No booking is made or finalised, nor are points deducted until after you enter your credit card details. It will tell you how much the Taxes etc are before then. It's quite safe, just do not enter your CC details.
I did this today and you wouldn't believe what happened.

The taxes and charges for the award ticket were $329.51. The exact amount calculated bu the great man himslef, NM. :shock: I am amazed yet again. :?
 
To the person who posted the taxes on a Syd-Lax-Syd flight, my Mel-Lax-Mel award tickets (two adult tickets booked on 1st Jan 2005 for 2 x 80,000 points) had a total tax amount of $319.24.

That means AU$159.62 in taxes to fly to the United states and return per person.

I am amazed at how much we have been affected by the oil prices and I cannot see Qantas dropping the prices in the near future.

I'm just happy to get the cheap tickets. :)

At the current time Taxes/Levies/Charges for MEL-LAX are about AUD177 and AUD120 LAX-MEL.

So with the Fuel Levies, which weren't about on Jan 1st (IIRC), and other minor variances it is now ~AUD298 pp.

Five weeks ago I booked an award for March, LAX-SYD-MEL. When doing routing variations and test bookings for on a Sunday evening the taxes etc for LAX-xSYD-MEL came out at ~USD105.

Anyway when I came to do the booking the next day, it came out at US$45 :?

Needless to say I booked it on the Spot! :D

While I have been conentrating on the taxes and charges component the SIN-BNE-SYD option is no longer available as an award seat on the 21st April. And here I was praising Qantas for more award seats availability.

Another gripe is DRW-SIN-SYD taxes for award seat come to ~$255. This seems to be a little high. :shock:

Sound about ball-park to me.
:oops: I know the amount is right, NM. It just seems a little high.

I should have included that the rise in fuel tax (YQ?) has added considerably to taxes and charges. 6 months ago SYD-BNE-SIN-SYD taxes and charges were just ~$200 and now for same trip ~$287. That's a pretty significant increase. Not sure what they were for DRW-SIN-SYD but I would imagine a significant increase there as well.
 
Booked a return flight ADL-PLO for February and the price is $132.04 which is made up of $44 airfare and $88.04 taxes & charges.

Is QF the only airline in the world which has such a high proportion of taxes & charges that make up an airfare?

Does anyone know of any airlines outside Australia that have this sort of airfare breakdown?

How's these for some examples:

Gatwick-Manchester (return) with BA: £57.40

Fare per person: £ 13.00
plus taxes, fees, charges and surcharges* per person: £ 44.40


LHR-DUB (return) with EI: £39.25
Fare per person: £ 2.00
plus taxes & charges: £33.75
Handling Fee: £ 3.50
