This video is very interesting

My wife and I were sitting just back from the engine. My wife in the window seat heard two little bangs, then the really big bang that we all heard, then she saw fire and smoke from the engine. The pilot braked hard. My wife smelled something sooty.

Some passengers stood up in fear, but I was reassured when they told us to remain seated, rather than to get the hell out of there.

Result was a four hour delay. I kept checking my phone for lounge passes from MasterCard Flight Delay. But they didn't come, and I flicked off the phone when we boarded again. I flicked on the phone in Italy at 4am, and the lounge passes had arrived - valid for two more days.

Odd thing was, we had been put on a bus to the plane for a 10 or 12 minute drive, and when we got there, we stood in the bus for some time, till a lady came and told us they had a problem with cleaning the plane, and sent the bus back to the terminal, where we waited a few minutes in the bus, and we're then driven back to the plane again. And then had sat there for over half an hour before taking off.

What a coincidence. Cleaning problem and engine problem on same plane.
Cheers,
Renato

P.S. - On the subsequent flight, we were served a light meal, which consisted of a cous cous wrap and some cheese and crackers. I was so hungry by that time, that I actually ate half the wrap. My wife managed a third of hers.

Who dreams up these ridiculous "meals"?

Just a side note about being bussed to the plane at Lis....in April we were being bussed to our TAP flight to PDL and the bus driver got lost. ...he had to stop several times to get directions to our plane. I guess all the TAP A320s look the same!

It was easy for our bus driver to find the plane - it wasn't with the other TAP planes, but much further away, with the Ryanair and EasyJet planes.

Renato

Can you expand a little more on how this worked out for you. I never bothered to enact the Mastercard offer as they ask too many details and takes two hours to kick in. Did they meet that goal and get you your passes? Were you able to use the passes in Italy?

you might need to explain why you think that meal was not a suitable? Sounds fine for me for an economy class refreshment.

You will be able to apply for EU261 compensation for the delay of four hours.

They say on their website that they send the passes when notified by a third party. Flight was due to leave at 3.45 pm. After incident, notification was that flight was due to leave at 5pm. Which they later changed to 6.15 then 7.15pm.

So I suspect MasterCard wasn't notified in a timely fashion. Passes were only valid for three lounges at Lisbon.

Renato

Cous cous only occupies a tiny piece of shelf space in supermarkets - which reflects in general how much the population generally likes eating it.

My wife and I dislike it a lot. Plus my wife's wrap was nearly rock hard, while mine was tender. She felt ill in her stomach next two days.

Renato

28 Degrees is a member of the lounge program which gives you lounge access if your flight is delayed by two or more hours, and you are leaving from an airport that has a pay-in lounge. You are issued with a free entry electronically. A two hour delay is a fair time before such a generous benefit kicks in I think.

In the OP's case, the flight would have shown as departed. So understandable there was a significant time before MC would have even been aware that this flight was rescheduled and then delayed.

Good point, thanks.

Sounds like between this and Tunis Air you are having quite and adventurous trip!! Maybe you should tell us your next series of flights so we can all ensure we avoid them....:p

This was a band 2 flight for EU261 purposes - greater than 1500km (1193 miles). you'll be eligible for 400 euros per person for this (AUD670)

Upthread Renato mentioned flight was originally due to depart at 3:45pm but eventually rescheduled several times to 7:15pm. That wouldn’t meet the 4hr requirement.

Yes, twice spending over 10 hours in total to complete 2.5 hour flight time trips was most tiresome.

Next trip will be with Qatar, Venice to Doha on 28 Oct. Then back to Melbourne two days later.

Should be okay......I hope.
Cheers,
Renato.

Fascinating, thanks.

I've just been Googling this, and notice some companies willing to do the claim for people for a fee (though I can't find the actual fee in the terms and conditions of one called AirHelp). I'd have to wait till I get home to do it myself.

Renato

The fee will range between 25% and 33%. You can do it yourself. I would. But you may find it much easier just to hand it to a claims company. That's a one stop, set and forget. No need to have emails back and forth with the airline, Or to have to argue your case.

The claims companies are very good. They can tell you pretty much instantly if your claim is valid. If it's not, they won't take it.

I'd say in your case it's fairly straight forward. But that doesn't mean TAP won't try and fight it.

Not sure what happened here but could be a high pressure inside the engine as shown in the first picture with the pressure relief door open and the crumpling of the tail pipe. Good job on the pilot for a great reject. That's one of the hardest situations in which to reject. High thrust, low speed and lots of swing.

Thanks very much for that. Much appreciated.

I told my wife about this. She said I should claim the money from them for scaring the s##t out of her.

You say "low speed", but that is what has my wife and I puzzled about the video. It looks as if the plane is just meandering along and the engine blows.

But from inside the plane, it was going fast speed, engines were straining, and plane beginning to shake as it always does just before the wheels leave the ground.

Renato
