$600 million lost to Sydney Airport curfew | thetelegraph.com.au

SYDNEY Airport's curfew is costing the state almost $600 million a year as frustrated airlines fly to rival airports. Qatar Airways is the latest carrier to criticise Sydney's 11pm to 6am curfew, with CEO Akbar Al Baker saying the airline would not fly here unless there were changes.
Mr Al Baker said it was impossible to schedule flights to Sydney amid the current restrictions.
Sydney's loss has been our southern cousin's gain, with a recent study finding Melbourne Airport's 24-hour status allowed it to handle an extra two million passengers a year - who added $590 million to the Victorian economy.

Brisbane and Perth have the same problem during peak hours.
Perth is easily fixed as explained by Geoff Thomas in the latest issue of Australian Aviation, but SYD And BNE are politically restrained in lifting flights per hour, and the CURFEW !!!!!
Cheers,
Dee.

Is this ever going to stop?

Not until the government puts the interests of infrastructure and the entire NSW population ahead of their re-election chances.

In other words, fat chance. Go Melbourne (from a Sydney boy)

This will make Melbourne's third runway even more important. The day will come, fairly soon, when pax numbers into Melbourne will exceed Sydney.

I'm all for lifting the curfew .... as soon as they double-glaze and otherwise fully sound-proof my house. Or perhaps they could operate the airport for 100% safety and efficiency rather than this gutless "noise sharing" approach.

Now that would be political courage!

I understand the SYD issues but don't understand how politics refers to BNE?

Not until SYD gets rid of its ridiculous curfew :!:
I disagree.

Most (major) airports around the world have curfews.

And I do not see the attraction of arriving or departing in the middle of the night. No trains. No buses. And no domestic flights until the morning.

Whilst you may not many do. There are 9, sometimes 10 mainly wide body flights that leave MEL between 11pm and 1:30am. If going all the way to Europe and shifting 9 or 10 timezones, time of departure is neither here nor there. Many prefer to arrive on Europe mid afternoon compared to 5 or 6 am!

For me, even going back home to SIN from MEL after a short trip it gives more time back with family/friends when leaving at midnight - otherwise you're heading to the airport at 2pm and kill half a day.

Also it allows cheaper airfares as airlines can improve capital utilisation (eg PER and DRW red eyes). And lastly one acronym ... IRROPs .. Nice not to have to spend another night away (or be delayed 8hrs) due to that thunderstorm hitting at 9pm.

Your prerogative.

That really does surprise me. Are they rigid like SYD or do they factor in a little common sense and flexibility?

See post #15 from dajop. I support his answer.

I'm with you on this.. I like the idea of leaving late at night for Europe.. Did it going to HKG and it was good arriving in the morning.

Couldnt agree more. The airport was there long before those whining residents.
in any case the noise is something you get used to very quickly.

Where we live now is relatively quiet, although we do get the odd Roulette display out the back door. Previously have lived on an airfield with RPT and a few military aircraft and prior to that on an airfield with F4 and F111 aircraft which is real aircraft noise :!:

I much prefer to leave in the middle of the night for a long flight than leave during the day as you get to your destination and have to go to bed.

I am going to MNL in May and looking at leaving on a SQ flight which leave at 11.45pm.

I would hate to live under a fllght path tho.

Maybe they need to move SYD airport. LOL
