Strategy to obtain US Amex

how's people experience been with Chase, Citi and CapitalOne credit cards with an ITIN?
How long did you have to establish your credit to apply for these and did you have problems with their verification when applying from outside of the US?

Citi was my first US card (No ITIN). I have had no issue with them. Used my ITIN for the first time with them as well.

Chase couldn't do text verification (need postpaid I believe) when I called about the application but it was not an issue as they asked (public record) questions instead.

Cap1 has been fine so far. I couldn't add the card to Google pay though. Looks like I will need to call.

None of them had an issue with applying from outside the US. Maybe I was lucky, no drama with any of them.

Cool, how long did you wait (to build credit) before applying for your Chase card? I hear its hard to get approved for Chase.

I got my first US card in 2016 and applied for Chase in 2020 so a credit history was not an issue for me. I heard it should be at least 1 year. Some people were successful with less history but 1+ year is recommended. I waited about half a year after using ITIN at Citi to make sure it showed up in my credit file.

How does one go about linking the itin for the first time with credit history ?

Apply for a new card I believe. To be honest, I'm not sure how ITIN is reported as I heard it cannot replace SSN. However, at Equifax, it is showing in my account as SSN. This might depend on the bank. Kinda weird I have 11 cards now and only 5 are showing. None of Citi cards is showing. Chase and Cap1 cards are there but only 2 out 6 Amex cards are showing.

Ah that's very interesting that only some of your cards are being reported.
Are the ones not being reported the ones that you opened without an ITIN?

Nope. It's pretty random. Actually only 2 amex cards are not there because the other 2 are business cards. The one opened without ITIN is there as well. On the other hand, credit.com which uses Experian lists the correct number of my accounts, credit limit, balance etc

Nice, so you were also able to get your credit report/score outside of AmEx free FICO score, using your ITIN then?

In the past credit.com didn't need SSN/ITIN. Heard it has changed? Citi is showing Fico as well. Equifax is a bit weird for my case. I signed up for an account and got access briefly then they blocked my account. They wanted me to send documents. I did and never heard back. I just used a new email to sign up and same thing happened again and again lol I think my file is flagged. But yes you can get a report at equifax using ITIN. Heard some successful stories.

Why don't you use Wise to convert AUD to USD?

Is there any reason not to apply for an Amex Platinum when seeking to use the GT route? It gets the biggest sign up bonus then downgrade to a Gold or Green in year two to save on annual fee.
that is not a bad idea. my next card through GT will be the Green card need to wait another 5 months. But i would be keen on getting the Platinum then downgrade to Green. Does anyone know if this works or has any experience with it?

Has anyone requested a credit limit increase from AmEx?
I read that you should wait for at least 60 days before requesting an increase. I'm not trying to do that just yet but I see that I don't have any option to request a credit limit increase on my AmEx credit card. Is that because I opened it with my passport? Or it wont appear before 60 days of account opening?

Can’t recall as that was last year. But the option does come up eventually. Also, for some reason Amex increase my limits automatically without me accepting or choosing the option. Might be something to consider too.

Does anyone have any datapoints around how long it usually takes transactions and MR points to post on a Gold charge? Pending transactions are taking forever to post and points haven’t shown up yet even though previous transactions have cleared.

I Believe you need to make min payment for statement before points will credit . But you can check details under points summary .
