My folks have just landed at Sydney, having flown Upper Class on Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow. They have a Virgin Australia flight up to the Sunshine Coast in a few hours (economy). They tried to access the lounge with their Atlantic Upper boarding pass but were turned away.

Is that right? I thought arrivals access was allowed on Upper/Business tickets?

What cabin were they travelling on the SYD MCY segment ? Y class NO , J class YES

I assume also they have no status on VS?

SYD-MCY does not have J as a sold class and there is no arrivals access except for revival at LHR.

The map doesn't seem to have been updated - they added J to MCY a few months after the original nationwide J launch:

Addressing the OP's situation, the only pax who get arrivals access to DJ domestic Lounges (not that there are any international Lounges anyway) are Platinum or Gold Velocity members. The only incoming VS pax who could get access in the OP's situation would be DJ Platinum or Gold members (and it wouldn't be arrivals access anyway, it would be departures access for the SYD-MCY flight).

Thanks for that, explains it!

Yes, only Gold and Plat members get arrivals access.

Personally, I think VA should extend arrivals access to people coming of international J flights, its what I would expect flying J.

Its fairly rare for that to happen no matter what airline you fly, the words onward J often are mentioned.
