SYD transfer travelling to DFW in F

OK, so now my next question. :p
It looks like I can request an upgrade from DFW-SYD. I have paid for J, but for 50k QF points (I have 80k) I can request an upgrade to F. Is it worth it? I will earn roughly 37k points with this return trip which would leave about 120k points if I don't upgrade.

I would. Upgrades are a pretty good use of points and particularly for such a long flight I think you'll appreciate the space and comfort of F.

I'd get off the M1 at Laverton and get on to the Ring Road. Stay off the WestGate.
Sorry, I tend to refer too the whole length of the Geelong-Melbourne road as the 'West Gate' which is wrong, but it's an annoying habit that we west of Werribee tend to do.

I would, the bed in F is much more comfortable than J, so unless you see a good use for points after you come back, seize the day and spend the points :)

Agree. Huge difference in hard product between J and F on QF. I find the J bed not very comfortable while their F bed is one of the best in the air.
For such a long flight I would try to upgrade.

Agree, definitely upgrade. Well worth the points.
If they ever put the new business suites on the A380 I'd change my opinion for a night flight until then I'd request the upgrade every single time.

Considering using points + pay with the orginal booking was only going to save me around $500 using 80,000 points, I'd say the upgrade using 50,000 points would be a no brainer? The fare difference alone is about $3500.

It is really good value. Also you will possibly find it easier to get an upgrade from DFW. Upgrades are given out in status order, so you will be quite far down, but I think DFW is less popular.

Upgrade from J to F is not worth it for me as I need all the points I can generate....

Agreed ... at least for USA to Oz - Business is fine.

I would not bother. If you did get the upgrade, it would likely be a let down after traveling First from Sydney.

First is far better value in the other direction (from Oz to USA). Out of SYD you get the Degustation menu, you are departing early afternoon so would generally not be too tired to make the most of it s]etc.

Out of DFW/LAX, it's late in the evening. The "supper" menu is more limited and FA's just want PAX to go to sleep, not sit up and enjoy the product.

Another vote for the upgrade here. The QF droop bed in J is a pretty ordinary, not very private, product for a long haul flight. As PF said earlier if the new J suites on the A330 are introduced to the A380 I would be less inclined to use my points for an upgrade.

At the moment I will stick with J for the return flight, but that could change.
I'm flying in to DFW on the day of departure from SAT at 10.30am and then have all day to spare for a 10pm departure to SYD. I'll most likely eat onboard and then sleep much of the way anyway.

J is the sweet spot. YMMV
That's right. We are all different. Luckily I have saved most of my points and have not wasted them on upgrades. A very busy couple of years coming up and time to use those points with the lower fuel surcharges.

If it's the supper service don't count on getting much to eat onboard - typically it is a small plate only, no entree, no salad, no dessert. Obviously they expect you to have eaten dinner in the lounge beforehand.

This is indeed the case, although I am not sure what the DFW evening catering is like these days in tge lounge QF contracts.

We were there in May last year. I am a bit hazy as to what bit was the J lounge and what bit was F - we went through into a lounge and then there was a glass door that said F and that is where our friends were, so we sat there. In the main part of the lounge (the bit where I am unsure if it is also F, or whether that bit is J), there was a self service buffet, with a selection of hot food and salads. Enough to make a decent meal if you wanted to eat before boarding. We didn't eat anything, but had a 3 course meal on board the plane (this was in F).

My supper services in both F and J out of LAX always get salad and dessert. Smaller main, but still decent enough. Not sure if it's different out of DFW though.

Another quick question. Do I check in at MEL at the domestic counters?
