Sydney - Singapore - Male with points upgrade

Hi everyone,

I am close to finally booking a "COVIDed out" Maldives trip (Luxury Escapes) and need some advice on air travel, please.

I have 683,000 Velocity points and hope to use them to access business class (2 people) for the SYD-SIN-SYD legs. We are planning a couple of nights in Singapore on the way over and then flying directly home.

My confusion is that VA will not let me book through to Male with them, meaning a VA+SQ booking is costly and sounds like trouble. SQ will let me book directly through (obviously) and works out to be almost half the cost of the VA+SQ option.

I saved my points for years for this very purpose and would love to be able for my wife to experience business class after she has listened to all my business travel stories over the years!

- Do you have any advice on the best way to utilise my points for the purpose above?
- Can I use the points to purchase from SQ directly, or do I need to convert to Krisflyer?
- Should I purchase an upgradeable fare and use the points to upgrade? If so, how?
- Is there anything else I am missing and should know?

Thank you so much for your help in advance, I really appreciate your help.

Have a great day, everyone.

If you do transfer points from VFF, to KF, 865,000 becomes 562,260, /2 = 281,130.
Rather than MLE, which is a bit far, would you be happy to do something in Malaysia, making it easy to get up from SIN and back, more options that just SQ to MLE.
"kick my tail" if you must, ...
Maybe putting all points to KF, and then doing the redemption, direct from there, is easier than dealing with VFF & KF, or KF only, like you said, too complicated can only cause further problems, if one flight into SIN or from SIN is late, though SQ's OTperf is quite good, and their service is +++.
Wait for the other colleagues to have their say tho.

Thank you for the reply. There will be no kicking, as I really appreciate the advice.

We purchased the Maldives hotel part of this trip a few years ago, just prior to COVID, so that has been sitting as a credit waiting to be used. It is now close to expiry.

So the Maldives is locked, it's now a matter of how we get there!

Thanks again.

It’s a lot easier to book reward travel as two one-ways if there are different destinations.

Try SYD-SIN and MLE-SYD as two seperate searches. I can find business availability for both.

Highly recommend not doing a KrisFlyer transfer - it’s a very inefficient use of points here.

When you say "they won't let" you book to MLE...do you just mean there's no availability? Because VA can definitely ticket you on a business award to MLE e.g.

That's crazy. I can't even see or pick it as a destination. on my browser, but I can see it on the VA app. I even called VA a month ago and asked why - their response was, "You just can't book to that destination with us." It was very frustrating.

Thanks for the reply and the enlightenment!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
