Thanks to another recent thread, have looked at making my next SYD to LHR booking in two stages, using QAN Australian sight for Sydey to Singapore, and then the SIN site for there to LHR. Seems like a way to save money - especially as the SIN site still have Fare Saver deals in both B and F (unlike our own local Qan site).

Especially good when willing to buy Y+ ticket from SYD to SIN - only a 6 hr flight.

OK - here are my questions. Does anyone have experience or information regarding:
  1. What is the chance of an op-up for the Y+ leg, either complimentary or on points - I'm a WP
  2. What about the SIN to LHR legs? The B saver fare is $6194AU return, the F saver is $10151AU return. (Yes, I know Saver fares are usually non-upgradeable, but this hasn't been a hassle in the past with a 100% positive strike rate!)
Travel plans are:
Sat 22/5 - QF9 or QF 31 to Singapore, then QF 31 on to London
Mon 31/5 - QF 32 on both legs home

I don't have access to seat counter or any other - so anyone with access and skill, please, would appreciate your advice.

Seat counter is free; you must mean Expert Flyer or KVS - the latter two need a paid subscription.

Looks like you're travelling in late May. In some sense, this should mean all backlogs due to the ash clouds should have been cleared by then, so back to 'normal', but Murphy always has surprises.

Chances of upgrades? Operational, of course never hold your breath. Points upgrades, probably good chance. There haven't been many WPs' points upgrade requests of late that have been declined (except for somewhat explainable exceptions). So as a WP even for the longer leg I think you stand a good chance, although it will depend highly on the loadings in the class that you want to upgrade into.

Rather interesting as I've just checked the fare type guide really quickly on QF, but it seems that if you ticket a J saver going to EU in AU, you are eligible to register for an upgrade, but if you ticket a J saver in SIN, not allowed. Weird rules. Can anyone anecdotally advise otherwise? (The OP seems to have evidence of this?)

Indeed they are, anat0l. Mind you, the new J 'Saver' fares from this afternoon at almost the same as the normal Business Class fare that was posting this morning - looks like Qan has significantly increased the cost of its fares yet again: and they wonder (surely they must) why people lok for cheaper alternatives!
