Train to depart Sydney around 2pm
pick up Olympic Park, some of the suburban lines have track work this weekend but we can get out by going in circles and into Chullora via the freight network.
Then via the Southern Sydney Freight only line and onto the main south to Moss Vale and Goulburn and Canberra after a meal stop.

People welcome to come part way if they wish.

I may be interested if I can get flights to work out. Need to head back to NZ on Sunday.

Approximate times, we can pick up and if anyone wants a really short ride drop off at Olympic Park at 13:35

Sydney Terminal dep 1315
Moss Vale 1600
Goulburn 1710-1840 (Dinner Break)
Canberra arr 2030 Run round & shunt to Canberra Railway Museum

Would love to come along for this! I've seen a few BAM trips over the years but have never been able to sort out the work details. Still space avaialble?

@Viridianne, maybe we'll be the only 2 non-blokes on this bloke run of the BAM.

So assuming a regular Sat service looks like getting out at Goulburn the best bet and booking the Xplorer service.
Moss Vale 1600
Moss Vale 1605 Central 1829 Opal $6.20
Moss Vale 1802 Central 1945 XPT service needs booking - about $18/25
Moss Vale 1835 Central 2110 Opal $6.20
First service probably difficult given the usual delays.

Goulburn 1710-1840 (Dinner Break)
Goulburn 1835 Central 2116 Xplorer service needs booking - about $29/36
Goulburn 2107 Central 0039 Opal $6.20

As long as you don’t love to far from central at that hour.

So I gather it’s more of a one-way trip now ?

I’ll be bronze -

as much as I’d like to be along the logistics might work if the tramway to open in Sydney around that time. Could do three birds with one stone tramway in Canberra, steam and Sydney Light Rail (side-trip to Newcastle light rail perhaps)

Local press has reported Sat 7 Dec as the target date for opening of the city section and Randwick branch, with fallback a week later.

But yet to be formally announced by Govt until the testing is complete (the Metro opening was only announced about 10 days out).

Reportedly running to a full timetable under test from the Monday and the finish touches (eg. Opal readers) have started being installed.

In any event I’m tied into Adelaide until 7th... Test cricket, friends over and a big theatre show!

When our extension opened, it was announced on the morning of.....lol

Light rail L2 opening officially confirmed for 14-Dec with two days of free travel, then normal services.

Looking like we have a nice size group which is excellent. I’m still waiting for our maintenance people to advise what locos will be used, train will be 4 cars, the BAM, our company one and 2 from the railway museum in Canberra.

Depart Sydney Terminal 13:15

Goulburn 16:42 to 18:40 for dinner stop.

Canberra 20:50

Sunday morning for anyone who happens to live in Goulburn.

Depart Canberra 07:20

Arrive Goulburn 09:42

Checked the weather, and it looks hot, very hot. So be sure to keep the liquids up!

Those who couldn’t make still might if the date moves to January.

The bushfires south of Sydney have closed the line and waiting to find out if the train can come to Sydney. Presently has a crew on it in Goulburn waiting.

I'm secretly (guess it's not a secret anymore) hoping for a Jan trip.

But I'd hate to see everyone planning for tomorrow be disappointed. Fingers crossed for you all.
