wondering what other people's thoughts are on using credit cards in taxis - i.e. whether you pay the extra 10% for the benefit of using a c/c - whether this be for points, 'free' credit for your statement period, don't carry cash, using corporate cards instead of reimbursements etc.

i'm guessing at 10c/point, most people must have other reasons for using the plastic...

Thats where they have you... think about a airport-city run in most cities where it's 40-50 bucks. I certainly don't carry much cash with me and it's much easier to whip out the card(also for accounting purposes too). So... we pay the 10% extortion fee.

Personally I can't wait for a government body to **** up companies who have massive credit card fees like that.

I don't do 10% as that is ridiculous.
100% correct cove - bordering on criminal

100% correct - I NEVER use cash - NEVER - yes I know 10% ridiculous but I only care about total ave cost/ff pt over a 12mth period - CC spend on taxis not huge for me - but simplifies things immensely for accounting reconciliations.

Personally I am praying to see the day Cab Charge has it's guts ripped out - hope I live to see it.

I mostly use the limo services in each State but if it is a cabcharge taxi I get the receipts and get work to pay the business ones back monthly.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I've found it common for taxis to use hand held EFTPOS machines and ignore the Cab Charge unit mounted in the car. In fact I think that way is more common than using the official cab charge ones. Of course they still add 10%.

I use CC 95% of the time as it forces the money to be recorded somewhere, ie. Dodgy drivers can't just pocket the cash and cancel the meter, essentially ripping us off and the tax man.
Yes it is 10% more expensive, but I have piece of mind that these mostly corrupt drivers (Not all of them) will still have to pay tax and still have to pay the taxi company their respective fees and forces them to think that the public are aware of their rorts.

Unfortunately it is a necessary evil.

I have gone to RSL two weeks in a row and gave all my money to charity as I was in such a good mood. Had no choice but to use credit card for taxi at 4:00am-6:00am going back home....

I seem to recall many, many tales of people getting their card details skimmed when using a CC in a taxi (specifically in MEL if I recall correctly?) so I've never used one.

Mind you, I use them once or twice per year so not really a typically story.

Totally agree, the taxi owners cartel could teach organised crime how to maintain a racket. Sadly state governments of both persuasions are too gutless to address this scam.

I am not going to pay a 10% premium to keep a tiny proportion of people potentially partially honest...

I don't think it is necessary - I would be happy paying cash for corporate taxis and claiming that back subsequently but I am not allowed to - I have to use the corporate card.

Personally when I travel for personal trips I pay cash.

This is not the only reason actually main reason is fares are unpredictable sometimes and I don't have time to find an ATM most times so card is more convenient.

I use :
Perth. Quicksilver. 1 300 570 747
Melbourne. Bill. 0419 892349
Sydney. Chris. 0412 818515

All are very good.

For MrToads wild ride I go for the sub continent drivers.

Totally understand and that is exactly what I would have done had I not donated all my cash to charity that night.

Pretty sure it is really an 11% slug as it is 10%+GST.
Certainly when paying by credit card. However, it's 10% if paying by cabcharge.
Interestingly, there is NO GST payable on a cabcharge 10% fee; the government treat it like any other bank fee.

It a dubious practice when a CC company charges 11%.
There's a bit more from a discussion on this topic here on AFF: actual cab fare charged to your credit card account? (Read how the thread unfolds).
