Being a savy 21 year old and joining this community you should know that there is a cheaper way of getting the benefits of QP membership. If you are planning to travel to make use of the QP then you could make SG or AA Plat which gives you the benefits. If you keep up your travels then you can maintain such benefits and your investment will not be gain a good return. If you cnanot make the status levels then the investment in QP may not be worth it in the first place.
Why not get a 1 year membership go for SG or AA Plat and invest the difference in "entertainment", travel and investment?

Well not really - as stated before, my travels generally are domestic, and economy class - so while the status credits do add up, they add up nowhere near as fast as someone flying business all the time. It is enough flying to warrant an investment in use of the QP, but not enough flying (status credits wise) to be hitting the Gold each year, and thus get for free.

There is another way of course, but may be the most expensive in the long run - have a partner with the right status.

So are you advocating the investment in the "high maintenance chicks"?:D
For me I do not get enough SC for SG either but I did not invest in the Lifetime option as I do not think I will be travelling enough in the future, when the family comes along, to make use of it. Of course at the moment without the family and under my current contract I do get to travel a bit in mostly WHY enough for me to justify the current membership.
Oh Flashware please also look at the thread regarding tax deductability of Lifetime membership....I am too busy to search for it....

I already had a chat to my Accountant before I did it.. and just before the thread popped up, too! As has been mentioned, the ATO made a ruling on life memberships to be written off over a period of 10 years.

Flashware you are obviously a fellow with old fashioned common sense.Obviously you did your homework.
For those that mentioned share investments -not only did I invest in the QP life membership but also in CBA and Cochlear shares and a few others that were even better. That is why I can now fly business class on our trips but can still go for the more economic options such as JAL to the states not having to worry about keeping up status as I have my QP membership as a backup particularly in the USA.
Well done and great success to you in the future.

Flashware, I think you have an old head on young shoulders. I'm sure you already know to take some comments with a grain of salt ;) .

Good for you on the investment in Lifetime QP membership - I wish I had done it as young (although at 21 I did buy my first house). Where your travelling is taking you (within Australia), it certainly makes sense and easy to write it off over the next 10 years' tax returns.

Thank you all for your kind words - I'm sending this reply right now from the QP lounge in Perth :)
