TAP Air A320 Engine Failure.

The fee will range between 25% and 33%. You can do it yourself. I would. But you may find it much easier just to hand it to a claims company. That's a one stop, set and forget. No need to have emails back and forth with the airline, Or to have to argue your case.

The claims companies are very good. They can tell you pretty much instantly if your claim is valid. If it's not, they won't take it.

I'd say in your case it's fairly straight forward. But that doesn't mean TAP won't try and fight it.
Just an update.

I had bought the tickets from the Dutch based Budgetair.com.au

Today I got an email from them saying they were sorry to hear of my delayed flight, and that I may be able to to claim 400 Euro compensation. They recommended I go through their partner AirHelp.com.

Which was what you've been saying, of course.

I just found it interesting that an organization would be recommending this, given that they sell that airline's tickets.
Cheers,
Renato

lol. I wonder if budgetair has some sort of affiliation with airhelp? so maybe they get a commission for recommending them (as a passenger you could either do it yourself, or do it through any of the other companies that offer the service. So maybe they want to get you first?)

Looks that way. Or maybe they are just very customer focused? They have certainly been very responsive to my questions regarding these flights and a Philippine Airlines flight I bought through them earlier this year.

Given how things subsequently turned out, I'd have been doubly annoyed had I bought the TunisAir and Tap Air tickets directly from their websites and paid full price, rather than getting the nice discounted prices on both by using BudgetAir.com.au.

Update.
Airhelp have now lodged my claim with TAP.

If successful, their fee will be 35 percent.

You say "low speed", but that is what has my wife and I puzzled about the video. It looks as if the plane is just meandering along and the engine blows.

But from inside the plane, it was going fast speed, engines were straining, and plane beginning to shake as it always does just before the wheels leave the ground.

Renato
AV is correct. That’s a low speed (very low) abort. Perhaps 20 knots. The engines most likely never even reached their take off setting (the other engine anyway, I’m sure the left one didn’t).

Low speed aborts can be quite exciting, especially in four engined aircraft if you lose an outboard. The swing is extremely rapid, as you aren’t going fast enough for the tail to have any countering aerodynamic effect, and if moving at about 40 or so knots, you’re going fast enough to reach the edge of the runway in just a few seconds if you’re not quick with corrective actions. At higher speeds, once the rudder is truly effective, you can counter the swing, even without pulling the power back to idle on the other engines. The lowest speed at which you have such control is called Vmcg. Velocity, minimum control ground. An equivalent speed also exists in flight (Vmca).

Thanks for all that info. But from the acceleration inside the plane, it felt like we should have been going faster than 20 knots. I guess acceleration alone may be deceptive for people used to cars.

I asked a relative who's a Qantas pilot about this. He said it's never happened to him, but that it wouldn't be a big deal for a properly trained pilot.

Yeah. That percentage cut seems on the upper side - more than the upper level of 33% I have seen with some companies. This is perhaps why your travel agent was plugging that particular company?

It could well be. On the other hand it may just be the biggest operator - or biggest spending operator - as it was the first one/ first paid ad to come up in my initial Google search.

Update on our claim against TAP.

Claim lodged by AirHelp on 19 Sep 2019.
Claim rejected by TAP on 26 Feb 2020.
AirHelp now taking TAP to court in Italy.

Which activates the legal fee of 120 Euro.

So, should we win, we would get -
800 Euros, less AirHelp fee of 280 Euros, less legal fee of 120 Euro = 400 Euro.

Renato
