Are you sure?

I thought it was a OW 'privilege'

Serfty knows this stuff

Yes, they would for a flight the next day. It has to do with the ticket rather than any alliance. You could be connecting to AC or UA off a QF flight and as long as they are ticketed together, you will be accommodated.

As long as it is on one ticket then AA will put you on the next plane to the destination.

All IATA airlines have to protect misconnected passengers when the misconnected flights are on the one ticket. This is not the general case if the misconnected flights are on separate tickets.

However, due to a oneworld "Endorsement Waiver Agreement" AA would indeed protect you even on separate tickets as long as the ticketed stock is all of oneworld carriers!

See here:
...

AA have a documented policy relating to oneworld mis-connections on separate tickets...

oneworld - Separate Tickets

...
AA to/from AA or a oneworld® Carrier

If a customer is holding separate tickets on AA or another oneworld carrier, customers holding separate tickets where travel is on oneworld airlines should be treated as through ticketed passengers. In the event of a disruption on the originating ticket, the carrier responsible for the disruption will be required to reroute the customer to their final destination. The ticket stock of the second ticket must be of a oneworld carrier, eligible under the Endorsement Waiver Agreement. You may contact AA Reservations 1-800-433-7300 (U.S. and Canada) or outside the U.S. and Canada, reference Worldwide Reservations Numbers for additional information if the separate ticket is for travel on a oneworld carrier.

Depends if wanting to maximise status credits or ease of travel, and also which class you are flying. If travelling business transfer to American code share and you travel first, instant upgrade of status miles. If coach, then stay with qantas as for ease as stated earlier, they will hold planes via lax, which each time I have travelled through I loathe even more each time I pass through there.

just my humble opinion

I did QF107 through to NYC in Dec last year. LAX was not too bad when our flight landed - didn't seem to be too many other flights arriving at that time. As others have said, the LAX-NYC leg was pretty empty. QF is much better than US airlines, and you won't miss your connection even if the flight into LAX is late. And you will get into NYC in daylight. I'd go QF107.

Does anyone know if the seats 60HJK have extra legroom (Refurbished 747)? I believe they a behind a gallery.

Just getting back to the original question, I have travelled SYD to US West Coast then onward to US East Coast many times over the past 20 years. The AA trans-US flights have got worse over the years and now seem to me like a basic bus ride in terms of seat, service, food. QF trans-US has better seat, service and food and likely to be lighter loaded.

Accordingly, suggest QF all the way to JFK if comparing AA and QF.

Now that QF codeshares with Emirates do check that they are all QF planes as I understand that QF are 3 -3 -3 across in Y and Emirates are 3 -4 - 3 across and maybe a bit squashier! JoyV

Not on QF107 while it's a 747... PE is 2-4-2 and Y is 3-4-3 except for rows 69 back where it's 2-4-2

Thanks for that info. One has to be ever vigilant while carriers maximise their profit margin.

I could not agree more. If you take the AA flight from LAX or even Dallas you are going to have a very disappointing final leg of your journey. AA food and service bears no comparison with Qantas, especially in Y. From my experience, LAX is not the greatest experience but not the worst. The tip is to make sure you are in a forward row seat so you can exit as soon as possible, walk briskly to the immigration so that you do not have to stand at the end of the large queue. Once you are through immigration - just make sure you are aware you are heading - and if in doubt ask. I think you will have to go through security screening again so plan to have minimal hand luggage or distracting items such as metal belts and laced up boots.

I read this thread in planning my trip and procrastinated a lot before choosing SYD-JFK, mainly for better arrival time and to avoid the AA offering. I must agree with Cabbage that there is no better feeling (at least in flying terms) of cruising over Manhattan and landing at JFK on your home airline.

Surprisingly, the LAX customs and immigration were a breeze. Very short queues. The only downside was the need to wait on the inbound flight for 25 minutes until the 6.30am US Border Control opening time - not allowed to open the plane doors until this time. Loads were light on all flights.

A colleague of mine just did SYD-DXB-JFK. Not sure why but seemed to work well.
