I live a little further than you, in Maroubra, and I get this 99.9% of the time!:evil::evil::evil:. Most time I challenge them to stop the cab and to let me out which of course they don't. But then again, one have to be careful, 'cause they will know your address!!:shock:

I have often said "just let me out then" and have never been taken up on my offer. If they don't want to wait 2 hours for a fare don't go to the airport, simple.

As serfty mentioned there is a "short trip" rule (I believe if they are back in 20 minutes they get to jump the queue) but it would be hard for them to drop you off, get payment and get back within 20 mins.

Exactly. When I first moved to Adelaide, I was staying at the airport motel, literally walking distance, but I didn't realise where it was. Anyway, the cab driver took me, wasn't sour but said, that it was close and I could get the bus, he even help with luggage. Anyway, he got $20 for a $5 fare, because if I was the cab driver I would have been very upset.

really, it is only new or dumb drivers that go to the airport, or those looking for a break.

From memory the sydney basin is well serviced by trains in oparticular campbelltown, penrith and hornsby. I'm not sure that the suburban trains would stop people from using the airport link, that certainly hasn't stopped me from using the airport link. What stops me from using the airport link is the cost! If you have 2 people at central station it is cheaper to get a cab. But compared to a $120 it isn't that bad.

As for the cost of a private vehicle pickup, I thought the tread was about the alternative. One alternative is to get to the nearest station that is serviced by express trains and then train it to the airport. That can then turn you $120 taxi fare into a $25 taxi fare plus a $25 train fare - Saving $70, depending on a few factors. If linking up to the right train you might even save some time on the trip.

Who would have thought I would last this long? It has actually been 16 months in Brisboring and it is still boring. The only things to look forward to are the Brisbane drinks nights and of course the weekends back home in Sydney.

Of course, there is always the bus (400), the walk to Mascot etc.

Compare Sydney train fares to get to/from the airport(s) and it is not that much more expensive than Brisbane's airtrain. At least Sydney's train service to/from the airport(s) does not stop at 8:00pm each night....

Which reflects Sydney's rail pricing in general. Quite to very expensive over short distances, scaling up to very cheap over longer distances.

As for taxis and short trips at Sydney airport, one of the last trips I ever took by personal choice was on an 8k trip from Domestic. Tried to get in, got the where you are going, answered, then was shouted and sworn at to get out of the cab, was shocked and did so... then got told off by the next taxi driver for not taking the first cab. I honestly don't think anyone would have persisted when you have a crazy taxi driver shouting and gesticulating at you like he was.

The first guy should have lost his licence for that (not that they ever would) but there was no controller and I was too stunned to have thought about his registration. When I did, he was gone.

Since then though, no Sydney taxis for me unless I absolutely have to. It's a memory I'll never forget.

The only problem with that is that the whole of Sydney Airport is designated a "No Stopping" area unless otherwise signed. Picking up within the airport but outside a car park could mean, if you are spotted, the same fine as picking up at the Departures drop off area. They have the power to do it under the 'Control of On-Airport Activities Regulation 1997.

Pick up at Customs house, only 20-50 mtres past the new carpark building and ample space to keep moving "looking for a park" or "looking lost" until your pax arrive.. F^%$$ i hate SACL.

Anyone notice they have stopped the "return to airport" lane at domestic and they make you drive into captain cook drive.. What a$$holes..

I totally reject the term rat running. This is some PC BS that is supposed to make people feel guilty for not decided to be a sheep and only use the same 3 roads as everyone else and end up sitting in a traffic jam all day. I'm sorry but roads are built to allow people to get from point a to point b and access their homes. I'm not going to feel guilty for using the most direct or convenient roads to allow me to make my journey in the most efficie nt way. /rant

So around $23/$24 in toll exp’s per return trip.

I have given up driving to the airport.

All the suggestions here seem to involve too much walking.

I also refuse to pay $7 for basically a loading zone service.

I live in your area, and I would either take bus 610 into city, then take the train, or T65 to Parramatta then train to airport. Both are reliable, giving me certainty on travelling time.

I found the driving time from north west Sydney to Mascot ranges from 60 mins to 100 minutes. Maybe I have not found any short cuts?

Gosh I love those "authorised traffic management controllers" in the fluro orange coloured jackets around the airports.

Instead of assisting with traffic flow eg. telling drivers to move on when parked or stopped illegally to minimise traffic issues .. these guys like to stand back, input their registration number into their little PDA's and issue an infringement fine in the mail a few days later.

If that same person tapped on the driver's window and said "move on now" ... everyone would have been happy incl. the many of other drivers who were delayed.

Guess when you have an infringement quota* to fulfil or your job is "at risk"* if you don't meet those targets ... then it becomes a conflict of interest.

I don't see where the conflict of interest comes in. More likely they're hired on a casual basis, and their job instructions were to issue infringment notices for people who stop. There's no conflict: you either do your job or don't get to keep it.

I think the "conflict" is the uniform says traffic management and the job appears to be less about managing the traffic and more about revenue raising. Issuing fines does not solve traffic delays, in fact it increases delays.

I have a Done 4 business trip coming up this weekend USA-UK- South Africa…great for the SC’s and points. So after reviewing the thread I thought I would try out some of the suggestions and compare timings, costs etc.

I depart this Sunday for L.A and as the trip is for 4 weeks I will be carrying a large Samsonite spinner and a computer wheeled case as hand luggage.

So to compare the time, cost & convenience of a private pick/up drop off v using the Sydney train system, I thought I would do the following:

Mrs Sweens to drop me off at T1 on Sunday (traffic no issue) and when I arrive back in late November a Saturday afternoon I will take the train to Epping from T1 via Central.

I will then get a pick up at Epping…I could go a little further but this gives me a couple of different train options.

I will then report back on the time, cost of each journey and any in convenience of lugging my bags around the train system.

Thanks ejb...I did check and there are lifts at all 3 stations T1-Central and Epping...not sure what they service though. So hopefully the trains will have plenty of room on a Saturday afternoon and I don't have to lug the baggage up and down stairs.
