Hi all - been lurking for a while working through the posts and finally posting now!
When last in the States I got a free(!) US Mobile eSIM and used that to set up a Google Voice number so can receive SMS/calls when travelling. Didn't realise at the time but clearly should have used my time being physically in the US to open a local checking account, but hadn't found this thread at that point!
I then setup my mail forwarding address and applied for Hilton Aspire card via Amex GT (have had Amex Plat at home for over 10y).
Application completed and told decision pending. Nothing further after a fortnight so called, told needed a letter from my bank.
By this time I'd completed the notary call for my mail forwarding address so could access the letter scans. Amex had sent one with the following:
I found the name confirmation bit slightly weird given I'd clicked through from my existing Plat account! Tried uploading a Wise bank statement (after updating address) for address proof - no luck. Received the same letter again (albeit with a new slightly later deadline date to supply the info).
After reading more on here I then opened an HSBC US Prem account (making use of my existing home Prem account) - at first they seemed thrown by me supplying a US mobile number (which I thought would be almost a requirement!) but after getting over that they only asked for proof of 4 US visits/year which was easy to satisfy using existing flight receipts and a quick points booking for an 'upcoming' trip that seemed to do the trick and account opened. Have subsequently transferred cash in via Wise (HSBC Global View exchange rates were rubbish!)
I'd be grateful for any thoughts re the below questions:
- Has anyone had this sort of very precise bank letter requirement before? Should a statement still suffice? If not will HSBC be able to supply that sort of letter or will I need to open a checking account in person with another bank when next in the States?
- If I change the mailing address on my HSBC account (via the website or have to call?) will that show on the statement OK? I'm guessing I need to wait a month for statement to be generated - am thinking I'll not change the address immediately to make sure the debit card gets shipped direct
- Do I just have to accept this application via Amex GT is dead and let it lapse or is it worth calling them to see if they'll extend the deadline? Can I immediately apply via GT again once I have the statement or is there some sort of waiting time?
- In the meantime I've asked my HSBC 'welcome adviser' re the process for applying for the HSBC Prem Elite credit card as benefits/earning rates seem pretty decent despite the fee, esp given the decent sign-up bonus. Not sure if you are able to hold that and the normal HSBC Prem credit card simultaneously? (it also has a respectable SUB and different bonus points categories on spend!)
- I assume most folks are just using Wise to pay off CC bills, any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any help!
PS
@DAC1 - would you mind DM'ing me the details of your Fiverr person for ITIN? Thinking might be handy to have in the future if I want to branch out from Amex (assuming I actually get somewhere with them!)
