A quick question for those that have travelled these or similar sectors.

Am going to book a SYD to Beijing (Capital Apt) however the flights Qantas returns seem very close when transferring IN Honk Kong.

Do you not need to clear customs/immigration in Honk Kong?

Looking at QF127 which gets in at 17:45 then the next flight (on same booking of course) is KA906 leaving at 19:00.

The flight departure time in Sydney and arrival into Beijing suit us perfectly so would prefer this option rather than other flight combinations that QF offer. Plus we have an extra person just doing the SYD-HKG sector which rules out going via Shanghai or any other airport.

Thanks

You should simply be able to transit (using the Transfer Security).

If all flights are on the one PNR you would be protected in the case of a misconnect.

Thanks, I knew there would be protection with all flights being on the same booking (PNR), I was just assuming customs and immigration would have to be dealt with in HKG

HKG is a fairly easy airport to transfer at. CX offers 55 minute connections and from previous experience they can be made fairly easily, so 75 mins should be ok if all is well.

Hi file51

Having just done SYD-HKG-PVG (Shanghai), you don't need to clear customs \ immi in HK, custom \ immi for HK are very different for customs \ immi for mainland China. Different visa requirements for a starters, plus when going from HK to mainland China it is treated as an international flight.

Just quickly, last week when I flew across on QF127, we ended up with a headwind all the way there which from memory added over an hour and a half onto our travel time. According to the pilot it was not that uncommon, also HKG is a BIG airport, so if you get dumped at a gate down the far end, it may take quite some time to get to transit security and then onto your next gate.

Thanks for that advice, the flight to HKG will be QF127, and if headwinds are not that uncommon then I may just look at some other later flights.

I would not mind having a break in a lounge either if there is one to use (both of us are WP's) I guess it would come down to who the flight to Beijing is with (pref OW member or affiliate)

I did MEL-HKG-PVG (on CX) last month and like harvyk had no problems at all. HKG AP is simply magnificent and really easy to get around.

You can travel from HKG to PEK on CX and use either the Wing or the Pier depending on where your departure gate is located.

There are several transit points located throughout the airport - you do not need to go all the way towards the exit to clear transit security. In fact the ones at the far ends of the terminal are often very quick as they are little used - the transit security by immigration however can be another story with long snaking lines depending on the time of day.
