Straight swap from QF award flight to another?

Hey all,

Got a question.

So, I'm travelling to the USA in June, departing MEL and connecting at NAN, then flying through to LAX on Fiji Airways. At the time. This was the only reward booking I could find for required dates. Flight arrives into LAXat 1255PM, which is an absurd time, considering that I'm trying to head out east.

However, today , I saw a a reward flight for the day before I'm due to leave on QF/Fiji award flight.. That MEL-LAX flight arrives at 1830, and would allow plenty of time for tfr to a red eye to PHL,BOS,JFK etc. Would jump on a plane to buf the following morning.

Will I need to cancel my reward booking, wait 48-72 hours for points refund, then hopefully the MEL-LAX reward flight is still available?

Or is there an easier way to do it?
 
Yes, switching directly is possible, but it would require you to call up. Are both flights Fiji Airways?

No, one is qantas direct MEL-LAX and my current is mel-nan qf then nan-lax with Fiji Airways. Booking was made on the qantas website though, for the EXACT same amount of points. The only option at the time on the Qantas award booking page was for me to take the ex Fiji flight if I wanted a J fare.
The new flight departs the previous day.

That be the way to disaster.

Murphys law will require that you cancel the FJ sector, the QF sector then vanishes while you wait, and then so does the FJ sectors when you try to salvage your original plan.
 
if you call the contact centre during frequent flyer centre open hours, they can cancel the previous ticket, immediately refund points and then book your new ticket

The reservations call centre is open 24hrs.
The frequent flyer service centre cannot assist with changes, unless they are currently trained in reservations.

what I meant, is that if you call reservations call centre when the frequent flyer service center is open, they liaise with each other and points can be refunded immediately. that's what Hobart did for me when I called to cancel and rebook last week. points immediately refunded so we could rebook
 
FWIW I am flying a somewhat similar route (CBR/SYD/NAN/YVR) in June on FJ, and the change button is greyed out in MMB and says to call your Qantas office.
 
As others have pointed out, officially you can call up Qantas and request the change to be made. It will cost you 5000 points to do so which isn't much.
