SYD Airport Hotel

The thing I definately know more than anyone here and you would love love to sit next to me on a plane next time, is countown from 10 to touchdown. I have an inbuilt GPS:mrgreen: Always spot on :) The amount of planes/and their types certain airlines have and their configs I can help out also.

Other than that, I only use my FF with Qaintass :) and Virgin to see how bad they are in comparision to the int'l airlines

Just need a place to crash after LHR-SYD flight then domestic flight early next AM.
Finally used wotif secret airport hotel & came up with Holiday Inn. As long as the bed is fine :)
Wotif's Wot Hotel 4.5* resembled only the SYD HI on Wotif's list (aside from the pool, which I also noticed).

Duly booked. I wish I'd booked this when the ICH sale was on, to get the stay credit.
You might want to ask them to use the Wot Swimming Pool indicated in the listing, its never had one in its 20 years, apart from that is perfectly adequete for what you intend to use it for !
I'm expecting an amused look and a 'wot pool?' reply if I ask the reception person about the hotel's pool. :D

I suppose it's easier (and cheaper) to get there from Redfern by taxi than a tickets to Mascot. :(

I think I've stayed at the IBIS before. I've already booked it in again this year for the night before my trip to Queenstown as they're advertising free shuttle buses, which should be useful. Personally I wanted to try the Stamford, but I'm not paying and it's an extra $70.

Qantas doesn't advertise 3 points per $ spent at it so I assume I get nothing out of them for the relatively cheap booking?

Last time (and only time) I stayed at the Ibis the free shuttle was one way only, it would now appear to be $6 each way according to the hotels website! Must say the hotel's hose out bathrooms were interesting, kind of a formule 1 with a bar and without the bunk bed.

Markis, you summed it up! Ibis SYD rooms are barely above a Formule 1 room and the shuttle from the hotel to SYD is prepaid at the reception.

I have had to book a SYD hotel twice, at my own expense, TWICE as a result of major JQ flight changes.

Lesson learned: never expect a JQ flight to be as booked/paid and expect it may require adding the cost of one or two hotel nights.

All up JQ has cost me around $525 in hotel costs due to two ticketed afternoon flights being cancelled and substituted with very different flights.

I've NEVER been offered any option aside from 'accept the change or get a refund'. :(

If I paid normal rates the cost weould be double as the hotels were Ibis SYD, Conrad SIN and HI SYD.
[/rant :p]

If staying at the Novotel BLS, and you like seafood, there is an excellent seafood restaurant across the road. I can recommend the seafood plata for two as being the best seafood I have ever had served.

I can't recall the name Perhaps someone else may know the name as I am sure it is well known.

Stayed at the Mercure last July - it's easily walkable to the Int terminal (i did it just to get some exercise - takes no more than 15mins (?add 5mins per large suitcase!)

It's really showing it's age though, and the rooms weren't that sound-proof (screaming toddler next door - thanks). Food fine, facilities very basic.

The HI or the Novotel would be my choice next time (and get shuttle / stump for taxi).

I stayed at the Novotel BLS many times from the late 90's up until about 5 years ago. There's several seafood restaurants across the road from the Novotel - one down the road from the corner about 50 metres is called the "Lazy Lobster".

I have eaten in the area many times - there is also quite a nice French (BYO!) restaurant nearby.

Novotel BLS is quite nice however it does not have a shuttle to the airport which I find odd, and yes the local restaurants are very good IMHO.

I agree the Mecure is old, however our company uses it occasionally for conferences, also the Quest Mascot is not a bad option with rooms around $135 however its opening hours are restrictive:

Well I love a good hotel room but when i am staying near the airport in Sydney it is because of an early morning flight out so all I need is a bed and reasonably quiet. The Ibis fits the bill and usually cheapest.

I think the seafood restaurant across Bay Street from Novotel is Petar's Seafood. Lazy Lobster is also nearby around the corner on Grand Parade and further up is Botany Bay Seafood restaurant. But any of the restaurants/cafes, including Neptunes, Bay Vista, Kamari, Mezes, have decent food.

I think the best restaurant in the area would have to be Le Sands which is across Grand Parade, beach side, and a couple of hundred metres up the road. Fairly expensive but great food. Also has a trendy cafe next door called Signatures. Both are owned but the same people and I used to go to school with the owners nephew....

Thanks, that sound familiar. The seafood platter was awesome. I have not found better elsewhere since. The best bit was that it was a supplier that was paying.

Yep, thet's the one - I shared many a "Petar's Platter".

The French restaurant is called "Larousse". Bach then it was BYO. There's a bottle shop directly across the road for those wishing a BYO tipple.

I like the stamford domestically as i can walk there and back

Have the shuttle buses changed recently? looked like a private firm with fares both ways last Friday night

Internationally i stay in Darling Harbor (sheraton 4 points) as i like the area better for walking and its not that far by cab at 6 am :D

otherwise internationally i fly up in the morning

^ Yep the shuttle has changes, but think it's same price. Only took it once normally walk or get lift from clients etc.

I try to avoid those overnight connections in SYD.

I used the IBIS once on a Sunday night and they shut the restaurant at 2030.

I used the Stamford once on a Saturday night and their signature restaurant was closed for a wedding!

I will try to avoid JetStar special offers, whose cancelled flights turn a 3.20PM flight into an overnight connection + 7AM departure, in future.

JQ, QF and DJ all have moved/cancelled/changed a lot of flights, but obviously, JQ has the lowest frequency and lowest level of service/convenience.

Best av:evil:ided!

We'll road-test the SYD Wot Hotel (aka Holiday Inn) tomorrow night, pre-CNS and pre-JQ952's advertised 07:00 departure.
