The "Actual" Top 100 places to see before you die!

I'd settle for just one - a round of golf at Augusta National.
Can't see it ever happening, unfortunately (doesn't have reciprocal playing rights with Royal Hobart).

Places I've been:

1. Harbin in January. As awesome as it looks on the TV. The whole city becomes a winter wonderland.
2. Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland. Pretty spectacular, if a little cold.
3. Berlin. The epicentre of 20th century geopolitical history. Now with Ostalgie-chic.

Places I want to go to:

1. Restaurant car, Trans Siberian Railway.
2. Petra, Jordan.
3. Pyongyang.

Places i've been
1. Macchu Picchu
2. Hagia Sophia/Blue Mosque - Istanbul
3. Jerusalem Old City

Honourable mentions - Rome, Paris, Victoria Falls, Florence, Berlin, Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Iguassu Falls, Grand Canyon, Pyramids, Meteora, Athens (ok i better stop!!) :)

Wanting to go:
1. Petra
2. Taj Mahal
3. Great Wall of China
4. Ngorongoro Crater/Seren Geti/Mt Kilimajaro - Tanzania
5. Aurora Borealis

I think you all need to look beyond the simple ¨where¨, and contemplate the ¨how¨. Have been to Macchu Pichu, and it was good, but a mate and I plan to return there in style. There is a 4 day trek you can do which culminates in the grand entrance to the Macchu site at dawn via the Sun Gate. Sounds OK, but we plan to do that trek sitting in people-borne carriages like the ancients used to do. Carried by maidens in native bikinis. That is something to aim for.

Oooooohhh, that sounds MUCH NICER than the train I went on :p.

Been to a good proportion of what's been listed.

It's hard, but probably top 3 (as in exceeded expectations) been to:

Grand Canyon
Macchu Picchu
Yellowstone NP

On bucket list:

Kimberley coast cruise (coming up in 2.5 weeks - woo hoo!).
Gorillas in Rwanda
Antarctica

Pretty cool thread :)

1. Santorini, Greek Islands, for the world's best sunsets.
2. Venice, Italy ..... the canals, pretty cool :)
3. Pamplona, Spain, for the annual Bull Run* (we went in 2010 and it was the best time of our lives, also it was World Cup 2010 semi final where Spain def. Germany 1-0 and the little Spanish town went wild).

* rightly or wrongly about the cruelty to the bulls, it was loads of fun regardless.

Masai Mara
Canadian Rockies
Soweto

...no I'm not being a smarta*#e with Soweto. It was the late 90's when I was there and it is an extraordinary place. Beautiful homes next to hundreds of shacks made from discarded rubbish. A constant reminder of human kind's failings and but also a demonstration of hope.

Hard for me to narrow it down to three without duplicating anything, but of the places I've been:

1. Havana, Cuba - amazing Spanish architecture (mostly falling apart), truly excellent mojitos and music everywhere. Get in before it changes too much more!

2. Rosslyn Chapel, Scotland - incredibly detailed stonework; spent an hour there and could have easily spent longer. Sadly, photography is no longer allowed inside the chapel. Was used in the filming of the Da Vinci Code.

3. Highway 1 / Hearst Castle, California, United States - truly breathtaking drive and the castle is phenomenal. There are several tours of the castle - do as many as you can!

Places seen:

Alaska Coast from ship -white mountains rising 15000 feet from the sea...awesome
Mt Cook (NZ) rising into the sky from 40 km at other end of Lake Pukaki
The Caldera at Santorini from my hotel room balcony...so blue and breathtaking

To see:

Antarctica...followed by numerous others.

Don't fret - the S Africa Lonely Planet guide puts Soweto down as a must-do.

I have a facebook app which is the "top 100 places etc..."

This got me thinking as to the makeup of the list. Here on AFF we have touched on this before, but what I would like to do is compile a real travellers (collective) top 100 places to see before you die.

I would like to ask the AFF community to nominate 3 (only 3 please) places that should be on the T100 and your reasons why. Please feel free to nominate somewhere that's already nominated - this will allow the list to be ordered.

Can I impose one rule please - if you feel the need to bag anyone's post, flame them for their choice or anything else similar, go to the playground and open a new thread, don't do it here. Let's see if we can keep on topic

thanks

A lot of places that I would like to go to.

I guess the top of my long list would have to be places I'd love to re-visit before I croak. I must say it's going to be much harder afterwards that's for sure.

1. Lord Howe Island
2. Petra, Jordan
3. Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori) Uganda

Of my not yet visited list
1. Angkor Wat
2. Yucatan (pyramids)
3. Iguassu Falls (although Vic Falls in full flood I'd see again)

Top 3 of where I've been:
1. Antarctica
2. North Korea
3. Ice Hotel (Sweden)

My top 3 to do:
1. Ecuador
2. Easter Island
3. Monkey Mia

Thanks for the list. We intend to do a "gap year" in 2014 and see as much as we can. Picking up some ideas here.

Wow, N Korea - tell us more!

Easter Island - interesting but allow only about two nights. It can be included in a DONEx in and out of Santiago as it's considered part of domestic S America.

Monkey Mia - cool. Make sure you stop to kick the shells at the shell beach on the drive in - it's stunning.

Well since you asked:
google north korea travelogue bakker (I'm not allowed to post links yet)
(sorry about the photo quality)
I can recommend NK, it's unlike anywhere else (except perhaps 1950s Russia).

Thanks for the tips on Monkey Mia and Easter Island.
Please keep those top 3s coming!

cheers

3 of my dream destinations/trips

1) Palau: kayaking around the rock islands and snorkelling jellyfish lake
2) Antarctica- nature cruise via Maquarie Island
3) Trans-Siberian railway

 are you reading my future bookings? I'm doing all 3 within the next 8 months!

On topic ...
1/ Tallinn, Estonia.
2/ Luang Prabang, Laos
3/ Palau Tioman, Malaysia

My first post..ok here goes - and bear in mind I've been to these places:
1) Leptis Magna - bout 100

..as I was saying...
1) Leptis Magna - 'bout 100km east of Tripoli (the one in Libya). Google it.. not too many know it exists.
2) Petra, south of Amman in Jordan - the sight of the Treasury as one rounds the bend at the bottom of a 1km descent, unforgettable.
3) My old business friend's apartment in Tehran, where he'll bring you black market caviar, taken that day from a sturgeon in The Caspian, and served with butter and chopped onions on his wife's unbelievably fantastic, home made bread. Anyone going to Tehran - yeah, I know, I know - but introductions guaranteed...

And re the pyramids, they're not all the same, as I'm sure many know - you go inside one, and you descend. You go in another, and you go up.

Cheers, beers to all...
