Hi there,

I have to plan a trip to SIN and KUL, departing 2nd week of Jan 2006 for approx 10-12 days. On past trips I have allowed the travel agent to book me on either QF5 or QF31 in J and a separate F ticket on SQ for the SIN-KUL sector.

I've just logged onto the QF website and found that for departure of Jan 8, I can get a J fare for $5,052 for SYD-SIN-SYD on QF5, QF31 and QF319, returning on QF6, QF32 or QF320.

However there is also an F fare for $5,413 on QF31 and return on either QF32 or QF320.

Is this a good price for F? I've never travelled F before so it is an enticing option and the schedule suits me. Or is there something better still on BA?

Also, is there any way to get from SIN to KUL on a one world carrier? My agent says no but maybe there is a creative way to do this via another city?

Seems to be a pretty good price.

Looking at some of my references, that price should be a touch over $6000 return. Maybe it's a seat filler special as not many business people would be travelling at that time.

I'll give you a tip though. Check out zuji. They have a return in F for $5110 roughly. Fairly restrictive for a "F" fare (probably booked in the A class) as it does have some change fees.

You also get the choice of BA or QF. Take QF one way and BA the other. Compare the two. Enjoy yourself :)

As for SIN-KUL, yes you can, but you've gotta be creative.

Fly SIN-HKG with Cathay, connect HKG-KUL with Cathay. Lots of flying for what should be about an hour's trip... but hey you do get credits with it!

Thanks for the tip - I'll check out Zuji. Will it still earn me the same level of SC's and FF points?

I thought of CX just after I posted. I might check out the schedules tomorrow. I guess I could do it all in a day. From memory SIN-HKG is approx 4 hours flying time.

Thanks Mal.

F is F... Regardless of what fare bucket you fly in the cabin you will still get the "F" status credits, miles etc. (Barring of course the usual non creditible classes such as staff travel, frequent flyer points etc etc etc).

Suprisingly enough, I'm mad enough to do the KUL-HKG-SIN dash myself. Am over in HKG/SIN this Christmas, and originally booked HKG-SIN. Then I realised I actually wanted to visit KUL as well. The cost and mucking around involved with cancelling the HKG-SIN ticket didn't work out well so just booked another return (HKG-KUL) and sandwiched the two together.

IIRC I leave KUL about 9am in the morning and arrive in SIN about 5pm. 1 hour or so is spent in HKG in the middle. The direct flight is only an hour or so, I would really recommend it over doing the HKG hop!

You know, it might just be feasible. If I spend my first week in SIN, I could fly to HKG on the Friday night, spend the w/e there and then fly back to KUL on Sunday night or Monday morning. Even though a SIN-KUL flight is only 50 mins, it would waste a decent chunk of the day anyway because of check-in requirements, immigration at each end, etc.

BTW, I found that Zuji did indeed have F fares for a good price - under $5,000 using QF/BA.

Thanks again Mal.

SIN-KUL should NOT waste much of the day. The flight is short. Check-in and immigration at SIN are fast. Immigration at KUL is fast if you fly first class (which is only a little more than economy) due to premium lane. It will only take time if have checked luggage (KUL is the worst place for checked luggage I have ever experienced).

Earlier this month, just 2 hours after arriving in SIN on another flight I was at hotel bar in KUL having a cold one with mates before heading out for sate.

Are you in Singapore 14-15 January? There's an FT Do that weekend - there will even be some AFFers going.

Yes, I will have checked luggage. I've done the SIN-KUL trip 4 or 5 times but mostly after travelling SYD-SIN and spending a few hours in the SQ 1st class lounge at some ungodly time of the morning. :(

I've been lucky enough to get through KUL quickly in the past, probably because I am usually arriving very early in the morning. The drive to the city seems longer than the flight.

There is a very good chance that I will be there that weekend. I'm looking at departing SYD on Jan 8 or 9 and spending a week in SIN before going to KUL. I'll hopefully be working out the itinerary with my boss (who is in SIN) this week.

Great if you can come - the main dinner and drinks are on Sat night (surely you wont be working then?), with other events planned middle of the night Friday (when flights from USA arrive) and also Sunday daytime & night.

If not going via HKG, then I suggest using MH rather than SQ. The fares on the SIN-KUL-SIN are pretty much regulated and they only sell two classes (F and Y) and its cheap. If using MH you get to use the MH Golden Lounge in KUL which is an excellent lounge, though the SQ F lounge in SIN is probably better than the MH lounge in SIN.

Also, and the clincher for me) is that there are only 3 airlines that have check-in facilities at KL Sentral - MH, CX and BI. And being able to check my bags before getting on the KLIA Ekspres is a big advantage.

The F fare SIN-KUL-SIN is not expensive. You also get an invitation to use the premium queue at KUL immigration for both inbound and outbound, which I assume is also provided to SQ F passengers.

One advantage to SQ is that from my observation, SQ use gates closer to the train platform when arriving and departing at the satellite terminal at KUL, so a little less distance to walk to the train to the main terminal and immigration arrival hall.

I only use the HKG option if flying as part of a OneWorld Explorer fare. Otherwise its not worth the extra time or cost. Its only about 200 miles from SIN to KUL, while its over 3000 miles via HKG.

What I would do (and have done) is 2 one-way tickets.

SQ for SIN-KUL and MH for KUL-SIN.

Its cheaper than a round trip SIN-KUL-SIN (although more than KUL-SIN-KUL), and get the best lounge/service at SIN for SIN-KUL and likewise at KUL for KUL-SIN.

Yes it is.

Thanks for the tip. I will have to keep that in mind and try it next time.

You can even book it all online now that MH has finally entered the electronic age :D

Thanks Kiwi Flyer and NM. Good tip about taking SQ one way and MH the other. I'm hoping to have the dates nailed down later this week, so I'll let you know what I've decided upon.

Mine all has to be booked through the corp travel agent. I have always needed a paper ticket for MH, but QF will interline bags even though separate tickets (e-ticket for QF BNE-SIN-BNE).

Ahh, the old Malasia/Singapore Pricing method:
MH SIN-KUL=SGD275=AUD225
MH KUL-SIN=MYR477=AUD160
SQ SIN-KUL=SGD267=AUD219
SQ KUL-SIN=MYR436=AUD146

Depending on where you want to earn points, timing, etc, another alternative may be Austrian SYD-KUL the SQ/MH KUL-SIN return and then return to SYD on OS.

I'm still trying to confirm dates for my trip, but I've been obtaining prices and now have the following for SYD-SIN & return:

My travel agent is quoting:
QF/BA
Business Class $4,180.00 return + Airport Taxes
First Class $5,298.00 return + Airport Taxes

The QF website is quoting:
QF/BA
Business Class $5,052.00 return
First Class $5,413.00 return + Airport Taxes

The Zuji website is quoting:
Business Class $3,831.00 return
First Class $4,850.00 return + Airport Taxes

It's quite a wide spread of fares. The Zuji F fare seems good value. What are other's experiences of using them?

The QF website quote allows for changes without cost, whereas Zuji has an AUD 50.00 fee for rebookings. Not sure what the agent's fare includes on this.

My experience of zuji is making changes is painful, but never had any problems in ticketing (unlike some other TAs). Also for that price difference I wouldnt worry about a $50 change fee - unlikely to have more than 1 or 2 of them and would still come out ahead.
