Woohoo! I'm very happy to hear that the whisky bar does serve in the AM. Not too much, but something to take the edge off.

Plan will be to get there for 7.30 check-in... And then proclaim it's 5 o'clock somewhere to Mrs tizey to sample a beverage or two before boarding :)

That's most acceptable. I had a few Yamazaki tasters at the JAL Flounge prior to a morning flight:D

I've stayed at the ZRH airport Hilton for exactly the same reason. OK for location and shuttle to airport. Train to city nearby. The LH lounge is good but a bit of a trek from check in and security. Everything just works in Switzerland though.

Any tips on ZRH as a city? We land in the morning and are thinking we'd have a night there...tips?

I actually stuffed up return flts one year and ended up with a spare day in ZRH - stayed at Park Inn just outside airport - took train into Zurich city and walked entire day - was just fabulous day just strolling, window shopping and browsing - back to hotel then taxied to a local typical Swiss restaurant for dinner - was a perfect day. So IMHO so simple to spend a day there and thoroughly enjoy a quick visit.

To get availability from Tromso and ZRH in August, I reluctantly had 2 days in ZRH and unexpectedly had a great time just wandering the old city, and then further afield. Fascinating.

I stayed in a good Best Western to keep costs down. Best Western Plus Hotel Zürcherhof

The highlight was a trip to the Lindt factory, and the huge outlet store. It is worth staying in town if you have a long layover as you can just get the excellent trams in and out. I also learned that Tina Turner resides in ZRH with her husband.

If you have a night, or several, at ZRH then a good alternative to Zurich is to just catch the train from the airport to Lucerne. Quick and easy trip.

If the weather is ok you can go up the Cable Car, or Cog Railway, to Pilatus for amazing mountain views too. Pilatus - Switzerland Tourism
This makes for a perfect min-Swiss holiday.

Everything just works in Switzerland though.

Indeed. I was in the mens toilet catching the cable car up Mt Pilatus and initially had trouble getting the slightly unusual tap to work. A local came in and on my inquiry of whether the tap was broken, he gave me a surprised, even mortified, look and said no this is Switzerland.

If you've got a clear day (no haze), the ublirecht (spelling might be wrong) is good to go up. Train from Zurich HB takes you up, then it's a short stroll up the top. From there, there is a lookout of 360 of Zurich and the surrounding mountains.

+1 to Luzern. Definitely can do it for a day trip. We even went to Mt Titlis as well.

Thanks for all the help regarding Zurich. Train to Lucerne and then doing the "Golden Round Trip" looks like what we'll do. Better go easy on the wine on the flight ...

Booked yesterday outbound SYD-SIN-DEL all on 380's in R for Christmas next year.

Now to wait until the return dates open up.

It's a long time to wait though!

Hi, hoping to get some advice here from the experts.

I am in the process of moving 2 x rtn confirmed saver suites SYD-SIN-ZHR to earlier in the year as we found out my wife is pregnant.

I have had some luck and managed to get confirmed moves on all but 1 x one way suites saver ticket SYD-SIN-ZHR, which I am currently waitlisted in saver for a departure in about 3 months time. We have sent a few chasers and linked our ticket as hers is confirmed with nothing back so far.

SYD-SIN-ZRH currently has standard award availability
SYD-SIN has has saver availability but SIN-ZRH is waitlist

Whats a good strategy here:
- Can I book the standard award and remain on a waitlist for the saver award on the same flights? (I have the points available to transfer to KF)
- Should I be looking to book at least the SYD-SIN leg in saver?
- Anything else?

Thanks in advance!

Yes do as much as you can. Be prepared for Standard if you get a bit closer to the flying date.
Look up seat selection to see what is still available.
Congrats on the baby news nickc83.

We just booked Suites Savers for NYE 2017 in London. It will be a change from Sydney.

Just back from Zurich yesterday. It was my first suites experience & I obviously enjoyed it. :)
We stayed at the Raddison Blue airport hotel in Zurich which was good as it relieved a lot of the stress on flying day. Public transport was pretty good, so I could imagine a lot of people would have preferred to stay in the city. The raddison blue hotel itself was nice enough. Like almost all our hotels in europe (about 4-5), I found the bed too hard for my preference. But the main plusses was the location and the fact that it was clean.

Back to the suites flight. I asked for a private room invite at check-in, but was told they'd run out and to ask again at the gate. There was nothing wrong with the check in, but by no means was it special. We were treated no differently to economy passengers. Getting to Terminal E was more of an effort than anticipated because it was a completely seperate terminal in the airport - detached from the main 3 terminals (1-3). It was around a 3 min train ride.
Once we got to terminal E and found the lounge, I was VERY impressed with it. Easily the nicest lounge I've been to (though that's not saying much given I only know the domestic qantas & virgin lounges). I enjoyed 1 whiskey & the other half had a coughtail as our flight was delayed by 3.5 hours before boarding and a further 1.5 hours after we had boarded due to a frozen fuel pump and then later some other glitch (was -8˚). Once airborne, the attendants were very friendly, but in a professional manner rather than a genuine warm way. I'm clearly nit picking, and was more than happy with it considering we just paid taxes (felt like a fraud being there to be honest), but as an overall experience I kept thinking how I'd feel if we had paid full fare? I've not flown any other 1st class, so can't compare to them, but we both decided that our trip over on the A350 business class was nearly as good. Dining presentation on business was a notch below suites, but food was still great, bulkhead seats had ample room, and we were both blown away by how nice the new fit out on the a350 is. Suites definitely feels much more dated in comparison even though it was still more than comfortable.
Because of the delays, our connection at singapore was immediate which meant no visit for me to the private room. Oh well... :(
Anyhow, it was my first true international business or first experience (I don't count an old premium economy-like flight to NZ that was branded business), and very much enjoyed. :)
With any luck we'll be able to fly business again next year once we dump our plat edges and sign up to explorers. :)

Well done Winston1.

Mrs Lime and self over decades have been airline lounge hoppers (usually 3 hrs+), you had one alcoholic drink each in 5 hours :D yikes we drink a lot more without being sloshed :p.

...but as an overall experience I kept thinking how I'd feel if we had paid full fare?

I think it's fair to say that if you are at the stage of paying full fare for First class tickets you would usually have a reasonable understanding of the product you are buying. They are all different and you pick the one that's right for you. SQ First class you're paying for a more personal and tailored experience. Otherwise as you point out, both business and first have flat beds, both have reasonable food, and they share the same IFE.

Check-in and ground handling is usually better at an airline's home ports and - in some cases - at key (flagship) outstations. Otherwise check-in is check-in. If you are paying for First you are paying for an empty check-in counter, no queues, and fast track security services.

I think 'professional friendly' is about as good as it gets :) But even then there are varying degrees and it's often a fine balance between 'professional' and 'warm'. Qantas will call you 'mate'. Singapore Airlines won't. But SQ's professionalism and attention to detail won't vary, whereas your 'friends' on Qantas can sometimes be a different story.

Congrats on the baby news nickc83.

Thanks cove it will be nice to get a quick trip in before everything changes!

From your response does this mean SQ will let you confirm a standard award while having a waitlisted saver award on the same flight?
All flights have full availability in first so I'm quietly confident it will clear in saver, but would prefer to have a backup plan locked in.
