The BER debacle continues

Bloody amazing breath taking stuff !

The Germans have lost it well and truly long live Tegel!

I think they are going to start from scratch

Amusing to think I had a flight booked into BER for November 2012. It'll be lucky to open by 2022 at this stage.

SXF uses the same airfield as BER. The SXF terminal is to the north of the runways.
They closed the northern most runway during construction of BER, extended the current north runway (current 07L/25R), and built a new runway (07R/25L) to the south. The BER terminal is between the two runways. I'm not sure if 07R/25L is open for SXF traffic.

With all the problems that building has, they might as well just knock it down and start over. Assuming the government renews the building permit. It appears the permit they have expires today.

Initially they were not using the new southern runway, but I believe that all aircraft started using it earlier this year while they did repair work on the existing runway.

The new ATC tower has already been in use for over a year.

It sounds like they should knock down the newish BER terminal and start over, hopefully with better planning and no problems this time. Then once open, move the full service carriers over to BER and LCCs at TXL while they knock down the SXF buildings and then build a 2nd terminal for BER.

Although if there is one positive from this, it is much more likely they will keep TXL open permanently. I'd be sad to see it close and many cities manage well with the old airport remaining for regional flights. It's a good airport, just far too many passengers and no development with its expected closure... any year now.

It's always weird to read about this travesty in my former hometown from down here. I always had a soft spot for Tegel though so I can see something positive in it all. Would be nice if they RENOVATED it though, it certainly shows its age!

Careful. They hardly need any more reasons to delay!

I just can't believe what is going on there. I understand there are defects to sort out but the time taken is astonishing.

Having now flown into Scholefeld and out of Tegel, I can safely say that a new modern airport is needed and it is sad that it will not happen for years to come (and probably not even in 2021 if history is anything to go by).

I could certainly see Schonefeld remaining open for LCC services, but I never ever want to fly into that airport again in my life. Having flown out of Tegel on an airline that existed only a few months ago, the experience wasn't much better, but at least there was a lounge.

It's certainly interesting to think that €4 billion have been spent on the airport that could have gone into other improvements around the city...

"Lounge" is a strong word for the offerings at TXL. ;) Especially for an airport that used to be a oneworld hub.

If only BER would hurry up and open!!

That might be possible. BER and SXF use the same airfield.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I was talking about the Air France lounge (that I was somehow able to use) and the BA lounge. The shed I eventually ended up in was not enjoyable and didn't leave me wanting to every fly AB again.
