will require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as part of the national carrier’s commitment to safety.

Frontline employees – including cabin crew, pilots and airport workers – will need to be fully vaccinated by 15 November 2021.

We're now vaccinating at 1.5M doses a week, more than the original plan of 1M per week and more per capita that the UK ever did.

Within a few weeks we will have reached the point where supply is no longer the problem and the limitation is delivery.

Focus needs to stop harping on about the Federal Government and start looking at states like WA and QLD who are well behind the rest of the country. One would argue if we didn't demonise AZ in the first place we never would have had a rollout problem.

Indeed. Pharmacists have always had to capability to inject a huge number AZ doses per day (and need very little time to get up and running as are already proven vaccinators) and so the ability to vaccinate large numbers of people was never a real limitation.

I said ages back not using AZ would be the biggest mistake of the vaccination rollout. Sadly that is now so.

The flaw was allowing risk to be based on individual risk on the current day , rather than risk to the whole of community over the whole of the pandemic. Other outbreaks were always going happen.

Even allowing for the initial hesitation on AZ, once it was seen Delta was rife in places like India we should have gone full throttle with AZ. Instead we just started exporting it overseas so that it would not go to waste.

So AZ is now being used much higher in some jurisdictions. Sadly plenty of people are still waiting Pfizer/Moderna.

Unfortunately the marketing campaigns and messaging strategies allowed the negative publicity to occur.

It really only took an outbreak for people to essentially ignore the marketing and simply go get vaccinated.

Great, now apply it to passengers.

Considering how easy it is to get vaccinated we should be requiring at least one dose now for 18+ with a plan to require fully vaccinated before the end of the year.

Just like to point out that on a per capita basis Canberra’s figures are now approaching Sydney’s. Hope that will reverse soon.

we are fortunate that our vaccination rates are already high, apart from under 40s. The numbers are coming predominantly from the 20s and younger. Lots of school kids affected and a number of 14 year olds, who of course are not eligible yet, unless underlying conditions.

AJ has already said they will likely do just that for international PAX... and I don't expect domestic will be far behind. They may need to wait until there is a greater chance for the general population to have been vaccinated, in line with govt targets. Extending to JQ may be a bigger issue, given the segment and destinations served; I presume though that the frontline staff policy extends to group, and not just QF mainline?

There is some risk of backlash for QF, but if their frontline staff are required to, and given we have >80% percent of the population saying they want to, or are willing to be vaccinated, that's one heck of a market share guarantee, particularly if their competitors don't force a similar position. I would happily pay a premium for the knowledge that no-one on my flight who could be, remained unvaccinated. It would also play well into the 'safest airline' pitch for QF.

Cheers,
Matt.

Yes the numbers are piling up but the vac rate is good.

Not that it’s is really Qantas’ responsibility but in the absence of government action, if I were in AJ’s shoes, I’d be setting a date for passengers sometime in November. Hardly anyone is travelling right now and it would encourage anyone planning to travel before Christmas to get off their cough and get vaxxed. The good PR will outweigh the bad.
