Sounds good to me, that is assuming there definitely is a 3 minute grace period in the T1 car park?.

There is definitely a grace period driving through the T1 car park. It takes less than a minute to drive through unless you get stuck behind someone.

The only problem with that is that the whole of Sydney Airport is designated a "No Stopping" area unless otherwise signed.

You may well be right although the spot I mentioned is next to a small building, outside the car park, and as far as I could tell there are no signs around like "No stopping" or "Private Property Keep out". Highly unlikely you will find infringement officers lurking around this area.

I can only say that if I got a ticket for stopping near the entry to the car park, I would simply point out that I had to stop to collect the ticket before entering the car park.

The only problem with that is that the whole of Sydney Airport is designated a "No Stopping" area unless otherwise signed. Picking up within the airport but outside a car park could mean, if you are spotted, the same fine as picking up at the Departures drop off area. They have the power to do it under the 'Control of On-Airport Activities Regulation 1997.

If I look at Medheads costing method of .70c a km (I was suggesting .50c per Km…$40 for fuel and other car related costs)

Costs to drive to the airport for me:
( I live in the Sydney Hills District) so as mentioned the most direct route is M2 – LCT- Harbour Bridge - ED. I have tried all options and it does depend on the time of day but generally speaking any other option is normally an extra 15 to 20 minute journey each way.

Tolls $24 approx. (HB x1 South only ED x1 North only)
(at Medheads rate .70c a Km 80km x .70 = $56.00)
Car $56
Car Park $7 or via JohnK 0
Total $80 -$87

Doing this excersise it makes a shuttle at $90 or a taxi at $120 a cost effective option due to the two hour return journey if it is a private pick up.

I thnk youre a pretty extreeme example - 40kms Hills District from the airport is serious outer suburban fringe. Sydney Airport is very convenient and centrally located for most people.

That said, I haven't used Sydney Airport in a while so am reading this thread with interest.

You could take one of the free hotel shuttles to the Holiday Inn, Stamford etc and be picked up from there. Spend 15-30 mins to save $7

I would not put someone through 2+ hours driving to pick me up from the airport if it was only likely to save a small amount of money.

I am lucky that I live close to the airport and my father has offered to transport me to/from the domestic airport (~15 minutes from home) for my almost weekly commute to BNE for work. For personal international trips he is quite happy to drop me off at the airport (~11 minutes from home) but I would not want him to come and pick me up at 6:00am when a taxi would only cost ~$30....

Or train to Epping for about $25 or $30 then pick up from there which would probably only involve M2 toll = what $10.

Only picked epping because it is one of the stations that has express trains from central and used be quite quick to get to.

The geographic centre of Sydney is west of Parramatta. Parramatta is almost at the Hills area.

So I don't think someone living in the Hills is unusual for someone flying out of SYD.

Yes SYD is very convenient if you live in the Eastern Subs or the Brighton Le Sands area.

Bottom line is SYD is a huge city, the traffic is grid locked a lot of the time, public transport is pretty wowful, there are only a handful of lines and they are all over crowded.

From our home its $18 in tolls to the airport (return trip), then you pay for parking etc etc etc. It can take anything between 40 minutes and 3 hours depending on the traffic. Sometimes getting to the airport and back is more expensive than the airfares - even from some Trans Tasman fares.

This is reality for the majority of SYD residents, hence the angst over the cost of parking.

Just adding a realistic different view to this discussion.

The bottom line here is that upon reviewing this thread there is not much upside in getting a private pick up at T1 for me and many other Sydney residents, once you factor in the time taken, costs of tolls, petrol and the T1 $7 minimum fee just tops it off.

I gotta say I can't exactly agree. When I lived in Sydney it wasin the West, to NWN, in just north of the river in the homebush to parramatta region. (not Epping as per my earlier suggestion, but 20 minutes towards parramatta from epping) and the airport was fine to get to, because I would train it, mostly. If travelling with 2 or more it was train to central and then taxi (cheaper than a train tickets for 2)

Basically, I think that it is a simple case of accept that the train is the way to go in a place like sydney. For those on the other then the simple thing is to explore the options nearby. e.g epping station, or otherwise with parking.

I completely agree. Since the airport rail link went in, the airport is extremely convenient to the city, and most parts of Sydney have pretty good transport to the City. For a major international airport, it is extremely central and as a result accessible for more people than if it were stuck out in, say, Badgerys Creek.

I wonder if there's a market for Windsor or Richmond Airports being used for commercial flights on certain routes? Those airports would be a lot more convenient for you fringe dwellers.

This thread seems to have moved on to how convenient the location Sydney airport is and who is a fringe dweller!

My opinion is that while conveniently located to the city of Sydney, the Sydney airport is difficult to get to for the majority of people who live within what could be termed the greater Sydney basin…draw a semi circle from Engadine –Campbelltown - Penrith –Hornsby-Palm Beach.

Unfortunately the airport rail link has been a failure as not many people use it…this no doubt due to a number of reasons, one of which is that it has normal suburban trains which also service non airport stations on the airport line, therefore the trains are not designed for people with luggage.

Compare this say to the Hong Kong airport rail link where the design, service of the trains and ease of using this service is great and Sydney comes in as a very poor relation.

So for the majority of people it’s a trip via a taxi or private vehicle to use the airport and this gets back to the purpose of the original thread…that is the cost of a private vehicle pick up when accessing T1.

Perhaps a move should be considered.

Rent in outer Sydney $350-$400 per week
Rent in eastern Subs $500-$2500 per week

To save $80 per airport trip you will spend up to $2100 per week more in rent.

See living in the fringes does have some good points. BTW I live in Rosebery so $12 taxi fare in 10 minutes.

Causeway Bay seems to be my most regular abode presently. Quite easy access to the airport from here.

From memory the sydney basin is well serviced by trains in oparticular campbelltown, penrith and hornsby. I'm not sure that the suburban trains would stop people from using the airport link, that certainly hasn't stopped me from using the airport link. What stops me from using the airport link is the cost! If you have 2 people at central station it is cheaper to get a cab. But compared to a $120 it isn't that bad.

As for the cost of a private vehicle pickup, I thought the tread was about the alternative. One alternative is to get to the nearest station that is serviced by express trains and then train it to the airport. That can then turn you $120 taxi fare into a $25 taxi fare plus a $25 train fare - Saving $70, depending on a few factors. If linking up to the right train you might even save some time on the trip.

I love Adelaide and all that - the wine, family, my job, the money etc. But I sure do miss BrisVegas!
