SYD - MEL - TOK - BLR - Will bags be checked through?

I've booked a flight SYD - MEL (QF), and then MEL - TOK - BLR (JL).

My booking however shoes the entire route as a single trip, with a "layover" in MEL of 20.5 hours. I land on a Sat morning in Melbourne and take off on Sunday morning.

Does anyone know if I'll be able to collect my bags in Melbourne, given this shows up as a single itinerary?
Qantas haven't been too helpful in getting me an answer - all I've gotten is "you will know when you check in".

No airport in Australia checks a bag through "overnight". You'll need to get your bags at Melbourne then re-check them in on Sunday. If you haven't already, book yourself a hotel near the airport (remeber ibit budget has no lift).

There is smarte Carter luggage storage at Melbourne airport.
I think between T2 and T3
Presumably the OP is seeking something for themselves as well given that the question was getting their luggage back in MEL.

I understood that they wanted to get their checked luggage at MEL
The luggage storage option provides options if they only need part of their checked luggage and not all of it.

Yes, you will be able to collect your luggage. If worried make sure you say you want to collect luggage when you check in at Sydney.

Also are you flying to Bengaluru? What airport do you mean with TOK?

not how I read it. Seems really clear they want their luggage back.
Given a 20 hour connection, wanting luggage back seems entirely reasonable to me

Im pretty sure this is what i said ( and quoted by you):

🤔

I mentioned the luggage storage option as an option only because while people may want their checked luggage on a layover, they sometimes may not need all of it.

Had CBR-MEL-NRT in Aug.
last flight to MEL of the day, early JL departure 8 hour overnight.
QF staff at CBR checked through and said don't have to worry about bags in MEL.
Checked with JL before going through immigration in the morning, they didn't get the bags.
Took the JL ground staff and the QF F lounge front desk staff calling around to locate the bag and get it to JL for loading. (F lounge staff confirmed it had been passed on when I left, and JL ground staff said the same at the gate)

You'll need to collect any bags, even if they are tagged through and you're told not to worry about them.

Just over a month ago I flew from MEL to TPE with an overnight transit in HKG. One booking / PNR - first leg with QF and second leg with CX.

I was in business (whether that made any difference - obviously not) and yet they didn't check my bags through - they were only checked to HKG. I asked twice if it could be through checked to TPE, considering my transit was <24hrs, they said no, unless the transit is within the same day.

So, what that being said, I'd say to expect to collect your bags in MEL and re-check in the next day.
