SYD-LHR-MAD Two different Booking Ref - Need to collect luggage?

I thought the exception to the separate PNR interline baggage rule was a combination of revenue and award travel. As OP's tickets are both award redemption, this exception doesn't apply.

Interline and Through Checked Baggage
yeah…that’s the table i was looking for!

which says ‘no’.

the other agency link i posted seems to indicate ‘yes’, but is inconsistent or amguous with this one.

Is there still CR seats on LHR-MAD?

You could technically call up and add those to the longhaul booking (for a fee).

And then cancel the current LHR-MAD flights (for a fee). Unfortunately there’s no guarantee that cancelling those first, they’ll automatically reappear.

Anyway, the benefits of everything in one ticket:
1. Bags checked thru
2. No UK ETA
3. Could be lower UK departure tax?
4. BUT also, protected flights if SIN-LHR is delayed.

The trade off is about 10k points pp…

Before Covid:
Twice I had a QF MEL-LAX CR ticket , plus a separate revenue SYD-MEL - all flights on QF metal
Twice they would not through check my luggage at SYD to LAX , I had to retrieve my luggage at MEL and re-check, even though the layover time was in excess of 3 hours.

The asterix is the important bit… it does say revenue to award = through check. I think others have had some success with that?

The problem arose when OW/airlines (started with BA I think) started to not through check baggage onto another OW airline if the tickets were on separate PNR.
The problem with Classic rewards is that they tend to be single sector only especially the prized J international. So QF created an exception that it would through check baggage in those circumstances when one of the PNR were a classic reward but this was only a QF exception. - it was done mainly for those passengers interlining to another OW carrier. For example QF (reward) to AA (revenue)

While the exception * or ^ refers to "to/from", as this was a Qantas generated exception, one could not guarantee that AA would do the same for AA to QF .

However in my case the tickets were QF issues and flights were both on QF metal.
At the checkin I was told that because one was a classic reward, through check was not allowed, even though they were all QF flights.

It was only twice though, I have had QF CR from LAX to BNE/MEL and then revenue BNE/MEL to SYD with no problems with through check.
I put it down to the information not percolating down to the coalface (even though I showed then the QF website showing the exception)

Definite staff problem. Never had an issue with QF to QF separate PNR interline even as of December last year flying ADL - SYD - CGK.

Also successfully got QF to interline from QF (award) to AA (revenue) in late 2024.. Flying back was not an issue as I spent a couple of nights at DFW.
